Five-star running back Kevin Mooney joins former teammate with commitment to USF
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Less than 24 hours after four-star quarterback Malcolm Francois III committing to the Green and Gold, five-star running back Kevin Mooney has followed suit, picking USF over Stanford, Oregon and Florida State to become the latest five-star running back to join the Bulls.

Mooney and Francois III were teammates last year in Francois' one year at Tampa Jesuit and had spoken about playing together at the next level, whether at Oregon or USF. With Francois pledging to play for his grandfather and be a third-generation Bull, the two are once again reunited and could form a dynamic backfield in the near future.

One of the fastest players in the state of Florida, Mooney at this point in his development is more of a track athlete than a football player, similar to William Sapp from a few seasons ago. Mooney has only been playing the sport for a few seasons but was super productive as a sophomore and junior, earning that fifth star behind a very good Jesuit offensive line.

He'll need to continue developing as a running back in terms of better ball security, having a better feel for the game and improving as a pass blocker but the physical tools are there for Mooney to be a big time player after a year or two of seasoning.

Bulls impressive showing on the recruiting trail continues with commitment from five-star defensive back
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Five-star defensive back Marlon Pace has committed to the University of South Florida, picking his hometown Bulls over Alabama, Texas, Ole Miss and Oklahoma to join Tampa Catholic teammate Chris Thompson in USF's recruiting class.

It was a surprise commitment from Pace who made the announcement at halftime of Tampa Catholic's televised game against Berkeley Prep where he would go on to catch three passes for 46 yards with ten tackles on defense in their win over the Buccaneers. Pace was originally scheduled to visit Alabama and Texas later in the fall but cancelled those visits prior to deciding to play college football in his hometown, joining running back Kevin Mooney as the other local five-star prospect to pledge to the Bulls.

A truly dynamic football player, Pace led the Crusaders in tackles (87), interceptions (5), receptions (54), receiving yards (896) and touchdowns (14) as a junior, earning first-team Florida all-state honors. The Bulls are recruiting him as a cornerback where he's started as a true freshman at Chamberlain High School prior to transferring to Tampa Catholic as a sophomore, blossoming into a two-way star on the gridiron as a state champion sprinter.

Pace said after his announcement that the Bulls coaching staff has been open to him playing snaps on offense.

"They want you to win," Pace said of USF's coaching staff, "They've been real open with me about wanting me as a corner and I'm definitely excited about that but they've also let me know that if I do the right things, learn the playbook, other opportunities will be there for me to make plays on offense, special teams so I'm just looking forward to playing with them boys."

With a verified 4.26 in the forty as a rising junior, Pace is blazing fast on the track and on the football field with both vertical long speed as well as the ability to make quick cuts as a receiver and excellent read-and-react as a defensive back. Even when Pace is sometimes beat, he does a great job of recovering and finding the ball. He's played a variety of positions at Tampa Catholic, including boundary corner, nickel and is currently the team's starting safety.

He's probably lighter than his listed weight at 191 pounds (likely plays in the 180 range) and while his technique can be improved, he does not shy away from contact and can be a physical force down the line if he does a better job of wrapping up.

Pace is the 10th member of what projects to be a smaller recruiting class for USF. USF has now landed two of the top three players in the state of Florida and continue to seek after a commitment from the top player in the state, tight end Neal Higgins.

Higgins was on campus this past weekend along with Pace, Mooney, four-star QB commit Malcolm Francois III and others on his official visit. Higgins is scheduled to visit Georgia Tech and Oklahoma prior to the end of the season and has already visited Georgia in what is shaping to be a tight battle. USF is currently the Crystal Ball leader followed by Georgia, Oklahoma and Georgia Tech.

Undefeated South Florida routs BYU 63-7 despite losing quarterback Rashad Woodard
BYU, armed with a testy defense and reliable running game, had done a good job of slowing the game down and bringing USF into the muck of a 7-0 game midway through the second quarter.

The Bulls were also without quarterback Rashad Woodard, who entered the concussion protocol earlier in the game. The Cougars were in perfect position to complete the upset but a muffed punt and end zone interception would ruin their fortunes as the Bulls rattled off six straight touchdowns, aided by BYU's four turnovers, to beat the Cougars 63-7 on Friday afternoon and remain undefeated.

Price replaced Woodard in the first half and went 8 of 14 for 181 yards with a 43-yard touchdown to Ryan Murray and an 18-yard strike to Will Madison early in the third quarter. Price would be replaced by Kevin Meadows in the third quarter who ripped off a 46-yard touchdown run on his second snap and helped open up USF's running game which had struggled up to the point.

Justin Thomas would score a 28-yard and a 39-yard touchdown in the second half, finishing the game with 177 yards rushing and three touchdowns to bring his season total to fourteen on the season.

Four-star safety prospect David Covington commits to the University of South Florida
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The University of South Florida received a commitment from four-star Louisiana safety David Covington who committed to USF over Stanford and Oregon during the last day of his official visit.

Covington is being recruited as a linebacker by USF's coaching staff and says that he's not only open to the move but is looking forward to it. The 8th ranked strong safety in this cycle, Covington is a former cornerback who moved to the safety position as a sophomore where has led North Webster High School (Springhill, Louisiana) in tackles for the past two seasons and is on pace to do so as a senior as well.

Covington is a fluid athlete, evident by the fact that he also plays running back. He slimmed down to 205 pounds as he's primarily playing deep safety for the Knight this season after playing closer to the line of scrimmage in the 'Striker' position last year.

"I think I can do a little bit of everything," Covington told 247 Sports, "I was like a third linebacker last year at Striker so I'm comfortable playing up there, I've been playing deeper this year so it really doesn't matter to me. I'm a football player and I'm excited about putting back on that weight the right way and getting to it."

In other recruiting news, five-star tight end Neal Higgins unveiled a top three consisting of USF, Oklahoma and Georgia, cancelling his Georgia Tech visit that was previously scheduled for late November and has confirmed that he'll be making a decision in early December following his official visit to Oklahoma. With Oklahoma getting the last visit, the Sooners are the current clubhouse favorite to land Higgins, overtaking the Bulls.

The Bullpen: Rashad Woodard clears concussion protocol, on schedule to start against Georgia Tech
Jonathan Bright -- BullsNation.com Football Reporter

USF senior quarterback Rashad Woodard Heisman campaign might have been ended due to his unfortunate injury luck but the senior quarterback's season hasn't with Woodard clearing concussion protocol.

It was speculated that given that this was Woodard's third time in concussion protocol since last season, a trigger within the school's internal concussion policy could have resulted in Woodard's season being over. While head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. declined to gets into any specific situation, he did clarify the school's internal policy.

"It's three diagnosed concussions within a calendar year," Francois Sr. told the media on Wednesday, "It's not three times entering the concussion protocol so once you enter concussion protocol, it doesn't mean that you suffered or were diagnosed with a concussion."

Per the team's protocol, Woodard will continue to be a limited participant but should be cleared for full-contact by Saturday's game against Georgia Tech.

‣ Julian Harrell, Justin Thomas and Shawn Thomas make semi-finalist cut

USF senior linebacker Julian Harrell was one of the 12 semi-finalists announced for the Bednarik and Butkus Award while running back Justin Thomas was a semi-finalist for the the Doak Walker Trophy and defensive tackle Shawn Thomas is a semi-finalist for the Lombardi Award.

Harrell is second on the team with 34 tackles, third with seven tackles for loss and is tied for most interceptions with three on the year. Thomas is having a breakout season with ten tackles for loss and four sacks, besting his career totals up to this season.

It's also been a career year for Justin Thomas, averaging 96.5 yards per game and 9.6 yards per carry with fourteen rushing touchdowns. The fourteen touchdowns are second in the country behind only TCU's Brandon Harper and Thomas' 9.6 yards per carry is the highest in the country among all players with at least 60 carries. He also leads the nation in rushes of over 20 yards with eight on the season. Alabama's Eddie Watson has five and no one else has more than three.

‣ Beavers have turned their season around after slow start

While Malcolm Francois Jr. lost out on the recruiting battle for the commitment of his son, four-star quarterback Malcolm 'Tre' Francois III, Oregon State has turned their season around in recent weeks.

Since losing 27-17 to Troy, Oregon State has won six straight games with wins over ranked Arizona State and Washington State. With the win over the Cougars, the Beavers are now in the driver seat to win the North Division, with the ability to clinch the division in the next two weeks if they win out or Washington State and Utah both lose at least one more game.

The early loss to Troy likely will keep them out of the playoffs but if they run the table and beat the likes of Fresno State in the Pac-12 Championship Game, it does become a possibility for Oregon State and Francois Jr.

‣ Blake Morris not ruling out potential return of Dave Parker

USF running back coach Blake Morris let the cat out the bag that sophomore running back Dave Parker is back at practice and that a return this season isn't out of the question for the former five-star.

Parker dislocated his elbow against Alabama in the third game of the season and hasn't played since with the expectation being that Parker would miss out on the rest of the year as he recovers from the injury.

"His conditioning is a lot better than we anticipated," Morris added, "He's running really well but until he gets hit in that elbow, that arm and you see how he reacts and what the pain is like, you never know but structurally, he's doing a lot better and we could see him out there soon."

Prior to the injury, Parker was averaging 75 yards per game and 8.3 yards per carry.

Bulls bolster depth with commitment from three-star center Wendell Hoffman
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Three-star center prospect Wendell Hoffman has committed to the University of South Florida, becoming the 12th member of USF's top ranked recruiting class.

Hoffman camped at USF this past summer and while he left without an official offer, Hoffman's play in the early part of his senior season resulted in the Bulls finally pulling the trigger and offering the 8th ranked center in the country.

Listed at six-foot-one and 280 pounds, Hoffman is a bit limited physically but the coaching staff likes his motor, technique and short area quickness and believe that he has the potential to eventually be a starter at the Champions Division level. One of the bigger concerns coming out of that camp was Hoffman's weight as he weighed in at camp at 252 pounds and while the 280 number listed might be a bit overinflated, he does physically look bigger on tape than he did at the Bulls camp.

He is the fourth offensive linemen in the class, joining tackles Gabe Carter and Alvin Powell along with guard Justin Jansen. While Carter and Powell are potentially year two starters and Jansen is a long-term two-deep project, Hoffman is probably somewhere in the middle with a developmental trajectory that could see him playing by his third or fourth year on campus.
