Bulls overcome slow start to shutout Bulldogs in second half
USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. was so dissapointed in his team's performance in the first half after allowing the Georgia offense to go down the field in less than 21 seconds and score a touchdown before the end of the half that he made them stay on the sidelines during halftime.

Whatever was said worked as the USF defense didn't allow a single point in the second half while the Bulls offense scored 28 second half points, including 21 in the fourth quarter, to beat the Bulldogs 49-31 on Saturday.

It was a battle of two premier running backs with Georgia's Mike Hawkins rushing for 179 yards, outgaining Heisman winner Roger Shaw Jr. but Shaw was able to get into the endzone four different times, including a third-quarter touchdown that made it a three-point game with 1:55 left in the quarter.

USF would gain the lead on their next possession as Todd Woods tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Chance Fisher in the endzone on a play where both Fisher and Shaw were wide open. Woods finished the game 27 of 31 for 306 yards and four touchdowns, overcoming a second quarter pick-six as he tried throwing the ball away while getting taken down.

Bulls land another Tampa Tech commit in 4-star running back Gibson
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Four-star running back Jason Gibson, one of the top running back prospects in the country this cycle, has committed to the University of South Florida following his official visit along with Louisiana defensive end John Allen.

Gibson and Allen were among a group of talented prospects that were on campus this past weekend which also included four-star center Brandon Franklin and three-star offensive guard Dave Riley.

An uber productive runner for the Titans, Gibson is approaching the 4,000-yard mark on the ground despite not having many elite traits. USF signed two running backs last cycle in a borderline five-star in Danny Felder and an athletic freak in William Jones. With the commitment and eventual signing of Gibson, USF is going to be in good standing to have a succession plan following the graduation of Anthony Montgomery and the potential early departure of Heisman winner Roger Shaw Jr.

Such is a need at defensive line as well with two potential early departures in edge players Aaron Spurlock and Adam Hughes, both former five-stars with three sacks each to their names already in their junior campaign. If their level of play continues, the NFL could come calling, leaving the door wide open for Allen to be a potential early contributor at defensive end.

There is also the possibility that Allen, who is a bit undersized length wise at six-foot-one, kicks inside similar to Michael Guillory last cycle and plays defensive tackle at the next level. USF has two seniors starting this season in Dwayne Callahan and Kevin Simon with not a lot of depth nor experience beyond them.

While only Gibson and Allen committed following their visit, the Bulls are in good standing with Franklin and Riley, both of which had very glowing things to say about USF. Riley has stated in the past intentions to visit Ole Miss and West Virginia while a Miami, Navy and Texas A&M visit is in the works for Franklin. An elite prospect, USF will need to battle for Franklin but the Bulls coaching staff feel confident they can land the nation's second ranked center.

It's another weekend of visits for the Bulls with Gibson's teammate and quarterback Jesse King expected to take his official visit this weekend along with another Louisiana prospect in offensive tackle James Cochran. It seems that reading from the tea leaves, USF is moving in a different direction from King and this OV could be a courtesy one from both sides given that King is a local prospect.

Two new names USF fans should start getting familiar and watch their tape is IMG Academy teammates Marques Iosefo and Joe Jackson III. Iosefo, originally from Hawaii, is playing out his senior season at IMG along with current Bulls target QB Jeff Jones.

With USF pulling away from Clemson in the race for Jones, there has been mutual interest from both USF and Iosefo to try to bring him to Tampa as well. Prior to the move to IMG, Alabama was viewed as the favorite with Minnesota and Nebraska also in the mix as well as Arkansas before the firing of Rhett Lashlee.

The Bulls are also making a strong for push for Jackson, a talented corner that has risen quickly in the rankings since arriving at IMG as a sophomore from Nebraska. He had up and downs his first season as a member of the varsity team but since making the national team as a junior, Jackson has transformed into the second ranked corner this cycle with Texas A&M and Texas being seen as the teams to beat. With USF's run at corners and on defense in general, the Bulls throwing their hat in the ring shouldn't be taken lightly by either Texas school.

Woods bounces back from 3 INTs, pick six to have career day against Wildcats
As Bobby McBride crossed the endzone to give Kentucky the lead in the third quarter, the stars were seemingly aligned for an upset. The Wildcats had been thoroughly outplayed but were up by four points and were winning the turnover battle three to zero. They had done their best to stifle the Bulls running game and kept Heisman winner Roger Shaw Jr. out of the endzone and flustered senior quarterback Todd Woods, at home.

Woods would finish the game with 404 yards passing, three touchdowns while Shaw found the endzone twice in the second half as USF beat the Wildcats 52-29 on Saturday afternoon.

"I just try to move on," said Woods of his early interceptions, "I try not to worry about them, think about it and just try to make plays to help us win."

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. was rather forgiving of the three interceptions from his senior quarterback which had them trailing in the third quarter against an unranked Kentucky team with a losing record.

"The first was just a throw losing some steam down the field and the second, he got tricked. The third was really one where we can't have that but outside of three, maybe five plays, I thought he played pretty well."

Woods lost one of his top receivers Brent Cunningham to an injury early in the game. Replacing Cunningham was Bryan Mangum, who had a career day with two touchdown catches.

North Carolina's Franklin commits to Bulls over Miami, Texas A&M and Navy
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USFs offensive line has paved the way for last year's Heisman winner Roger Shaw Jr. and this year's top ranked total offense. They're continuing to recruit at a high level along the offensive line, landing a commitment from four-star center Brandon Franklin and three-star offensive tackle James Cochran.

Franklin, the second-ranked center in this class, is a bit undersized at six-foot and 287 pounds with not much room on his frame to add more weight. While this might be an issue for some, the Bulls coaching staff are confident that Franklin's athleticism and strength should translate to the next level. A move to guard is also in the cards for Franklin who has some mean streak to him when you watch his tape.

The North Carolina product also held offers from Miami, Texas A&M and Navy among others and was expected to official visit those schools. During his commitment, Franklin confirmed that he won't be visiting those schools.

USF also went out of state for Cochran out of Louisiana who was also targeted by Texas A&M and Navy. Cochran is more of a project than Franklin but has all the physical tools at six-foot-five and 295 pounds but his footwork and technique has a long ways to go, which could see him kick inside at the next level.

In other news, USF's visitor list for their next home game against top ranked Notre Dame continues to get more and more impressive. Confirmed recruits that will be on campus this weekend so far includes five-star receivers Buck Duckett and Kevin Morris, four-star quarterback Jeff Jones, four-star defensive tackles Matt Bush and Dallas Thomas and four-star defensive ends Ron Cox and T.J. Meeks.

USF WR Brent Cunningham to miss Alabama game; eyeing return against Notre Dame
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

USF's season will be defined by their performance in their next two games against Alabama and Notre Dame, two teams that have spent time this season as No.1 in the AP and Coaches Poll.

They won't have one of their top receivers for at least one of them as Brent Cunningham suffered a shoulder injury in the team's win against Kentucky last Saturday and is expected to miss the Alabama game.

Cunningham has bounced back from his sophomore slump where he caught just 17 passes for 247 yards the entire season after catching 34 passes for 463 yards as a true freshman. Cunningham is off to the best start of his career, already passing his receptions and yardage total from 2031 while averaging 54.2 yards per game.

Junior college transfer Bryan Mangum replaced Cunningham last week and caught two touchdown passes. On the season, Mangum has twelve catches for 143 yards and three touchdowns.
