Tampa Jesuit's Kevin Mooney recaps Stanford visit, talks possible reunion with Malcolm Francois III
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Five-star running back Kevin Mooney spent this past weekend in Palo Alto on his official visit to Stanford as he watched his hometown South Florida Bulls beat the Cardinal 37-26 to remain undefeated.

"It was definitely good to get out there," Mooney told 247 Sports prior to his flight back to Tampa, "It was my first time in California so definitely grateful for that opportunity and got to watch a great game between two teams that I could definitely see myself playing for."

It was the first of four visits that Mooney plans on taking this fall with USF being his next stop in a few weeks followed by Oregon and Florida State in November. Mooney shared that his former teammate at Tampa Jesuit and four-star quarterback Malcolm Francois III will be with him on his visit to Oregon and the two have spoken about playing together again.

"We complete each other's game very well," Mooney added, "He's a dynamic quarterback that can keep ball on those option plays so he definitely opens it up for others to be able to make plays."

Another USF target in four-star offensive tackle Gabe Carter was in attendance as Carter completed his official visit with Stanford. Carter is the third ranked offensive tackle in the country and the IMG prospect is USF's top offensive line target and a major priority for the Bulls. He'll be making his official visit during the Nebraska weekend as well.

The Bullpen: How concerned should USF fans be about lack of passing game?
Jonathan Bright -- BullsNation.com Football Reporter

Through the first four games of the season, USF's passing offense is ranked 82nd in the country with 180.3 passing yards per game, fresh off a 99-yard performance from Rashad Woodard through the air against Stanford.

Outside of the Georgia game, USF hasn't had a lot of success in the passing game this season and while it's only been four games, it is a concerning trend as the Bulls get ready to play a Texas team in two weeks whose offense can keep up with the Bulls and whose battered defense still has athletes that could continue to make life difficult for USF's passing offense.

While the team does have two long touchdowns to Joshua Butler against USC and Donald Jones against Alabama, Rashad Woodard and the Bulls offense has had a hard time challenging defenses vertically on a consistent basis.

Slot receiver Ryan Murray has been the most consistent receiver with twelve receptions but similar to their other receiving targets, the Bulls have been unable to keep Murray and others involved in the game which needs to change if they hope to remain undefeated and more importantly, make a run in the playoffs.

‣ Justin Thomas could potentially miss just one game thanks to bye schedule

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. didn't have his usual Wednesday press availability as the team is on a bye week -- their second of three bye weeks in five weeks -- but he did confirm on Monday's conference call that running back Justin Thomas has a broken thumb.

"It's really about pain management and whether or not he's able to hang on to the football comfortably," Francois Sr. added, "If we had a game this week, he probably wouldn't be playing and we'll see about next week."

With the team having a bye after the Texas game, Thomas should be available for the team's next game when they play Nebraska. They are already without running back Dave Parker who is sidelined with a dislocated elbow. Thomas is averaging 67.5 yards per game this season and a team leading 8.7 yards per carry.

Francois Sr. also confirmed that defensive end James Foster broke 'multiple ribs' in the team's win over Stanford and will be out for a few weeks. Foster has two tackles on the season and a tackle for loss as a reserve defensive end.

‣ Left tackle Kevin Brown is on thin ice

USF offensive line coach Ryan Williams has been pretty open with the media since his arrival to USF a few years ago and that proved to be the case on Monday when he publicly called out left tackle Kevin Brown for his poor play.

"[Brown] knows he's been pretty bad this season," Williams told the media, "He's struggling, he knows it and he acknowledges it and he knows it needs to get better. It has to because at this point, it's impacting our offense and what we're able to call. He's a good kid and a hard worker so I have no doubt in my mind that he's not open to this criticism but he's accepting of the challenge to get better and that if he doesn't, he'll be next to me on the sidelines."

The second-year player has already surrendered four sacks on the season after allowing just six all of last year as a true freshman.

Williams stated that during the upcoming bye week, he will explore other options but still believes that Brown is the answer at left tackle, for now.

"He's our best player at that position until he's not," Williams continued, "We have a pretty honest [offensive line room] and a group of guys that understand that it's all about getting the best five guys out there for the job."

Other options at left tackle include true freshman Tim Hill or perhaps playing left guard Brian Jackson at left tackle -- where he took some snaps in the fall -- and promoting either Mike Miller, Tim Richardson or Josh Henry into that left guard spot.

Bulls look to restock defensive tackle room with commitment from four-star Marcus Jones
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

After signing a blue-chip defensive tackle last cycle in Dan James, the University of South Florida went in-state this time around to land a commitment from Eustis, Florida native Marcus Jones as the top 170 prospect committed to the Bulls over Alabama, Stanford and Georgia Tech.

The four-star prospect is a bit of a tweener at six-foot-three and 257 pounds and while he primarily plays strongside defensive end in high school, he projects to be a interior player at the next level.

He's not the twitchiest of players which is why a move inside will ultimately be necessary but he's got a decent set of pass rushing moves and his bread-and-butter is his ability to set the edge and be stout against the run. He could play anywhere from two-technique in sub package to a five-technique in USF's base 3-4 scheme, providing some versatility which USF values especially in its front seven.

This weekend also saw the commitment from three-star cornerback Adam Anderson to Virginia Tech who was at the Green and Gold Bash earlier this summer. Anderson worked out for the Bulls during that visit and it seemed that the coaching staff might have cooled their interest in the five-foot-eleven corner. Three-star linebacker Jermaine Copeland, who was also at that same recruiting event, also recently released a top four which didn't include USF as both parties seemed to have parted ways since his workout as well.

Bulls QB Rashad Woodard injured in 52-7 whooping of the Longhorns
USF freshman running back Brian Clay grew up two hours from Austin, Texas and blossomed into a four-star prospect at Alvin High School where many top football programs would seek his commitment, just not the University of Texas.

Clay would sign with USF and in his first extended opportunity with the Bulls down to just two healthy running backs, Clay scored three touchdowns in the Bulls 52-7 rout of Texas on Saturday afternoon.

Clay scored the first two touchdowns of the game to help USF jump out to an early 14-0 lead and when the Longhorns finally responded with a touchdown of their own, the Bulls offense would rattle off 38 unanswered points, including seventeen alone in the second quarter.

USF did it without starting quarterback Rashad Woodard for most of the game who left with a hip injury in the second quarter and did not return. Chris Price finished the rest of the half, leading the Bulls to two more scoring drives before Kevin Meadows came in in the second half and went 8 of 11 for 88 yards while rushing for 108 yards with two total touchdowns.

After the game, USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. described Woodard as being 'banged up' and that the decision to go with Meadows in the second half over Price was due to Meadows' running ability.

"We were up a decent amount by that point," Francois Sr. said of the decision, "We're probably looking at a run heavy second half and having the better runner in that game made more sense."

Ryan Williams' impressive run continues with commitment from IMG's Gabe Carter
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF offensive line coach Ryan Williams inherited a USF offensive line that was void of elite talent at the top and quality depth. While USF's offensive line has struggled at times this season, particularly in pass protection, Williams has raised the level of talent at USF during his tenure and continues to do so with the commitment from offensive tackle Gabe Carter.

Per 247 Sports, Carter is the third ranked offensive tackle in the nation and could potentially play right away as a true freshman. At six-foot-six and 330 pounds, Carter has enough girth to potentially play inside at the next level and good enough feet to play either left or right tackle. The one aspect of his game that could use his improvement is his motor which should improve as Carter transforms his body and loses some of the bad weight that he's currently carrying.

The commitment from Carter is USF's fifth this cycle and currently has them ranked 7th in the country.

The Bullpen: Four years in the making, Shawn Thomas finally has his breakout game
Jonathan Bright -- BullsNation.com Football Reporter

The highest ranked defensive tackle to ever sign with USF, Shawn Thomas had all the making of a future college football star but through his first three seasons at USF, the North Carolina native failed to make much of an impact.

Against Texas on Saturday, the senior was unblockable, recording a career high eight tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks to help shut down Texas' offense. Coming into that game, Thomas in his career had recorded just nine tackles, six tackles for loss and two sacks so needless to say, it was a career day for a player that has always been oozing with talent.

Unfortunately for Thomas, he'll need to wait a week before he can get back on the field as USF is on their final bye week of the season.

‣ Justin Thomas, James Foster and Rashad Woodard all expected to practice this week

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. told the media that the only player currently sidelined with an injury is running back Dave Parker as he continues to recover from surgery on his dislocated elbow.

Running back Justin Thomas was a full participant in Tuesday's full-pad practice and defensive end James Foster was a limited participant as was quarterback Rashad Woodard as they recover from their respective injury.

Woodard re-aggravated a hip injury from earlier in the season according to Francois Sr's comments after the Texas game who described the injury as being 'banged up' rather than any structural damage.

‣ With Chris Fenton's commitment to Oregon, appears to be a father/grandfather race for Malcolm Francois III

Four-star quarterback Chris Fenton shocked the recruiting world with his surprise commitment to Oregon after it was widely perceived as a two-team race between Stanford and Fresno State.

Fenton's decision impacts USF because it's now a two-team race for quarterback target Malcolm Francois III who will likely be deciding between Oregon State -- where his father is currently the head coach -- or USF where his grandfather is the head coach and where his father, grandfather and two uncles all played college football.

Francois III has not done any interviews throughout his recruitment but from reading the tea leaves from the fall out of Fenton's commitment, it seems that Oregon's coaching staff wasn't confident that they'd be able to pry Francois III away from either Oregon State or USF and went with the similar prospect in Fenton who is ranked 24 spots blow Francois in the 247 Composite Ranking and is the 15th ranked quarterback this cycle while Francois III is the 12th ranked prospect.
