For Mackey Award winning TE Chris Wallace, the No. 1 jersey is everything right about about USF's culture
ESPN College Football Gameday Special

The first football game USF tight end Chris Wallace remembers was the 2026 Orange Bowl in Wallace's backyard. He was eleven years old and despite living just a few miles from Hard Rock Stadium, he had never attended a football game.

"My dad's friend had this parking hustle going on," Wallace recalls his dad bringing him along, stuffing cars into the family's friend's tiny driveway.

Once the driveway was full, they headed inside and watched the game. As Dallas Gross terrorized the Georgia Tech offense with fifteen tackles and four tackles for loss, wearing the coveted No. 1 jersey, Wallace made up his mind right there and then.

"I didn't even think about the NFL back then," Wallace smiles, "To me, when people asked me what I wanted to do, I never said the NFL or anything like that. It was playing for the Bulls, wearing that No. 1 jersey."

The NFL is now thinking about Wallace after the Plantation, Florida native caught 164 passes in his first two seasons despite being labeled an undersized tight end at six-foot-one and 224 pounds and too slow to be a receiver. He averaged 14.7 yards per reception last season and 386 of his yards came after the catch, proving the talent evaluators that still rated him a five-star recruit despite his stature correct.

For Wallace, however, the NFL can wait for their turn. He's living out his dream having been honored with the No. 1 jersey, a number that's earned, not chosen or bestowed upon. It started with receiver Zac White, who was one of the players that turned USF's football program around.

White, a five-star recruit at the time, chose the Bulls over N.C. State and UCF. A charismatic player on and off the court, it was only fitting that he chose to wear the No. 1 jersey upon his arrival in Tampa.

"There was going to be a lot of pressure on me anyway," says White, who led USF to a national championship appearance and an invite into the Big XII, "I wanted the pressure, I enjoyed it. That's what the No. 1 jersey is about. Embracing that pressure, wanting the ball, wanting the burden of making plays when it counts the most."

After White's departure into the NFL in 2018, it was given to quarterback David Johnson by White. Since then, USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. meets with coaches and all former players that have worn the number to decide on who will wear it next. Here is it's history:

Bulls shutout Aggies in second half after early struggles to win 37-16
Joey Spence was running towards the 50-yard line, pumping his arms up to get the quiet and now nervous USF crowd back into it.

The second-year quarterback had just rushed for a first down, the team's first of the game after they had dug themselves a 13-0 hole with less than five minutes left in the first half.

Spence would throw a touchdown pass to Chris Wallace to end that drive and throw two more to Wallace before the end of the third quarter to take the lead and never let go as USF rallied from an early deficit to beat the Texas A&M 37-16.

Spence finished the game with 358 yards and five touchdowns, his last touchdown being perhaps his best as Jason McDowell got behind the defense and so did Spence's ball that he placed right in his bread basket as he fell into the endzone. It was one of two catches that the roommates connected on, the other being a leaping 34-yard connection with eight seconds left in the half to set up Wallace's second touchdown of the second quarter to cut into Texas A&M's lead with three seconds to go before the end of the half.

The Aggies offense didn't get much of anything going in the second half and even in the first half, it was more show than substance as despite three trips into the Bulls red zone, including a gifted one from a Dionte McCarthy fumble on the second drive of the game, the Aggies only scored nine points. The lone touchdown came on the first drive of the game when Reggie Williams beat the Bulls Cover 2 defense for an easy touchdown.

USF WR Bennett stars in Bulls' 42-7 win over LSU Tigers
LSU senior cornerback Chuck Jennings might be the best corner in the country and he spent the first half being avoided by USF's offense.

In the second half, however, the Bulls went right after the All-SEC corner with true freshman Maurice Bennett catching not one but two touchdowns in the second half against Jennings as USF put the finishing touches on their 42-7 blowout of the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the rain, Bennett caught ten passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Jennings got a bit of revenge in the fourth quarter with an interception but the game was already out of hand by then.

The Bulls softened the Tigers up with two first-half touchdowns by Bobby Jackson the ground, including a 70-yarder in the 2nd quarter that gave them the 21-0 lead. It was all jump started by Kenny Fowler's pick six of Devon Wright, who would go on to complete just 47 percent of his passes.

With LSU's defense forced to come up to defend the run, Joey Spence sliced them up to the tune of 333 yards passing and three touchdowns on 63 percent completion. His only two mistakes were a goal-line interception where he overthrew tight end Antoine Frank and a jump ball to Jason McDowell that Jennings intercepted. He put up those impressive numbers in his third career start without his best receiver in tight end Chris Wallace who was a gameday scratch from the lineup.
