Richardson's breakout season ended due to broken tailbone; to evaluate options at the end of the regular season
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

University of South Florida junior linebacker Shelton Richardson will miss the rest of the season with a broken tailbone he suffered in the team's win over West Virginia.

Richardson, a third-year starter, had career numbers with 73 tackles and 22 tackles for loss this season along with an interception and three forced fumbles. He was recently named a finalist for the Bednarick Trophy, the Nagurski and the Butkus Trophy.

The junior linebacker said on an Instagram post that he's "looking forward to getting healthy and deciding what's best for my family". While Richardson is a draft eligible player, questions about his size could hurt his draft prospects. He's listed at six-foot-one and 225 pounds, excelling in the team's 4-3 scheme which favors speed over power. Despite this, he was able to have success as an edge player in his first two seasons, recording 5.5 and 4 sacks in his first two seasons as an edge rusher.

Replacing Richardson will most likely be redshirt junior linebacker Matt Thompson. In three seasons, Thompson has five career tackles and has mainly played special teams. At six-foot-six and 230 pounds, he brings more size to the position but isn't as athletically gifted as Richardson.

Not a guy you want to lose, that's a tough one for sure. Going to be an interesting finish to the season.

Even with lowering the injury ratings, not many happening. Just three this season to players that missed games while the rest are typically a quarter here or there. might decrease the injury rating by +10 for each position next season.

Recruiting Class in Review: The class before 'The Class', a look back at USF's 2015 recruiting class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The 2014 recruiting class was USF's first recruiting class under head coach Malcolm Francois and the 2016 recruiting class featured arguably some of the best players to ever grace the bull horn on their helmets. Sandwiched between that class is a 2015 class that came in with a lot of hype and was quickly forgotten about it among the masses once the 2016 class started coming together.

With everyone in that class heading into either their senior or redshirt junior season, let's revisit that class and grade it out.

2015 USF Bulls Recruiting Class
QB Steven McKenzie [QB #6]: 6'1", 209lbs | Trenton, NJ | 4-star
Career Stats :: 16 of 23, 138 yards, interception, 10 carries, 35 yards, 0 career starts.
Analysis :: McKenzie came in with a lot of hype following Grant Oliver struggling in practices as a true freshman. Once McKenzie got on campus, it seemed poise for him to eventually dethrone Oliver as the next in line. Oliver would go on to re-write the record books while McKenzie is a career backup stuck behind yet another talented quarterback in David Johnson.

TE Buck Burns [TE #9]: 6'1", 236lbs | Peachtree City, GA | 4-star
Career Stats :: 129 receptions, 1135 yards, 6 touchdowns.
Analysis :: You can't ask more from a four-star signee to be a four-year contributor, a three-year starter and a senior as a captain having career numbers with career highs in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns with two more games left on the season. Burns never turned into the dynamic tight end that some hoped but he was a quality signing for sure.

CB Brett Johnson [CB #13]: 6'0", 185lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star
Career Stats :: 50 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 5 pass breakups.
Analysis :: It took him a while but once Johnson got going in his junior season as a starter, he hasn't looked back. He's been one of the Bulls top defenders for the past two seasons and despite not playing his first two years, it's tough to call Johnson a disappointment.

P Brian Bradshaw [P #4]: 5'10", 210lbs | Pine Hills, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 133 punts, 34.2 Net Yd Average, 33 punts inside the 20
Analysis :: The most you can ask from your punter is that he's not a liability and for four-years, Bradshaw wasn't. He never was able to recreate his 2016 season with 16 punts inside the 20 but the offense also got better around that time and didn't need much from him.

K Matt Perkins [K #17]: 6'1", 160lbs | Belle Glade, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 67 of 75, 100% XP, 54 Fg Lng
Analysis :: Similar to Bradshaw, Perkins was a consistent specialist with a few all-conference selections to his name and a reliable kicker.

T Darren Charles [T #19]: 6'8", 302lbs | Tampa, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 39 pancakes, 23 sacks allowed.
Analysis :: Charles has started every game for the Bulls since Francois was able to apply the full court pressure on the Tampa product and get him to sign on National Signing Day. Charles is a rare breed, having started at left tackle for four years.

G Derrick Drew [G #19]: 6'2", 303lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 24 pancakes, 12 sacks allowed.
Analysis :: Depth allowed Drew to be able to redshirt as a freshman unlike Charles but like Charles, since Drew took over the starting spot as a redshirt freshman, he hasn't let it go since and is having an All-American like season as a junior. The draft might call his name this spring so interested to see how it plays out.

G Maurice Bell [G #40]: 6'4", 264lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 44 pancakes, 11 sacks allowed.
Analysis :: An undersized guard that got switched to center and similar to Charles, started every game of his college career. Bell never was able to put on the weight but he was able to be a very productive college player and we'll see how his NFL draft evaluation goes due to his lack of size.

CB Brandon Simmons [CB #40]: 5'10", 178lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 51 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 6 interceptions, 13 pass breakups.
Analysis :: Simmons came into the class with less hype than fellow corner Brett Johnson but their careers went about the same with Simmons getting slightly more playing time as a sophomore. Similar to Johnson, Simmons got the nod as a junior to be a starter at corner and has excelled since.

DE Bryan Walker [DE #73]: 6'4", 255lbs | Pompano Beach, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 1 tackle, 1 tackle for loss.
Analysis :: Walker never was able to get much consistent playing time and his lack of athleticism doesn't bode well for an uber athletic defense that emphasizes on speed at the edge. He's slated to be a starter next season and could have a Gary Prince-like career revival after four disappointing seasons.

QB Mario Greer [QB #38]: 6'1", 193lbs | Winter Park, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: No stats.
Analysis :: It's hard to expect much from Greer when you consider that he came in the same class with a higher ranked quarterback. Greer battled for the starting job twice with Oliver and McKenzie and this past season with McKenzie and Johnson and both times, he finished well in third place.

T Isaac Gutierrez [T #88]: 6'3", 324lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 8 pancakes, 4 sacks given up.
Analysis :: After a string of non-productive players, enter Gutierrez who rode the bench for four years -- redshirting one -- and is now a starter at right tackle. Gutierrez has been a solid, not great, addition to the lineup and figures to start next year as well.

WR Alex Strong [WR #165]: 6'1", 223lbs | Miami Springs, FL | 3-star
Career Stats :: 29 carries, 94 yards, touchdown, 11 receptions, 58 yards.
Analysis :: Strong signed at the wrong time, just when USF's level of recruitment at both wide receiver and running back -- where he eventually switched to -- rose very quickly. He never got it going and an injury his senior season derailed any chance of a late career revival.

C Kenny Brantley [C #46]: 6'2", 289lbs | Largo, FL | 2-star
Career Stats :: No stats.
Analysis :: Signed in the same class as a four-year starter in Bell, Brantley has been a backup since and figures to start next season as a redshirt senior.

G Zac Thomas [G #109]: 6'2", 293lbs | Miami, FL | 2-star JUCO
Career Stats :: 2 pancakes, 1 sack given up.
Analysis :: Similar to Brandley, Thomas got stuck behind Derrick Drew and never got close to starting since. With Victor Tucker's injury, Drew has started the last two games and held his own.

T Michael Lee [T #158]: 6'4", 304lbs | North Fort Myers, FL | 1-star JUCO
Career Stats :: No stats.
Analysis :: Career backup.

FB Robert Holland [FB #34]: 6'1", 240lbs | Pensacola, FL | 1-star
Career Stats :: 21 receptions, 142 yards.
Analysis :: A versatile player whose role is only going to get bigger as a senior when Buck Burns graduates. A position switch to tight end is not out of the picture of Holland.

Superlative Awards
Most Important Signing: It's hard to not go with Burns as he started the pipeline of Georgia to the Bulls. They did sign QB Grant Oliver out of Georgia but at the time, Oliver was more fan hype than national hype. Signing a legit SEC caliber prospect in Burns definitely helped opened the flood gates for that 2016 recruiting class.

Most Productive Signing: This is a three-man award given to the combination of Darren Charles, Derrick Drew and Maurice Bell. They manned that left side of the offensive line and paved the way for some prolific offenses.

Biggest Bust of the Class: When the top ranked player in a class has less or just as many starts as anyone in the class, it's hard to not go with McKenzie.

Most Untapped Potential: To avoid going with McKenzie back to back, Alex Strong is an interesting one. He was really good in 2017, averaging 6.1 yards per carry and could have really given this offense another facet as a scat back in 2018 but he never could get on the field and/or stay healthy. In a different offense, Strong might have been able to be that versatile running back capable of rushing for 500 yards and catching 50 passes.

Biggest Steal of the Class: Flipping Darren Charles from his Florida State commitment was a major get for the Bulls. Who would have even started at left tackle for the Bulls these past four years? Certainly no one has good as Charles.

Biggest Lost of the Class: While his production elsewhere was never great, it's hard to deny the talent of current FIU quarterback Nathan Sykes. USF was in on Sykes before he committed to Miami where he played for one season there, transferred to FIU and redshirted in 2016, played some in 2017 as a backup and then spent 2018 dealing with a dislocated elbow. Landing Sykes, a four-star local quarterback, would have lit the town on fire and made the 2016 class that much more anticipated.
