Big recruiting weekend on deck as six USF targets head down to Tampa
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF will be hosting six of their top targets this weekend including five-star quarterback Charlie Cooke, five-star linebacker Dominic Walker, five-star guard Trumaine Williams, five-star running back Eric Valentine, and four star cornerback Julius Hughes.

The headliner is Cooke, the Alabama quarterback that has visits scheduled to Alabama, Troy, UCF and Florida State but its widely considered a two-team race between the Tide and the Bulls. While Alabama is the hometown team, USF does have a rather interesting connection with both Alabama products Cooke and Hughes as well as five-star running back Eric Valentine.

All three played the past two summers for Super Gremlins, a Tampa-based 7v7 program that is ran by none other than former USF tight end J.J. Francois who is the son of head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. The Gremlins launched two years ago with Cooke, Hughes and Valentine all being members of the initial roster that also featured current USF receiver and former five-star recruit Maurice Bennett.

Even with the connection, it's going to be tough to pull Cooke away from Alabama where he has a chance to be a potential day one starter. USF is in much better standing with both Valentine and Hughes with Valentine's commitment potentially coming down this weekend. Valentine unofficially visited USF four times this past summer and has yet to schedule an official visit with any other program. Oklahoma and Michigan were considered part of his recruitment earlier on in the process.

USF is battling Auburn for Hughes' commitment, who is the second ranked corner in the class. The Alabama native is the younger brother of former USF linebacker/edge rusher Adam Hughes who signed with the Bulls over Alabama and Auburn back in 2030. If he commits to the Bulls, he would be the third 'legacy' recruit of this cycle, joining William Sapp and Joey Bailey whose fathers played for USF.

Editor's Note: Updating some house rules that I tested out during the Penn State game.

Dynasty Gameplay Restrictions
- No switching players on offense or defense after the snap with exception being on offense during designed jump ball situations (ie goal-line fade).
- No unusual moving of defensive players pre-snap (ie moving a player with deep third responsibility close to the LOS)
- Must use coordinator's playbook. If coordinator is fictional, must use generic or custom playbook.
- No audibling with first year starter at QB for offense and MLB/S on defense. No hot routes allowed on offense or defense. Defense allowed to shift to adjust to offense formation or game situation.
- No audibling on the road.
- Audibling is limited to quick audibles (ie: run play, quick pass, man coverage) only under the following circumstances:
- Defense is overloaded to one side. QB is allowed to flip the run play or audible to another play using quick audibles.
- Defense is playing press coverage on a WR screen/bubble play. QB is allowed to audible to a run or another pass.
- Defense is showing blitz on a run headed towards the player(s) showing blitz. QB is allowed to a pass play.
- Defense is playing single high safety on a called run play. QB is allowed to audible to a pass.
- Offense is lining up in an empty set on a play where a blitz is called. Defense is allowed to audible out of the blitz.
- Offense is lining up in the wildcat formation. Defense is allowed to audible to a blitz.
- Offense has overloaded one side of the football. Defense is allowed to audible to man coverage in order to match leverage.
- First-year starters at QB are not allowed to utilize the pre-snap coach snap (reveals play being run). Multi-year starters at QB are allowed to use it once per play at home and cannot be used on the road.
- Can only apply head coach skills points towards recruiting.
- Coordinator boosts must not be used during the season. After the final game of the season, boosts will be applied in order to maximize head coaching opportunities for coordinators.
- Cannot run same play more than twice in a single offensive drive.
- Cannot run any read option play more than twice in a single offensive drive and option play cannot be called once past the opponent's 35-yard line or on 3rd or 4th down.
- No huddle can only be used on offense within reason (game situation, stamina of players, personnel grouping, etc..) and outside of two-minute drill, can only be ran with multi-year starter at QB.
- Defense can only run base-plays when offense in no huddle and cannot change formations.
- Must mix up the snap cadence on offense in order to simulate real-game scenarios and be susceptible to false start penalties.
- Cannot use directional aim (left stick) when kicking. Must use kicking meter (right stick) as method to direct the kick.
- For road games at stadiums that have a home field advantage grade higher than A, play selection is limited to the first page of recommended plays. No huddling on offense outside of two-minute drill is not permitted. No blitzing permitted on defense during no-huddle situations and no pre-snap adjustments (ie pinching defensive line, pressing coverage, etc.)
- For road games at stadiums that have a home field advantage grade in the Bs, play selection is limited to the first two pages of recommended plays. For no huddle situations, it's limited to base/concept plays (ie Stick, Curl Flats, Dive, Toss, Cover 2, Cover 3, Man).
- For road games at stadiums that have a home field advantage grade lower than C, play selection is limited to the first three pages of recommended plays.
- For home games, play selection is limited to any of the recommended plays.

Stanford's Lee misses game winner as Pleasant keeps USF atop
There was a nervous energy in Raymond James Stadium as the Stanford Cardinal, with their backup quarterback, not only wouldn't go away but would return every single blow that USF's physical defense would deliver.

In the end, USF's defense was able to make the necessary stops and set up Mike Pleasant's game winning, 36-yard field goal that kept USF's undefeated season alive in their 23-20 win over Stanford on Saturday night.

It was almost Jorge Lee's moment and before that Lance Anderson's as the backup quarterback completed a 3rd and 13 to give Stanford the ball on the 25-yard line. A false start penalty would set Stanford back five-yards where they would never recover, going backwards on three straight plays to set up the 52-yarder which he missed.

Earlier in the game, the sophomore kicker had made a 48-yard field goal, the second of back to back field goals in the second half to give Stanford the 13-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

USF was able to loosen Stanford's stifling defense thanks to Bobby Jackson's 44-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Cardinal had held the explosive Jackson to just eleven yards on his first ten carries of the game. He rushed for 66 yards in his final seven carries of the night.

It was the opposite for John Easley who dominated early in the game but as the game wear on, his twenty-six carries against USF's top ranked rush defense took its toll. He finished with 169 yards rushing but was largely a non-factor in the fourth quarter when it was winning time.

Bulls add three more blue chip prospects to class in five-star Valentine, four-stars Hughes and Smith
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The University of South Florida has landed commitments from five-star running back Eric Valentine, four star cornerback Julius Hughes and four-star defensive end Cory Smith.

Valentine and Hughes committed while on campus on an official visit along with five-star quarterback Charlie Cooke, five-star linebacker Dominic Walker and five-star guard Trumaine Williams.

Smith is the first line of scrimmage player of this class, picking the Bulls over UCF and hometown Miami that tried to make a late push. A bit short for an edge rusher, Smith projects to be a situational edge setter at the next level. He's limitations as an athlete could prevent him from being a full-time starter but he's a polished run defender that is best suited as a five-technique.

Joining Smith on defense is Hughes, the nation's second ranked corner who some view as a potential five-star caliber player if he had remained at IMG Academy. Hughes played his sophomore spring ball at IMG but never played in an official game for the Ascenders, returning to Alabama where he was an All-State selection all four seasons.

The brother of former USF linebacker Adam Hughes, Hughes is an elite athlete who should be an instant impact player in the slot. He'll need to continue adding weight and get better against the run but ultimately, his bread will be buttered by his play in pass coverage.

USF added a second running back in Eric Valentine, giving them two five-star running backs in the same class as he joined William Sapp. Valentine is the lesser athlete but a more natural running back who isn't afraid to get physical. A cross between current USF running back Jason Gibson and Derrick Green would be a good comparison for Valentine as he has a bit more juice than Gibson but not quite the athlete that Green was.

Valentine and Sapp are not only okay with each other being in the same class but view it as a plus. At the time of his commitment, Sapp welcomed the addition of another running back, whether it be Valentine or Sam Nicholson, another five-star back who has since removed USF from his top schools. Valentine tagged Sapp in his announcement via social media and told On3 Recruiting that he looks forward to playing with Sapp.

"You don't want to carry the ball 30, 35 times. I mean I could," Valentine told On3 Recruiting, "But when you can take a breather and give fifteen, twenty really hard good carries and have another person in there that's also giving the defense work, it makes your job easier, makes the whole team better."

While they weren't able to land a commitment, USF left the weekend feeling confident about where they stood with top ranked quarterback Charlie Cooke whose expected to visit Alabama in the coming weeks as well as Troy, UCF and Florida State.

The Bulls extended an offer out to Orlando area cornerback Vincent Pettway. The six-foot-two corner picked up an offer recently from USC and is being recruited by the likes of Rutgers and Illinois although so far, only the Bulls and Trojans have offered him. The 61st ranked corner in his class, Pettway is a rising prospect that is getting some buzz due to a stellar senior season.
