USF Jones leaves game with injury as defense leads Bulls to win over Miami
Throughout the season, USF's defense has taken a backseat to its record setting passing offense and quarterback Jeff Jones, who just today, broke the school record for most passing yards in a single season.

Jones would leave with an injury soon after and not return, leaving USF's offense in the gutter after already being down its starting running back. The defense took care of the rest, keeping the Miami Hurricanes out of the endzone en route to a 20-6 victory.

Miami rushed for 171 yards on the ground but were held to 126 yards passing, totaling just 297 yards of total offense and crossed the 50-yard line just twice, both times leading to field goals. Miami was forced to punt six times and offensively could never get any thing going.

USF didn't fare much better either after Thomas Jackson replaced Jones in the second quarter after Jones left with what was reported to be an aggravation of a previous back injury. Jackson completed just 46 percent of his passes before USF replaced him with redshirt junior Brandon Wilson.

Wilson led a touchdown drive and completed 8 of 13 passes for 115 yards to help steady the ship. USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. was confident after the game that Jones will be available for their regular season finale against rival UCF.

Source: Unsanctioned pain management injection led to Jones sitting out second half
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

USF true freshman quarterback broke the school record for most passing yards in a single season in his first drive against Miami before injuring himself two drives later rolling out of the pocket and had a defender fall on him as he went out of bounds. Jones gingerly got up before being helped to the sidelines and quickly went into the locker room where he stayed before reappearing in the second half wearing street clothes.

The school initially reported that it was a back injury that kept Jones out of the game as the offense struggled to beat Miami 20-6 but the Tampa Bay Chronicles has since learned from a source with direct knowledge of the situation that it was USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr.'s decision to keep Jones out of the game due to a breakdown of pain management protocols.

According to the source, USF's football program has an 'internal, unwritten' policy that student athletes are only allowed to be administered one dosage of pain management medication, whether pills or injections over a certain period of time. The source indicated that leading up to the game, Jones had been given pain medication for his back which are in line with other reports that the injury Jones suffered against Miami was a reaggravation of a previous injury.

The source claims that Jones had been given an injection in his back for the injury which wasn't disclosed to the coaching staff, including Francois Sr. When Jones went into the locker room in hopes of receiving a second injection, it was at this time that members of the staff and medical team were made aware of the previous injection and contacted Francois Sr. who made the decision at halftime to shut Jones down.

Francois Sr. and USF have declined to comment on this report.

Recruiting Class in Review: USF lands arguably the greatest Bull of all-time in its 2030 haul on the recruiting trail
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The versatile prospect that was all the rave in the 2030 recruiting class was five-star Oklahoma product Courtney Lane who some thought could legitimately be an NFL running back or receiver by the time it was all said done. Lane had a good career at USF like most of the members of this class but ultimately, it was the four-star out of California that would really capture the imagination of college football fans.

When it was all said and done, how does this class grade out? The grading criteria is as follows: 1 star for non-contributor, 2 star for depth player, 3 star for contributor, 4 star for impact starter, 5 star for a star player.

2029 USF Bulls Recruiting Class
OLB/DE Adam Hughes [OLB #1]: 6'4", 230lbs | Redstone Arsenal, AL | 5-star | 4.56 40-yd dash, 435 Bench Press Max, 555 Squat Max
Career Stats » 94 tackles, 40 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 2 interceptions, 2 pass deflections.
Analysis » Hughes didn't live up to the Travis Hughes (no relation) comparisons coming out of high school and while he was productive at times, he wasn't what many thought they were getting when he committed to USF.
Grade » 3-star

WR Courtney Lane [ATH #11]: 5'11", 213lbs | Chickasha, OK | 5-star | 4.44 40-yd dash, 280 Bench Press Mx, 295 Squat Max
Career Stats » 93 receptions, 1147 yards, 6 touchdowns, 5 carries, 44 yards, 9 kick returns, 212 yards, 8 punt returns, 77 yards.
Analysis » A quality slot receiver, Lane was never the game breaker that some thought he might have been and that might be due to both quarterback play and being in a run heavy offense but the end result is that he was just a slightly above average receiver during his time at USF.
Grade » 3-star

DE Aaron Spurlock [DE #3]: 6'5", 259lbs | Miami, FL | 5-star | 4.56 40-yd dash, 420 Bench Press Max, 620 Squat Max
Career Stats » 64 tackles, 36 tackles for loss, 26 sacks, pass deflection, 4 forced fumbles.
Analysis » It took him a bit to get going but once he got going, Spurlock was one of USF's best players on defense and a menace to opposing quarterbacks.
Grade » 4-star

HB Roger Shaw [ATH #20]: 6'2", 218lbs | Alhambra, CA | 4-star | 4.38 40-yd dash, 250 Bench Press Max, 290 Squat Max
Career Stats » 7 of 10, 86 yards, touchdown, interception, 658 carries, 4514 yards, 66 touchdowns, 103 receptions, 958 yards, 7 touchdowns.
Analysis » 100 total touchdowns would not be out of the realm had Shaw played a bit more his freshman season and also returned for his senior season. Two Heismans, two great season and arguably the greatest USF player ever and one of the best players to ever play college football.
Grade » 5-star

T/G Justin West [T #6]: 6'5", 288lbs | Pottsville, PA | 4-star | 4.96 40-yd dash, 425 Bench Press Max, 645 Squat Max
Career Stats » 14 pancakes, 12 sacks allowed.
Analysis » West struggled mightily as a true freshman and got benched for the next two seasons before being a solid starter this season at left guard.
Grade » 3-star

CB Kareem Hunter [CB #5]: 5'9", 175lbs | Front Royal, VA | 4-star | 4.30 40-yd dash, 240 Bench Press Max, 240 Squat Max
Career Stats » 86 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 5 interceptions, 2 touchdowns, 7 pass deflections.
Analysis » Started at nickel as a true freshman and graduated to being one of the team's top corners his final two seasons despite being a bit undersized.
Grade » 4-star

ILB Brent Pearson [ILB #9]: 6'0", 230lbs | Newport Beach, CA | 4-star | 4.62 40-yd dash, 390 Bench Press Max, 585 Squat Max
Career Stats » No stats at USF | 78 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, INT, 3 PBU, FF at Fresno State
Analysis » Pearson lasted just one season at USF before transferring to Fresno State where he's been a two-year starter for them.
Grade » 1-star

WR Brent Cunningham [WR #34]: 5'10", 176lbs | Waco, TX | 4-star | 4.34 40-yd dash, 240 Bench Press Max, 330 Squat Max
Career Stats » 120 receptions, 1157 yards, 13 touchdowns.
Analysis » Cunningham splashed onto the scene as a true freshman, averaging nearly fourteen yards per reception and showing flashes of being a potential future star. He struggled in 2031 making the transition to outside receiver before returning to the slow the past two seasons and posting numbers that are continuously improving. Injuries have slowed him down a bit recently but all in all, a good pickup.
Grade » 3-star

T Lance Williams [T #11]: 6'8", 324lbs | San Jose, CA | 4-star | 4.88 40-yd dash, 450 Bench Press Max, 585 Squat Max
Career Stats » 5 pancakes, 4 sacks allowed.
Analysis » Similar to West, Williams started as a true freshman before being benched for the next two seasons and unlike West, Williams is also a backup this season.
Grade » 2-star

T/G Luis Butler [T #14]: 6'5", 312lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star | 4.88 40-yd dash, 450 Bench Press Max, 630 Squat Max
Career Stats » 12 pancakes, 1 sack allowed.
Analysis » While West and Williams got on the field instantly, Butler has had to wait and is now sharing that left guard spot with West as they rotate throughout the game. He's been very good this season along with West to help sure up that left side.
Grade » 3-star

QB Brandon Wilson [QB #17]: 6'2", 196lbs | Dallas, TX | 3-star | 4.82 40-yd dash, 310 Bench Press Max, 275 Squat Max
Career Stats » 14 of 22, 167 yards, touchdown.
Analysis » Wilson got his first real playing time last week and did good, throwing for 115 yards and helping USF beat Miami but through four seasons, he's been a career backup.
Grade » 2-star

HB Terrance Small [HB #60]: 5'11", 197lbs | Plantation, FL | 3-star | 4.44 40-yd dash, 410 Bench Press Max, 265 Squat Max
Career Stats » 3 carries, 17 yards.
Analysis » Small got on the field for the first time in his career this season and scored in one of his three carries but all in all, a forgetful player.
Grade » 1-star

P Adam Cain [P #5]: 6'4", 215lbs | Tamiami, FL | 3-star | 4.68 40-yd dash, 255 Bench Press Max, 290 Squat Max
Career Stats » 82 punts, 40.6 Net Punt Average, 28 inside the 20, 4 touchbacks.
Analysis » He doesn't get a ton of opportunities due to how good the Bulls offense has been during his tenure but a career net average of 40.6 yards per punt is pretty impressive.
Grade » 3-star

DE Rick Hunter [DE #92]: 6'1", 252lbs | Venice, FL | 3-star | 5.04 40-yd dash, 340 Bench Press Max, 585 Squat Max
Career Stats » 9 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks.
Analysis » A career backup whose rotated at defensive end this year.
Grade » 2-star

Superlative Awards
Most Important Signing: Many thought Hughes would be a monster and landing a five-star that's in Alabama's backyard is always huge.

Most Productive Signing: This is an easy one: the two-time Heisman winner.

Biggest Bust of the Class: Hughes and Lane at least produced and were on the field a lot but USF got very little from Lance Williams in what was a position of need.

Most Untapped Potential: If Cunningham had gotten the chance to play with a better quarterback for the entirety of his career in a pass friendly offense like the one this season, he might have had a bigger impact.

Biggest Steal of the Class: He was a four-star prospect but had six players in USF's class alone ranked higher than him in Kareem Hunter who was a plug and play high level player.

Biggest Lost of the Class: USF doesn't lose talented receivers on the trail that they want to schools like Rutgers but that's what happened with Chris Williams (WR, Rutgers, 89 overall) who has caught 155 passes for 2507 yards and 26 touchdowns in three seasons for the Scarlet Knights.

Former USF receiver Andrew Rivas sounds off on 'pill popping problem' at USF
Chris Flores -- SB Nation: USF Bulls Affiliate

Former USF and Florida State receiver Andrew Rivas hosts a weekly podcast with two fellow high school teammates of his where the trio discuss sports, pop culture and give out advice to fans of the show.

One of the co-hosts of the show asked for Rivas' thoughts on what happened with USF quarterback Jeff Jones who left last week's game against the Miami Hurricanes with a back injury but subsequent reports mentioned that Jones might have been held out because was given an unsanctioned injection into his back to manage the pain before the game without proper notice to the coaching staff.

Rivas didn't hold back:

Reading that shit was hilarious, acting like there isn't a pill popping problem over there. I'm not there anymore, to be fair, so I can't speak on what's happening right now but there wasn't no protocol or anything when I was there. They were giving out pills lie it was candy when I was there.

Rivas went on to highlight the differences between how pain medications were distributed at USF versus at Florida State, where he transferred to play his senior season but suffering a season ending injury during the opener:

I didn't realize how fucked up it was at USF until I was at Florida State, I was out for the season, couldn't do anything so obviously I was hurt but after my surgery and rehab, if I wanted some pain meds or something, the staff would schedule me an appointment and I'd see an outside doctor and they'd give me more shit. Mind you, I'm in a cast, I can't walk, I'm obviously not faking, I obviously need it.

At USF, you just needed to pull someone to the side that was on the training staff, tell them you're not injured, you're just hurt and you need something to hold you through practice, easy work, just like that. You got to understand that over there, it's a dog eat dog world so everyone wants to be on the field and competing. If you're hurt, like actual hurt, you go on the report and the coaching staff meet every day and they also look at that report every day. If you're a receiver and you have a bone bruise or something and you on that report, guess whose not going to be featured heavily this week? You think they're going to target somebody that's hurt? Hell no, they got 100 five-stars on that team, they'll just bring somebody else up for that week and now you're getting fazed out the offense and that's for every position so the training staff also don't want to give the coaches this long ass report because then it looks like they're not doing their job and they're not keeping us healthy so they'll give you a pill or two to keep you off that report and I've never myself had an injection but I know for a fact I had teammates that were getting injected multiple times a week just to stay on the field.

You got understand that practice was like a game and the competition level was so high that during the spring and summer, it was like you were playing four, five games a week and in camp, it was like three or four and by the season, it slows down but now you got the actual games and you still got competitive sessions within those practices so you're body is bound to break down, especially that first and second year when you're still a baby, physically.

Rivas also spoke on a situation where he alleged that a support staff member was distributing illegal drugs to players and helping them pass drug tests. Rivas alleges that the staff member was relieved of his duties during his junior season but that no official announcement was ever made nor the situation addressed with the team.

[USF] actually has a good program called Beyond Football where during your junior year, sometimes your sophomore year, they have these guys that help you write a resume, get internships, figure out what you want to do with your life basically after football. So the people that work that program, they're not like actual coaches and shit, they're younger guys that are part of the program but most people don't even know they are, a lot of the players don't even know them until they enter that program the spring of your second season.

There was a guy in that department that everybody knew if you wanted to get drugs, get it from him. If you wanted to pass a drug test, hit him up. I'm not going to say his name because he was a cool dude but randomly, he just disappeared and like it was never addressed so if they're really cleaning up the drug problem at USF now, I applaud them but I just had to laugh when I read that shit.

USF has not commented on the original Tampa Bay Chronicles report and it stands to reason that USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. will likely avoid these waters for as long as he can.

Phased.

Maybe USF wouldn't be losing multiple games a season if they didn't get rid of that dude.

UCF (6-6, 5-4) | 7 | 3 | 3 | 2 || 15

Jones throws for nearly 500 yards in win over rival UCF
Jeff Jones' record breaking pace was put on hold last week when he played just one quarter in the win over the Miami Hurricanes. Jones more than made up for it on Friday night, putting up two week's worth of production in the team's 31-13 win over the Central Florida Knights.

Jones threw for 483 yards and four touchdowns, including a 45-yard touchdown pass to Robert Givens on the first drive of the game and connecting with Max McDonald on a 39-yard touchdown on the second drive of the game.

Jones eclipsed the 5,000-yard mark with his performance, extending his lead as the nation's leading passer with 5,169 yards. He is the first true freshman to pass the 5,000-yard mark and needs 664 more yards to break Kliff Kingsbury's 30-year old record. Jones is averaging 430.7 yards per game on the season and with two games left in the season, including the conference championship and the bowl game, he could not only set the record but blow by it and have a shot at 6,000 yards.
