Vols strike early but Bulls, freshman QB Spence strike back to win SEC Championship
The first play from scrimmage went 76-yards for the Tennessee Volunteers as they tried to win their first SEC championship since 1998. Despite the best efforts of their offense in the first half, the drought will continue.

Making their first career starts, USF true freshmen Joey Spence and Dionte McCarthy threw for 440 yards and rushed for 178 yards respectively with Spence tying a school record with seven touchdown passes in USF's 63-44 win over Tennessee on Saturday night to win their second SEC championship in three years and fifth since joining the conference in 2026.

The Vols offense was humming in the first half with two rushing touchdowns but USF was able to counter with two touchdowns from Spence before USF's defense was able to force Tennessee to settle for back to back field goals in the redzone while Spence continued to find endzone.

Already up 21-20, USF went for it on 4th and goal from the one-yard line with less than two minutes left and weren't able to get it. However, on the next play, Wesley Adams intercepted Charles Grant and returned it for a touchdown.

After another interception from Grant, Spence was able to find Derek Young behind the defense for a 49-yard gain and that was all she wrote as USF put the game away in the second half with their running game despite two second half interceptions from Spence.

Bulls turn down invitation to Citrus Bowl as part of self-imposed penalties
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

The University of South Florida football program will not be participating in this year's bowl season after they turned down the offer to play Rutgers in the Citrus Bowl on January 1st.

Players were informed Sunday morning that the SEC Championship game would be the last game of the season despite USF appealing the NCAA's decision to serve the Bulls a three-year bowl ban at the conclusion of their two-year long investigation into the athletic department. By self-imposing a ban, USF is trying to lessen the impact of whatever sanctions the NCAA hands down once the appeals process is finalized.

"I'm clearly disappointed," said USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr., who university officials said was not involved in the choice to go forward with the ban. "I was under the impression the entire time that we'd be playing in a bowl game so I have the same reaction as you guys, our fans, our players."

Francois Sr. said athletic director Joanne Morris and university president Rhea Law made the decision, although a statement from the university said it was done through consultation with "university leaders, athletic administrators and outside counsel." The NCAA and the Southeastern Conference were informed.

"It is a necessary step for our university," read USF's statement.

Francois Sr. said he is not "privy to" any information that Morris and Law used during the process of trying to decide whether or not going to a bowl would be a wise move.

"I know as much as you guys," Francois Sr. told the media on Sunday, "I showed up here today to find out which bowl we were playing in so as far as these discussions go, you need to go higher than me for answers. I didn't make this decision, I wasn't consulted about it so you're asking the wrong person. You need to ask [Morris and Law], it's their show, they run it. I just coach the games I'm told to coach and prepare for."

When players were told of the decision, they took the news rather hard, Francois Sr. said. USF has won the SEC Championship Game on Saturday, beating Tennessee with a backup quarterback in true freshman Joey Spence.

USF still may receive a bowl payout from the SEC, which pools revenue from postseason games and distributes to all conference members whether they play in a bowl or not.

With no bowl prep in tow, plenty of teams sniffing around USF's coaching staff
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

One of the unintended and unforeseen consequences of USF not playing in a bowl game for the first time since 2013 as part of its self-imposed sanctions is that it's assistant coaches have plenty of time availability to interview for coaching opportunities around the country.

While there has never been a shortage of Bulls assistants taking head coaching jobs, the number might increase this off-season with several top assistants rumored to be leading candidates.

At the top of the list is defensive coordinator John Butler who has already been linked to potential openings in Oklahoma, Iowa and Washington. Butler led USF to fielding the nation's top scoring defense in his lone season in Tampa and his departure wouldn't surprise many. The names that are turning heads is long-time defensive backs coach Thomas Hayes and linebackers coach Philip Humphrey.

Humphrey joined the staff in 2029 as a linebackers coach when USF hired Pat Fitzgerald to be its defensive coordinator and Hayes has been on staff since 2027. Both are among USF's top recruiters and have remained in their respective positions despite several coordinator switches since their hiring. Hayes and Humphrey have both interviewed for the head coaching opening in Louisville and could be among the top candidates on the market for Group of 5 openings that will come available as the cycle plays out.

USF might try to keep Hayes or Humphrey with a promotion to defensive coordinator, the same can be said for current defensive line coach Gary Prince. Prince was a member of the inaugural recruiting class under head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. and after five seasons with the Bulls, he joined the coaching staff in 2021 as a graduate assistance before working as an off-field analyst and in the recruiting department until 2028 when he was elevated to defensive line coach.

An elite recruiter, Prince is considered one of the rising stars in the business and could be part of a mass exodus that takes place in Tampa this coming offseason on the coaching staff front with looming sanctions.
