Homecoming Weekend nets seven commitments for Bulls, including five-stars LB Hughes and HB Green
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Nothing will ever top last year's big recruiting weekend where twelve recruits committed over the span of forty eight hours but this weekend gave it its run for its money as seven different recruits committed to the Bulls, including five-star linebacker Travis Hughes and five-star running back Derrick Green.

Joining the two five-stars were four-star QB Nick Williams, another linebacker in four-star Dallas Gross, four star guard Bobby Davis, three-star punter Marcus McClelland and three start tight end Ryne Fox.

Hughes is a big time get, perhaps the best recruit USF has ever landed in their front seven. The 22nd ranked player in the country, Hughes has running back speed with the explosive power of an elite edge rusher. He has room to fill out on his six-foot-five frame and could play either on the line of scrimmage as a stand up backer or off the ball. His best bet at the next level would be as an off the ball linebacker due to his exceptional cover ability.

Even with Hughes accolades, he's not the highest ranked recruit in the class. Green has slid in the rankings a bit since his breakout sophomore season but he's still an elite recruit. There are some redundancies between him and Gerald Mitchell from last year's class. Their numbers are almost identical but Green is a bit of a more powerful back. If David Fuller does end up signing with the Bulls, they'll have a loaded running back room, perhaps the most talented they've ever had.

The most important signee of the weekend might have been quarterback Nick Williams. USF didn't take a QB last cycle and with Mike McFarland getting injured this season, he didn't get a chance to run away with the job and likely keep USF from landing a guy like Williams. Williams is a bit more physically matured but in terms of arm talent and athleticism, they are almost carbon copies.

David and Gross' commitment probably got lost in the hype of the five-stars and a QB in Williams but they were big gets for Malcolm Francois and his staff. David fits the build of what the team wants in guard especially in their stretch and power concepts that ask their offensive lineman to get to the second level. David is a good athlete with not a lot of bad weight, if any. With Brian Smith likely headed to the NFL, an opening could be happening at guard with Davis competing for playing time.

After signing three linebackers last cycle, including two that cracked the two-deep in John Reed and Skyler Wilson, USF is signing another two linebackers to the roster. Unlike Hughes, Gross is almost guaranteed to play at the line of scrimmage in the team's 3-4 scheme. He's not as athletic as most of the other linebackers and will need to make his impact as either a pass rusher, something he hasn't done much of or setting the edge.

You need solid three-stars to have a good class and USF is hoping to perhaps find some gems in Fox and McClelland. Fox plays four-back in his high school Wing T offense but will almost certainly play tight end at the next level. There is a big question about whether or not he has enough athleticism to pull it off. This is a risky take and perhaps one the Bulls felt like they had to pull off with two seniors at tight end on the roster.

McClelland will replace senior punter Allen Carrington.

The seven commitments brought USF's class total to 14 and gave them the top ranked recruiting class in the country. While the numbers situation is always fluid due to transfers and potential early departures to the draft, the Bulls have roughly six open spots on their roster. One of those is expected to go to five-star running back David Fuller whose going to be on campus next weekend. What do they do with the other five?

They'll try and need to land at least one of the corners in Corey Johnson and Sid Robinson. Robinson is a heavy Clemson lean but with Johnson, USF is in a good spot. They wanted to sign another defensive back in Troy Bell out of Ohio who was on campus this past weekend but did not commit. While Robinson is a long shot and Bell is 50/50, USF will likely hold three roster spots for those defensive backs.

The other two could very well go to four-star receiver David Ryan and kicker Craig Tyree out of Texas. Tyree has been committed to Stanford for a while but the eight ranked kicker in the country has been in contact with USF. For Ryan, his game of chicken might be coming to an end. The four-star WR has been holding out for bigger offers but at this moment, USF and UCF are his only Power 5 offers. Mississippi State has shown interest but has yet to offer him.

Mike McFarland returns to practice but will he get green light for Texas Tech?
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

It may be that USF fans won’t know if Mike McFarland is back at quarterback until game time Saturday night against Texas Tech.

McFarland — who has missed the past five games due to an abdominal tear he suffered in the season opener — returned to USF’s practice on Wednesday morning, but all media has been told officially is that he was “stretching and moving about.”

That report came from offensive coordinator Doc Holliday after practice, but that was the extent of the update.

“We’re just waiting for the trainers to give us the clearance to turn him loose,” Holiday said. “Still waiting to get the word. You guys need to ask Coach (Malcolm) Francois that kind of stuff, it’s probably best to let him address those injury issues.”

The only problem with that is Francois doesn’t address the media after Monday’s press conference and Wednesday's press availability, so unless word leaks out, there may not be an official statement. Certainly, USF’s staff doesn’t want to tip its hand to Texas Tech for this weekend’s game.

McFarland redshirted in 2021 during the Bulls national championship run and served as QB4. Coming out of high school, McFarland, who is a native of the El Toro, California area, ranked as one of the top quarterback prospects in the country. The 247Sports Composite ranked McFarland as the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the nation.

While the Bulls are 5-1, the passing offense has struggled and is currently ranked 103rd in the country. James Pittman has improved as a passer and is a dangerous threat as a runner but has 10 interceptions on the season to just six touchdowns. Prior to the injury, McFarland had completed 83 percent of his passes.

Peach State pipeline returns as Bulls land five-star Georgia HB David Fuller, 2nd 5-star running back in class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

After being a long time Middle Tennessee State commitment, five-star running back David Fuller did what everyone expected him to do over the weekend. On Friday, Fuller committed to the South Florida Bulls before attending the team's win over Texas Tech in person for an official visit.

As is typically the case when a five-star recruit commits, Fuller's commitment overshadowed commitments from three-star defensive tackle Marcus McCauley and four-star receiver David Ryan who also committed later in the weekend.

Fuller is the third five-star recruit in the class and the second five-star running back, joining Derrick Green who committed last week. Green and Fuller have been in constant communication since USF got on Fuller's radar and according to both players, they welcomed the competition with Green congratulating Fuller on his commitment social media post.

With the addition of Fuller, USF now has four five-star recruits either on their roster or their recruiting class. Even if Troy Henry goes pro, which is expected, they'll still have three five star recruits next season in Green, Fuller and Gerald Mitchell. Their testing numbers are almost identical with both Mitchell and Fuller having ran verified 4.44 forties with Green being a tad bit slower at 4.48. All three are around the six-foot, 200 pound range with Green perhaps having the stockier build of the three.

Mitchell has been effective this season with 6.0 yards per carry and two touchdowns on 48 carries. With Greg Johnston set to graduate and Henry likely NFL bound, the path is clear for these three five-star running backs to share the load.

While it's tough to know exactly why a recruit commits when they did, David Ryan likely made a smart business decision to lock up a roster spot while he can on what is turning out to be a very good class on paper. With offers from UCF and FIU, Ryan had been a lean towards the Bulls for a while now but never pulled the trigger. The Bulls are close to closing up shop on this current class and they were able to add a very speedy receiver in Ryan. He's extremely raw as a receiver and while Mike Holmes might be a good comparison, Ryan isn't as college ready as Holmes. He'll likely have to make his bones as a special teams guy for a year or two before being able to get on the field.

McCauley is yet another three-star recruit from the Sunshine State that the Bulls have littered their roster with over the year in hopes that maybe one of them pops. This is a borderline take in my opinion as McCauley doesn't possess the level of athleticism that one would want even from an interior defensive linemen. He lacks the ideal size to play nose in a three-man front and lacks the athleticism to be a three-technique in a four-man front. McCauley only fielded offers from UAB, Memphis, Florida Atlantic and Troy. Clearly the Bulls saw something in him that many other top programs didn't.

USF is hosting cornerback Sid Robinson this weekend, the top prospect left on their big board. Ideally, Robinson and Winter Haven CB Corey Johnson would be the perfect Christmas present but it's going to be a tough battle for either of them. Johnson is visiting Vanderbilt this weekend.

Troy Bell, an athlete out of Ohio, is also visiting Temple this weekend and many of their insiders expect the four-star athlete to potential commit to the Owls. With the nation's top recruiting class, there aren't a lot to gripe about but the Bulls striking out in the defensive backfield would be a huge blow.

Henry Breaks School Record in 42-17 Over Baylor Bears
If Malcolm Francois wanted to turn the South Florida Bulls from a lowly Group of 5 school into not just a competitive team but an elite program, he needed to snatch the top tier recruits from the jaws of the bluebloods.

He did just that when he was able to sign Troy Henry right from Alabama, Auburn and the SEC's backyard and on Saturday, Henry broke the school record for single season rushing yards and tied the single season rushing touchdown record in the 42-17 win over Baylor.

Henry rushed for 222 yards and five touchdowns, breaking the yardage record on his fourth touchdown to give him 1,455 yards on the season with four more regular season games to go. He tied Michael Pierre's record on the next touchdown, his 21st of the season. If Henry is able to break that record, he would hold all of the team's rushing records.
