Jones sets NCAA passing record, flirts with 6,000-yards in 24-6 win over Northwestern
In a game where a true freshman quarterback set the NCAA record for most passing yards in a single season and almost eclipsed 6,000-yards, it was defense that ruled the day.

Northwestern's offense put up just 229 yards of total offense, converting just ten first downs the entire game as USF was able to easily take care of the Wildcats 24-6 on New Year's Day to win the Outback Bowl.

USF true freshman quarterback Jeff Jones broke the single-season passing record previously held by Kliff Kingsbury from 2003 in the second quarter when he completed a nine-yard pass to Max McDonald. McDonald had 121 of Jones' 243 first half yardage before sitting for the rest of the game.

Robert Givens caught three passes for 83 yards, becoming the third Bull receiver behind McDonald and Bryan Mangum to pass the 1,000-yard mark on the year, giving USF three 1,000-yard receivers which hadn't happened since 2009 when the Houston Cougars had three 1,000-yard receivers.

Kentucky announces USF offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr. as next head coach
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

The University of Kentucky football program has formally announced that former USF offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr. will be the team's next head coach.

Francois Jr, who is the son of USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr, followed his father's footsteps as a receiver for the Bulls before joining the staff as a receiver's coach following his graduation and brief stint as an analyst.

Francois Jr. spent the last two seasons as USF's offensive coordinator and called plays for the first time this past season, leading USF's offense to historic numbers, specifically with quarterback Jeff Jones who set the NCAA record for single season passing yards as a true freshman.

The news is no surprise to Bulls fans as Francois Jr. had interviewed for head coach openings at Illinois, Eastern Michigan, UCLA and Cal before the Wildcats decided to make the 29-year old one of the youngest P5 head coaches of all time.

A talented recruiter, Francois Jr. landed three five-star receivers last cycle as a primary recruiter and was heavily involved in the recruitment of Jones. He will try to turn around a Wildcat program that is 27-36 in the past five years under head coach Kalani Sitake and has never won a NY6 bowl nor won a national championship and whose last SEC championship was in 1977.

USF has reportedly already began to interview for a replacement with names such as former UCLA head coach Jeremy Butler being thrown around as well as Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner who runs a very similar Air Raid system as Francois Jr. installed last season as well as former USF quarterback Grant Oliver who is the current OC at UAB.

Another option would be an internal promotion of current QB coach Mario Greer in which Francois Sr. resuming play calling duties would be likely.

Bulls extend head coach Francois Sr. amid QB Jones transfer rumors
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. contract has been extended through 2037 after receiving a four-year extension (and raise) last season that locked him up until the 2036 season.

The timing of the announcement is very interesting given the recent rumors swirling around record setting true freshman QB Jeff Jones leaving USF to join former USF offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr. at Kentucky.

The Tampa Bay Chronicles can confirm via a source with direct knowledge of the situation that Jones is considering following his offensive coordinator but the same source said that the most likely outcome is that other players, not Jones, are the ones who follow Francois Jr. to Kentucky, citing Jones' father's 'really good relationship' with Francois Sr. as a reason why Jones might choose to stay at USF.

The same source cited that the trio of freshman receivers Kevin Morris, Buck Duckett and Marques Iosefo as names to watch and if Kentucky is able to land all three in the transfer market, Jones to Kentucky would become a real possibility. Iosefo and Jones are particularly close but again, Jones' father's preference, according to the source, is for Jones to remain at USF with Francois Sr. and have 'significant input' on the next offensive coordinator.

Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is a name that has been thrown around and many within the program feel that Faulkner's pass heavy offense, similar to Francois Jr, would help USF keep a lot of the talent on the roster.

USF QB coach Greer promoted to offensive coordinator, expected to call plays in 2034
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF quarterback coach Mario Greer has been promoted to offensive coordinator following the departure of Malcolm Francois Jr. to be the next head coach at the University of Kentucky.

Greer, who played for the Bulls from 2015 until 2020, joined the Bulls coaching staff in 2022 as a graduate assistant and was soon promoted to analyst and eventually QB coach following Grant Oliver's departure to be the offensive coordinator at Michigan in 2027.

Other candidates that USF interviewed were former UCLA head coach Jeremy Butler and Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. Butler took the head coaching job at San Jose State and Faulkner took the offensive coordinator job at Navy where he'll try to install his Air Raid offense. USF was interested in former Bulls player and coach Grant Oliver but the interest never materialized with Oliver opting to interview for OC jobs with Florida State and Oregon State and being hired by the Beavers to be their new play caller.

It remains to be seen if Greer, whose never called plays before, will take over play calling duties or if head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. will once again be the offensive play caller which he has done in the past with an inexperienced offensive coordinator.

Greer's first task will be to keep quarterback Jeff Jones whose been linked to Kentucky and following Francois Jr. there.

USF QB Jackson leads group of transfers to Kentucky with former OC
Sean Caesar -- The Athletic Writer

USF redshirt sophomore Thomas Jackson and freshmen receivers Kevin Morris and Buck Duckett along with sophomore running back Danny Felder are all transferring to Kentucky to play for the Wildcats and head coach Malcolm Francois Jr.

All four players have played for the Bulls with Felder and Jackson having several starts to their name, most notably Felder who was the starter at running back this season while Jackson started a few games as a redshirt freshman last year.

The two freshmen receivers were recruited by Francois Jr. to USF while he was the receivers coach and eventually the offensive coordinator. Two former five stars, Francois Jr. gets a much needed talent injection immediately upon his arrival although it doesn't appear he was able to land the services of Jeff Jones.

Jones was rumored to be interested in transferring but Jackson's decision to go to Kentucky is likely a sign that Jones, as previously reported, has decided to stay at USF.

NCAA, USF running independent probe into football program
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Both the NCAA and the University of South Florida are actively investigating the university's football program and specifically its pain medication distribution protocols as well as drug testing.

The investigations were independent of each other and its unclear if the university's probe is what led to NCAA's interest or if its the other way around.

The football program's pain management administration was first brought into question this season when quarterback Jeff Jones left a game with an injury and it was reported by The Tampa Bay Chronicles that he did not re-enter the game due to an unsanctioned injection that Jones was given to deal with his injury prior to the game. The report made mention of an unwritten protocol at USF where players were limited the number of pain medications they could taken within an allotted period.

Former USF receiver Andrew Rivas then made comments on his podcast that suggested that the administering of pain medications at USF weren't regulated, claims that the school nor USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. have yet to comment on.

Ford, McDonald declare for draft following stellar junior seasons
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF juniors CB Damien Ford and WR Max McDonald, who both came in as heralded out of state recruits and lived up to the hype, have announced their decision to forego their senior season and declare for the NFL Draft.

Ford, an All-SEC player two of his three seasons and an All-American as a junior, is expected to be one of the top defensive backs selected in this spring's draft. An undersized and understated corner, Ford has recorded nine interceptions in three seasons at USF and has been one of the better corners in the SEC since his true freshman season.

McDonald will need to impress at the combine in order to potentially become a day one prospect but the versality that he's shown in college, playing both outside and in the slot, will make him at least a day two pick in the NFL Draft. After playing in a run heavy offense his first two seasons and catching a total of 85 passes through his first two seasons, McDonald bested those numbers as a junior with 91 receptions for 1,264 yards and sixteen touchdowns, all more than he had amassed the previous two seasons combined.

USF lands former four-star defensive end Kevin Beck from Alabama
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

University of Alabama defensive end Kevin Beck had announced that he'll be transferring from the Tide to their SEC East rival USF Bulls this upcoming summer.

The six-foot-three, 252 pound defensive end is originally from West Augusta, Georgia and was a four-star prospect who committed to the Crimson Tide last winter. He recorded four tackles and three tackles for loss along with a sack this season in limited playing time before deciding to transfer.

USF wasn't originally involved in Beck's recruitment as a high school senior but were able to land one of the top transfers in Beck this time around.

The Bulls will hope to carry some of the momentum of that recruitment into National Signing Day where it'll try to close a class with its top recruiter now in Lexington. Malcolm Francois Jr. and the Wildcats aren't expected to players in the recruitment of a lot of the players that USF is trying to close the deal in on, including five-star running back Bobby Jackson.

However, he was heavily involved in the recruitment of five-stars Stephen Jenkins, Daniel Green and Will Green, especially Will Green. It's likely too late in the cycle for him to try to flip them to Kentucky but his absence could be crippling to USF when going head to head against other schools that have kept their staff, for the most part, in place.

In speaking to the folks in Tampa, confidence is high on select players such as Jackson and five-star cornerback Chuck Jennings but the staff is aware that they're fighting an uphill climb with a lot of the other prospects.
