Jackson and bust as Bulls swing and miss on National Signing Day
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The University of South Florida's National Signing Day got off to a great start with running back Bobby Jackson committing to the Bulls over Ole Miss and Alabama. As they day went on, it seemed like a distant memory as USF hats kept being left on the table.

Five-star cornerback Chuck Jennings went with LSU over USF, five-star wide receiver Daniel Green chose the Tide, five-star running back Stephen Jenkins chose Ole Miss as did five-star receiver Will Green and a slew of other four-stars such as defensive end Luke Cason, offensive guard Eric Johnson and Dennis Woods all chose Oregon, FIU and Penn State respectively.

Even three-star safety Alex Griffith went with Ohio with three-star offensive tackle Steven Ham choosing to sign with Navy and punter Vince Baker opted to stay home and play for the Green Wave.

It was a somber day for a school that still finished with a top ten class and three five-stars but it wasn't the finish that Bulls fans wanted or needed, especially after losing four talented players in the transfer portal to Kentucky.

Malcolm Francois Jr. definitely had an impact on the recruiting trail as well as the looming investigation into the Bulls football program by both the NCAA and the school itself. In speaking to parents and coaches, it was a conversation that a lot of them had with the coaching staff and left not feeling too confident in sending their kids there both with the scandal itself and the potential fallout.

It wasn't enough to deter the nation's number two prospect in Bobby Jackson who will join an offense in 2034 that will need him as he instantly becomes, at worst, their sixth best offensive skill player. A dynamic runner with the ball in his hands, Jackson has game breaking ability with his speed and shiftiness. He'll be able to contribute in the running game, passing attack as well as special teams as a returner.

Walk-ons get plenty of burn at receiver during spring game
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

As soon as USF tight end Matthew Smith got split out to the sideline as a receiver, the fans in the stadium erupted for a cheer that roared even louder when the senior caught a quick pass and turned up the field for a modest gain.

Smith underwent surgery on his broken fibula back in December and the fact that he was even on the field, even in a limited capacity, in April was impressive. His three receptions were icing on the cake as Team Rocky beat Team Bulls 17-14.

USF sophomore Jeff Jones was the one that completed those three passes to Smith although he also got acquainted with receivers that were literally off the streets of campus. USF played four non-scholarship receivers during the spring, including two in Michael Arrington and Ryan Sullivan that started for Team Bulls.

Jones finished the game 15 of 25 for 159 yards, with one touchdown and an interception. Brandon Wilson, who started the game for Team Bulls, was 16 of 24 for 212 yards, mostly throwing to inexperienced, non-scholarship receivers.

The depth at receiver is thin with just two scholarship receivers in Robert Givens and Marques Iosefo although new offensive coordinator Mario Greer is likely to use Matthew Smith as essentially a receiver especially with the emergence of true freshman five-star tight end Chris Wallace during the spring.

Even with Smith and Wallace, it's slim pickings at what used to be the premier position for the Bulls.

Other notes from the spring:

  • The offensive line is a work in progress although it has a few solid anchors in returning starters Cedric George and Kyle Parker. Redshirt junior Josh Hardy is likely the answer at left guard and center Brandon Franklin is the only answer at center. Joe Williams outplayed Tony Kelly at right tackle in the spring, getting the start on Saturday but it'll be a highly contested matchup going into the fall.

If Greer's offense is like Malcolm Francois Jr's, and that was the selling point in promoting him, the offensive line won't have to do too much but with USF losing so many skill players, they'll need to give Jones ample time for those unproven receivers to get open.
  • USF has another college ready true freshman corner in former four-star Jeremy Daniels which they desperately needed after losing Adam Kelly to graduation and Damien Ford to the draft.

Daniels was impressive in the spring game, intercepting Jones. He'll likely start off in the slot but wouldn't be surprised if he ends up challenging either Kevin Cronin or Joe Jackson for playing time by the end of the season.

USF has hit on a string of corners now starting with Kareem Hunter, Damien Ford, Richie Cowan, Joe Jackson and now seemingly Daniels.
  • Learning curve has been steep for another true freshman in defensive back Fred Harris whose also adjusting to the SEC speed after playing at Michigan.

He's talented and the coaching staff raves about his physicality and smarts but what was on display this Saturday was his lack of top end speed, getting beat a few times for deep passes that weren't always caught.

He flirted with a transition to linebacker during a week of spring practices but played safety exclusively during the spring game so it appears that the coaching staff is going to try to let him make his bones at his natural position.
  • The stage is set at running back for five-star Bobby Jackson to make it his job upon his arrival after none of the running backs showed much in the spring game.

Terrance Small had the best gain, a 13-yard scamper on the outside before being pushed out of bounds that helped seal the win but besides that, it was a ho-hum performance from the rest of the guys which were William Jones and Jason Gibson, who redshirted last season.

Jones has the top end speed as does Small but neither has quite the juice that Greer seems to want out of the running game as he's mentioned that word, juice, a few times during his media availabilities out of the spring when asked what he's looking for at that position.

You can't read a scouting report of Jackson's and not see that word show up in terms of his explosiveness so it's clear its his job to lose come fall camp.

Greer not interested in replacing Francois Jr, excited to be first-time play caller
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

It's often said that you don't want to be the guy replacing the guy but rather be the guy replacing the guy that's replacing the guy. For new USF offensive coordinator Mario Greer, none of that matters to him. He has a job in front of him and he's focused on doing it at the highest level.

Greer will be calling plays this fall for the USF Bulls, a note that both Greer and USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. confirmed after the spring game. Greer was promoted to OC after spending the past six seasons at USF as their quarterbacks coach under four different coordinators in Rhett Lashlee, Calvin Magee and both Francois'.

Under the previous OCs before Francois Jr, Greer had his hands full with just learning the ropes of the trade as a first time position coach after being promoted as an analyst. A backup player during his time at USF, Greer approached Francois Sr. two years after his graduation looking for an opportunity to get into coaching. Greer would spend the next few seasons as a gopher, running odd jobs for the coaching staff but unable to be on the field coaching players per NCAA rules.

When Greer's college teammate, Grant Oliver, who was on staff as the quarterbacks coach left for Michigan to become the OC under Walt Wells, who recruited Greer, he had the opportunity to go to Michigan as well as their QB coach. Greer, once again, approached Francois Sr. and asked for the opportunity to be an on field coach.

Francois Sr. believed in him them and he believes in him now, entrusting Greer with a young talented quarterback like Jeff Jones who soared so high in 2033 that going down seems to be the only option. Add in a new OC in Greer and losing three of his top five receivers to the draft and two other freshmen receivers to the portal and three starting offensive linemen and it adds up.

Greer, however, isn't interested in that.

"It's football at the end of the day," said Greer when asked about his plans for the offense in 2034 and what fans can expect from his offense, "You can get caught up in labeling and trying to put into a few words what your offense is but you do things that you do well often and you try to improve on the things that you don't do well during practice and go from there."

If the spring game was any indication, Greer's offense is a bit more balanced than Francois Jr's offense that saw Jones throw the ball over 700 times.

Greer's first test will be off the field, however, and on the recruiting trail where Francois Jr's absence was felt during National Signing Day as USF swung and miss on many top prospects. Greer has been the primary recruiter on consensus top quarterback Joey Spence out of Arizona. Spence and other top prospects such as Jarod Green will be on campus for USF's Green and Gold Bash.

It's an event that Francois Jr. started four seasons ago in August where the Bulls host a lot of the nation's top prospects, unofficially, and host a 7-on-7 tournament for sophomores and juniors. Spence was at the event last season and was the MVP of the 7-on-7 tournament. Greer's recruiting prowess has yet to be proven and landing the nation's top signal caller would be quite the opening statement.

Bulls to host Anderson, Ohio State after recruiting debacle
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

It only took four years but Brian Anderson is returning to Tampa, Florida.

Anderson was once the nation's top quarterback recruit and despite being committed to the Buckeyes, Anderson took an official visit to USF and flirted with potentially going to the school.

During his official visit, Anderson left the game early, a game that USF was losing. Anderson posted on his social media page a head palm emoji and did not attend the customary Sunday morning breakfast with head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. at his home along with the other recruits.

Anderson downplayed the decision at the time, replying to a tweet that was reporting the news on Sunday night stating that he simply wanted to get home early once his parents were able to find a flight earlier in the day. This led to a back and forth between Anderson and fans as well as USF commit and fellow four-star recruit Chris Green.

"If you don't wanna be here, we don't want you" Green commented on one of Anderson's exchanges with a fan to which Anderson did not reply.

Green would end up transferring to South Alabama after just one season at USF.

Bulls land nation's top quarterback in Spence, five-star WR McDowell during Green and Gold Bash
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Five-star quarterback Joey Spence and five-star receiver Jason McDowell have joined four-star safety Wesley Adams and four-star wide receiver Sam Washington as USF commits in the 2035 recruiting class.

Both Spencer and McDowell were on campus for the Green and Gold Bash event this past weekend where USF hosted several top recruits, including Adams and Washington who were putting the full court press on Spence, the nation's top passer to commit.

"The love was real," said Spence, out of Arizona, "It was actual an easy decision once I stopped and really thought about it."

Spence was also considering Alabama, USC, Michigan and Texas. McDowell was also considering Alabama but when Spence told him he'd be going to USF, it was a no-brainer for McDowell as well.

Listed at six-foot-four and 220 pounds, Spence has all the makings of a future first round pick at quarterback and at this point in the process, probably the most developed quarterback that USF has ever signed. He might not have all the tools of a Jed White physically but as a passer, he's far beyond where White was as a high school senior and even Jeff Jones and Antonio Whitehead. The only other comp as a passer might be Nick Williams but even then, Spence might get the edge with his size and having just enough mobility.

McDowell and Washington will join a depleted USF WR corps next season that will be without Matthew Smith and likely Robert Givens should the junior declare early, leaving USF with just one returning scholarship receiver in Marques Iosefo, who would be a junior that season.

McDowell is a big receiver at six-foot-five and 220 pounds but extremely nimble on his feet with his long strides that leave defensive backs in the dust. Despite his height, he hasn't had to make a lot of contested catches which is the only aspect of his game that's unproven as a receiver but he's a polished and developed receiver that could play immediately.

Washington, a local prospect, isn't as developed of a receiver and not as gifted physically but the Bulls need receivers and those from the South Florida area typically pan out for them.

Defending the trio of offensive studs for the next few years at practice will be IMG Academy stud Wesley Adams. Since arriving at IMG from West Virginia, Adams has been a ball hawk and playmaking phenom, capable of playing in the box, as a free safety and also on the outside on defense. A lanky player at six-foot-five, Adams is a physical freak that has plenty of room to grow both physically and skill wise.

No surprises as Bulls release first official depth chart of the season ahead of opener
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The University of South Florida football program has released their first official depth chart of the season.

There were very little surprises with redshirt sophomore Tony Kelly winning the starting job at left guard over redshirt junior Josh Hardy. Kelly was a backup tackle during his first two seasons at USF but with the opening at guard, he was able to slide inside and win out the competition. With a redshirt senior at left tackle in Kyle Parker, it's likely that Kelly does eventually end up back at left tackle next season.

A few true freshman also won starting jobs or at least a piece of it, including running back Bobby Jackson who wasn't on campus until the summer but still managed to be a co-starter along with redshirt senior Terrance Small and William Jones. First-time OC Mario Greer has been vocal about using multiple running backs this season.

Fellow five-star tight end Chris Wallace is also a starter at tight end after All-SEC tight end Matthew Smith formally made the move to receiver due to depth issues at that position.

Defense leads the way for Bulls in 56-7 win over Georgia as QB Jones leaves with concussion
Through three quarters and a half, USF's defense had kept Georgia's offense out of the endzone and dominated from the start of the whistle.

Even with a late fourth quarter score, it wasn't enough to keep it respectable as USF routed the Bulldogs 56-7 on Saturday night in their season opener.

Second-year quarterback Jeff Jones, who set NCAA passing records as a true freshman, played just one half before leaving the game and entering concussion protocol. USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. said the injury wasn't serious and that Jones is expected to be at practice as soon as Monday and that they kept him out of the game out of precaution.

Despite playing just a half, Jones still finished with 249 yards passing and four touchdowns.

Replacing Jones was Jared Barr who went 7 of 12 as a passer for 52 yards with a red zone interception but had a 55-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Francois Sr. said the reason Barr entered the game instead of listed backup Brandon Wilson was due to the nature of the game, already up four touchdowns and opting to go with the more mobile Barr to help their rushing attack.

USF rushed for 273 yards under first-year offensive coordinator Mario Greer.

Truly a GOAT chise. Even if I tried to copy it, I couldn't write the articles and storylines like you. Great job!
