Despite NCAA sanctions, Bulls land top five recruiting class with NSD commitment from Manning
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Five-star receiver D.J. Manning has committed to the University of South Florida over Florida State, Alabama and others.

Manning is the third five-star receiver in USF's top 4 recruiting class and the fourth five-star, joining fellow receivers Maurice Bennett and Brian Harris along with cornerback Tyler Matthews.

A smooth route runner, Manning's game is very similar to former USF receiver Marques Iosefo as he gets in and out of his breaks very easily to create separation despite not having top end speed. Manning is also very effective with the ball in his hands having played running back through his youth football days. Manning is the prototypical slot receiver that should pair well with two outside receivers in Bennett and Harris.

Top breakout or shut up performers to keep an eye out for during USF spring ball
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

USF started spring practices this past Friday with tons of excitement around quarterback Joey Spence, the five-star recruit that threw for a school record seven touchdown passes in his lone start this past season.

Despite losing several key starters to the draft, USF is still expected to be a contender in the SEC and with the post-season ban lifted, a potential College Football Playoff selection.

Here are the top players to watch throughout spring:

  • EDGE Kevin Beck
In his first season since transferring to USF, Beck recorded three sacks along with six tackles for loss as a full-time starter for the Bulls last year. At six-foot-three and 265 pounds, Beck has all of the physical tools to put up those statline in just one game.

He still has two years of eligibility left but if everything goes according to plan, Beck should be NFL bound by this time next spring.

He's not the most natural of pass rushers and can sometimes take himself out of plays with his pass rush. He needs to improve his rush lane discipline and utilize his bull rush more which was effective at times last season but used sparingly. With another off-season program in his belt, Beck should continue to get stronger, making that bull rush even more deadly.
    -
  • LB Stephen Dixon
A former four-star recruit, to say that Tampa native Stephen Dixon has been a disappointment would be an understatement.

He's entering his senior season with zero career stats and 8 tackles to his name, all coming last season on special teams. Dixon was stuck behind high school and college
teammate Chris Williams who is now in the NFL. Dixon will still need to fight off juniors Clint Parker and Quentin Williams, who are all bigger and longer than Dixon whose size has kept him off the field.

He hasn't put on the weight that the coaching staff expected him to and remains an undersized Mike linebacker that can get swallowed up in the running game while also not being an elite athlete when out in space. Not a great combination for Dixon but he's a workout warrior that's impressive the strength and conditioning staff, naming him one of their top performers.
    -
  • WR Jarod Green
What is a true sophomore doing on this list? Take a gander at practice and not only does Maurice Bennett not look out of place, he looks like he's been there for a few seasons already.

The chiseled six-foot-four receiver might take somebody's job this spring if they're not careful. He put on impressive showings during the spring workouts and was one of the standouts according to coaches in the first spring practices.

USF has reimagined their wide receiver room that was in shambles just a few seasons ago and now have six five-star receivers in Bennett, Derek Young, Jason McDowell, Jarod Green, Brian Harris and D.J. Manning who is enrolling in the summer. Add in four-star Sam Washington who was uber productive in limited snaps last season (17 receptions, 355 yards, 3 touchdowns) and it's a crowded, crowded room.

Bennett and McDowell's unique size and speed all but guarantee them playing time while Young might be the most dynamic of them all. Washington's ability as a returner and from the slot bode well for his ability to get on the field.

Where does that leave Green? He's in the same both Brian Harris, trying to earn snaps in the slot which is where Young is also now playing. When Manning gets on campus, that'll be yet another slot receiver trying to make the most of their opportunities.
    -
  • LT Tony Kelly
While Kelly doesn't look like your prototypical left tackle at just six-foot-four, he might be the top tackle off the board next spring if he's able to put together a real strong 2036 season.

He excelled as a redshirt sophomore at left guard before moving to left tackle last season where he was still very good but not as dominant. With a year under his belt, Kelly can prove the scouting services that had him as the top rated tackle coming out of high school right.

USF WR Jarod Green back on campus after brief portal existence while four others remain
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

With the spring game less than 24 hours away, four more USF players have entered the transfer portal in redshirt senior center Jasper Lee, redshirt senior defensive tackle Michael Guillory and redshirt senior linebackers Brad Davis and Jim Thompson.

All four players were expected to compete for backup roles in the spring at their respective positions.

The string of players entering the portal started on Tuesday when former five-star receiver Jarod Green's name popped up on there for a few hours prior to removal. It's unclear if it was clerical error but given the process, it's highly unlikely as a school has 48-hours to process a student-athlete's request to enter the transfer portal. It's typically during that 48-hour window that a college coaching staff will try to get a player to withdraw their request even before it's made public. For a player of Green's caliber, who caught 16 passes as a true freshman for 237 yards and four touchdowns, to enter the portal for a few hours is strange.

The rest of the players remained in the portal and are expected to play their final college football season elsewhere. It's no surprise that with these four additional transfers, USF now sits with sixty scholarship players which is their limit due to the NCAA sanctions.

Depth concerns evident in USF's spring game as star Bobby Jackson heals back from injury
Sean Caesar -- The Athletic Writer

USF junior running back Bobby Jackson was salivating on the Bulls sideline this past Saturday as he saw a now seasoned offensive line opening the holes that will be his to run through come the fall.

"We've got a very good group up front," said Jackson, who says he's fully healthy after having season ending surgery on his knee last year.

Jackson missed most of last season in what he calls a 'mini-redshirt year' and was held out of the spring game out of precaution as Team Rocky pounded Team Bulls to a 35-10 victory.

As indicated by the score, it wasn't a competitive game as the first-team offense on Team Rocky had some good battles with the first-team defense on Team Bulls but moving the ball was arduous for the second team offense on Team Bulls.

Second-year quarterback Jared Chavis completed just 30 percent of his passes for the second team while Joey Spence was an efficient 17 of 21 for 174 yards and three touchdowns. His first two of the day went to tight end Chris Wallace, who was awarded the No. 1 jersey at halftime.

Wallace didn't play in the second half as he didn't need to, having caught 164 balls for 2334 yards his first two seasons at USF for twenty touchdowns. He won the Mackey in 2035 and is eager to repeat it this year under a new quarterback in Spence.

"We've got some good rhythm," Wallace said of him and Spence, "He threw to me a lot last year too during practice so it's not like a whole brand new thing between us."

Wallace had some good matchups with linebacker Josh Anderson, who batted down a would-be touchdown and led the way with 13 tackles.

Sophomore defensive end Travis Peters sacked Chavis twice, including a strip fumble that was recovered by the defense. Chavis was also intercepted by redshirt senior Joel Bradley.

With no Jackson, there were only two running backs playing in redshirt junior Jason Gibson with Team Rocky and sophomore Dionte McCarthy with Team Bulls. It was a tough day for McCarthy whose seven carries went nowhere. Gibson had thirteen carries and averaged 4.7 yards per carry, right around his career average during his time at USF. Neither offense ran the ball much in what seemed like a coordinated effort to keep the physicality in check with the reduced scholarship numbers.

"It was a good showing," said head coach Malcolm Francois Sr, "No body got hurt, the freshmen got their feet wet, good first outing for everyone. I thought it was competitive."

First-year receiver Maurice Bennett caught a touchdown pass but missed another towards the back of the endzone as he failed to control it once he came down with it. It was one of the few throws that Chavis had put on the money, down the field. The rest of the freshmen and sophomore receivers on Team Bulls -- Jarod Green and Brian Harris -- did not have a catch for over ten yards.

Can USF land another top ten class amid NCAA sanctions and restrictions?
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The initial effects of the NCAA sanctions have been felt with defensive tackle Michael Guillory transferring to UCLA, center Jasper Lee transferring to Florida, quarterback Jared Barr heading to Kentucky and receiver Michael Arrington and linebackers Fred Harris, Brad Davis and Jim Thompson to N.C. State.

The transfers leave USF with their allotted sixty scholarship players which they will need to keep in mind as the next recruiting cycle kicks up. Even in a smaller class, USF could still walk away with some high end talent, just at a lower volume.

They are big players for five-star quarterback Charlie Cooke, who has a lot of similarities to Joey Spence in terms of playing style and build, although Spence is a bit taller and Cooke is a bit thicker in the lower body. It'll be a tough battle to pull Cooke out of Alabama's grasp but the Bulls are a live underdog.

There's also the three headed monsters at running back of William Sapp, Eric Valentine and Sam Nicholson, all five-star running backs that USF is trying to recruit together. While the Bulls have landed talented running backs before in the same class, landing three of their caliber would be a record. If the name Sapp sounds familiar, it should be as William is the son of former USF great Franklin Sapp.

Another legacy recruit in this class is four-star center Matt Callahan, who is Dwayne Callahan's younger brother, a former defensive tackle for the Bulls. Joey Bailey is Tavarious Bailey's son, who was part of the Bulls inaugural recruiting class under Malcolm Francois Sr.

Wallace eyes 1,500-yard mark as he looks to repeat as Mackey Award winner
Adriana Castillo -- usfwire.usatoday.com

If USF tight end Chris Wallace needed any more motivation, not being named First Team All-American after winning the Mackey Award as a true sophomore last season was the icing on the cake.

The nomination went to UL Lafayette Reggie Williams who caught ninety passes for 1,295 yards and fifteen touchdowns, besting Wallace's 73-1074-9 statline from last season. Wallace has his eyes set on bigger numbers this year that won't put into question who the best tight end in the country is.

"I want 1,500 yards, easily. That's just the floor for me," said Wallace during his media availability with the press at SEC Media Day, "The real goal is 2,000 [yards] but for now, [1,500 yards] is what we'll talk about."

Wallace is a team captain of the #8 ranked USF Bulls will look to punch their ticket back into the College Football Playoffs after a one-year hiatus.

What to watch for on offense: Prior to his season-ending injury, Bobby Jackson was averaging 126.3 yards per game in Doug Nussmeier's offense on a staggering 8.7 yards per carry. He was still being incorporated into the passing game as well with ten catches in four games, averaging 16.2 yards per reception and 40.5 receiving yards per game. Needless to be said, if those numbers continue over a season, Jackson is due for a big year.

What to watch for on defense: The two all-world safeties in Mark Robinson and Wesley Adams, who had no problem replacing the championship duo of Clayton Bradford and Zach Mack. They made the big plays as freshmen but the next step is to tighten up on the coverage mishaps and improve their run support.

The team will be far better if... Joey Spence is as good as advertised. He came in with a ton of hype and in his first start, threw for seven touchdowns in the SEC championship game, not bad. If he's actually that good, there's no reason USF isn't playing in the CFP by the end of the season.

The Schedule: It's a brutal October and November for the Bulls who play three top ten teams back to back in Alabama, Penn State and Stanford, with the first two being on the road. Prior to that, it's a homestand against Georgia as they try to get revenge for last season.

Ending that three-game stretch is another tough stretch of Auburn at home followed by a month of road games in Texas, Florida State and Miami before ending the season at home against UCF.

Best offensive player: Throughout their careers, Jackson has averaged 88.3 rushing yards per game on top of 26.6 receiving yards while Wallace is at 83.4 yards per game. When healthy, Jackson has been the more explosive player but Wallace is as reliable as they come. Pick your poison.

Best defensive player: Senior defensive tackle Ron Cox is the sleeper pick here as he can always disrupt a game at any moment but Wesley Adams turned several games last season around with his playmaking abilities.

Key players to a successful season: USF brings back their starting offensive line except for at right tackle where its James Cochran that's going to try to replace Joe Williams. There are things to like about Cochran, especially in the running game, but he's unproven and if last season was any indication, USF wants to run the ball with Jackson in the lineup and they need that offensive line doing some moving up front for him.

Defensively, whose going to the dynamic player in the middle that USF has always had? On paper, it should be Josh Anderson, the third-year linebacker that's been a key player since he was a freshman. If Anderson can take that next step into being a playmaker, USF's defense should remain true to the form despite the change at DC with first-time coordinator Gary Prince taking the reigns.

The season will be a success if...USF is in contention to make the College Football Playoffs.

Key game: The October 5th trip into Tuscaloosa will let Bulls fans know exactly where they stand this season.

Spence officially named starter ahead of opener against Texas A&M
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The University of South Florida has released its first official depth chart of the season ahead of it's season opener and as expected, quarterback Joey Spence will be it's starter.

Spence played in four games last season, starting in the SEC Championship Game in place of the injured Jeff Jones. In those four games, Spence threw for 890 yards and thirteen touchdowns, seven coming against Tennessee in a record-tying performance to win the SEC. Spence also threw three interceptions in that game and six on the season, an interception rate he'll hope to get under control.

Other first-time starters included true freshman receiver Maurice Bennett, redshirt junior Jamie Cochran at right tackle and all of the linebackers.
