USF taking advantage of early UCF matchup to host biggest recruiting weekend of the season
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF normally plays rival UCF in the last game of the season or close to it but due to a scheduling conflict, the Bulls are playing the Knights in the first weekend of October and USF is taking full advantage of it with a slew of top recruits expected to be on campus for their official visits.

5-star prospect Dave Parker, 4-star defensive linemen Seth Whitaker, four-star outside linebacker Oliver Colvin, four-star cornerbacks Brandon Bryant and Anthony Sharp, four-star tight end Jake Bryant, four-star offensive linemen Kevin Brown and Luis Pearson and four-star safety Shawn Franklin are all locked in to take their official visits next weekend when the Bulls come off their early bye week to play the Knights.

USF is going to be pushing hard to land some commitments during that weekend, particularly for in-state prospects Whitaker, Sharp, Bryant and Parker who spent a lot of time around the program this past offseason in the spring and summer. USF felt good about where they stood with those players heading into the season and with impressive performances against Alabama and Stanford, the on-field play has only elevated USF's confidence in being able to land these top recruits.

The Bullpen: USF's defense was plenty advertised, yet exceeding expectations
Jonathan Bright -- BullsNation.com Football Reporter

USF was one play away from shutting out a Stanford offense that had scored 89 points in its first two Champions Division game of the season and returned most of the starters' from last year's team which almost went wire to wire as college football's best team.

USF's defense gave up a lot of big plays in their first two games of the season but hunkered down last week, showing they aren't reliant on turnovers to be a great defense. They have arguably college football's best defensive coordinator in Trai Martinez and while losing top end talents like E.J. Young and Kyle Locher to the draft and graduation is tough, it's evident now that there's a ton of talent still on this defense.

Just how much talent? The team's leading tacklers are Clarence Sullivan (five star prospect), Damon Hill (four star), Charlie Robinson (four star), Akeem Smith (four star) and Anthony Gunn, the lone three-star. The only other three-stars in the team's starting unit are Ryan Robinson, who was a freak athlete, and Brandon Smith who was an elite prospect prior to his injuries as a junior and senior.

USF's top end talent is also the top of the top with Sullivan being the top ranked safety of his class, Hill the third ranked linebacker, Robinson was the top corner of his class, and Akeem Smith was a top five corner in that same class as well.

Stars do matter in college football.

‣ Checking in on the freshmen at the quarter mark of the season

USF signed nineteen recruits in their top recruiting class this past spring with many of them expected to make an impact as true freshmen. Are they?

Starting at the top, Justin Thomas is still getting his feet wet, averaging 3.9 yards per carry along with two touchdowns as USF's second leading rusher with 106 rushing yards. He's been plenty involved with just eleven fewer carries than Jacob Wheeler so he's due to pop one. The other five-star skill players are Eddie Shaw (15 receptions, 178 yards) and Joshua Butler (6 receptions, 106 yards, touchdown) who are both getting plenty of burn early on as co-starters opposite of Scott Price on the outside. Shaw's been more consistent involved in the offense but Butler seems to have a little bit more juice which should be fun to watch as he gets more comfortable.

Along the offensive line, Nick Ryan has now started all three games and played the entirety of the last two. Sam Jefferson played a half in the Alabama and Oklahoma game but didn't play at all in the Stanford game as Jake Thompson got the start at right tackle and played the entire game. It might be too early to call it as USF has already spent Jefferson's redshirt so they'll likely try to get him into the mix at some point again.

The highest ranked defender, defensive end John Potts has been a rotational piece but has yet to register a stat. Safety Mike Mason made his impact felt right away with a pick six in his college debut and continues to flash with four tackles and two tackles for loss. They are the only freshmen defenders that have managed to crack the field on defense as that unit is simply loaded right now.

‣ USF using bye week to emotionally reset after tough whirlwind start to the season

Just three games into the season, USF has already played two top-2 ranked teams in Alabama and Stanford at the time and have won two nail biter games against the Tide and Oklahoma.

USF's schedule does loosen up as they play unranked UCF next, #18 Michigan at home and then a road trip to #12 Georgia before their next bye week. USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. told the media after the Stanford game that USF will have a few conditioning days during their bye this week but that they won't have a full practice until Friday and a freshmen scrimmage on Saturday before returning to their full workload on Sunday.

"Physically we're pretty good but that's a lot of emotional energy spent in a few weeks right out of camp," Francois Sr. also added, "It's a good time to reset, recharge and be ready for another sprint. We've got a couple of them this season and then the marathon to end the year."

After returning from their bye after the Georgia game, USF plays six games to end the season which includes three road trips to Purdue, BYU and Florida State with home stands against #16 Texas, #22 Oregon and #9 Michigan State to end the year.

UCF Knights lose a tough one at rival USF in 57-13 drubbing
If UCF safety Tom Campbell's 67-yard pick six was a glimmer of hope for the Knights, USF's Mark Cunningham and Carl Graham wasted no time drowning it out as the duo connected for a 78-yard touchdown pass on the next possession to get the rout back on track Saturday night as the Bulls rolled over their rivals 57-17.

Cunningham threw for 367 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Scott Price who finished the game with ten receptions for 139 yards. Graham was second on the team with 109 yards on four receptions.

Former USF quarterback Brandon Riley struggled in his return against his former team, at one point having more interception (4) than completions (3). Riley finished the game 17 of 36 for 161 yards with five interceptions. The Knights only touchdowns were the pick six and a 58-yard jet sweep by Howard Ryan.

USF OL coach Ryan Williams continues to rebuild offensive line with commitments from Luis Pearson, Kevin Brown
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF's offensive line was in rough shape -- number's wise -- last season and there was an intense focus on rebuilding that room, signing four offensive linemen last cycle. They've already nearing that number this season with offensive linemen Luis Pearson and Kevin Brown announcing their commitment to the Bulls over the weekend. Brown and Pearson join Brian Jackson as the third commitment along the offensive line and give the Bulls three of the nation's top interior linemen.

The Bulls beat out Georgia for Brown with Rutgers and BYU being the top contenders for Pearson.

The potential to eventually play tackle is there for Pearson who is listed at six-foot-five and 294 pounds. His technique is sound enough for him to survive on the outside at either side and with his physicality, it would be a natural transition to right tackle which is where USF traditionally play it's better run blockers. The only knock against Pearson is that he does sometimes struggles against speed rushes but overall, he's about as clean of a prospect as can be along the offensive line.

While Brown might not play with the same 'edge' as Pearson, they are similar prospects in terms of build and makeup. At this point in their development, Brown might be slightly more polished than both Pearson and Jackson but all three are pretty college ready in terms of technique and footwork. The Bulls have some positional versatility with both Brown and Pearson but probably ideally would like to keep Brown at guard with an interior offensive line that includes Nick Ryan, Jackson and Brown with Pearson and Sam Jefferson at tackle.

This could change as USF isn't done on the offensive line as they are still recruiting Texas offensive linemen Ed Foster and IMG Academy center Brett Pennington who are also four-star prospects. Landing Foster and Pennington would also allow USF to potentially consider playing Brown at offensive tackle as well. If USF is able to complete the sweep, they'd have landed five of the country's top fifteen interior prospects.

Bulls get another mass wave of commitments as five-star Dave Parker leads the charge
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF began the season with a wave of commitments as six players, including five-star receiver Ryan Murray, announced their pledge to USF during the team's Green and Gold Bash event during the beginning of fall camp. After their first big recruiting weekend of the regular season, USF had another surge of commitments, as seven players committed to the Bulls in five-star athlete Dave Parker, four-star cornerbacks Brandon Bryant and Anthony Sharp, four-star safety Shawn Franklin, four-star tight end Jake Bryant, four-star linebacker Oliver Colvin and four-star defensive end Seth Whitaker.

The second five-star of the class, Parker is an intriguing prospect with his positional versatility as he does a bit of everything for the Plant Panthers, leading the team in both rushing and receiving for the past two seasons. While Parker might not have singular elite trait, he is a well rounded player that's similar to Carl Graham coming out of high school. He was initially recruited as a receiver but the number situation at running back might place him there first as the Bulls are likely going to have only two scholarship running backs if Jacob Wheeler, as expected, declares for the draft.

Staying with the offense, Jake Bryant is one of the country's highest ranked tight ends and adds some much needed size and blocking ability to the tight end room. While Bryant isn't an explosive option by any means, he is a weapon with the ball in his hands with his physicality as his runner. The Bulls really want to reshape that tight end room and they're off to a good start with Bryant and are still heavily recruiting another top prospect as the position in Russell Arrington.

Joining Dante Avery and Brian Neal at defensive end is Miami's Seth Whitaker, who had sixteen sacks as a junior. The biggest question mark with Whitaker is his physicality against the run and can he ever be an every down player in the Champions Division. USF likely won't ever use him in that capacity as he's likely to be a situational pass rusher as part of USF's rotation at defensive end as they continue to stack talent at the position.

Oliver Colvin could find himself at defensive end as well as the four-star outside linebacker certainly has the size for it at six-foot-three and 232 pounds with a frame that could get into the 250-pound range. USF was able to beat out rival UCF for his commitment as Trai Martinez landed a major victory on the recruiting trail. Colvin is solid enough in coverage to stay as an outside linebacker and ideally, he'd play JACK or SAM as a stand-up edge rusher in the Bulls 3-4 scheme with the ability to drop back in coverage at times, similar to E.J. Young in the past.

Rounding out the commitments are defensive backs Brandon Bryant, Anthony Sharp and Shawn Franklin. The nation's top corner, Bryant was probably the top name on USF's board and is viewed internally as a five-star prospect. The Bulls think he can challenge their young crop of talented corners from day one and that his experience as a press man corner over the years sets him apart from recent top corners coming out of high school as well as his elite top end speed.

While Sharp isn't as college ready at Bryant, he is another talented prospect in his own right with his athleticism and the ability to play multiple positions at either outside corner, nickel or even safety. Sharp might have a similar career arc as current starting safety Anthony Gunn who was initially a corner coming out of high school but made the switch to safety.

Speaking of safeties, Franklin is very much in the mold of USF's recent signings at the position as he physically looks like a linebacker but moves very well for his size. The question with those big safeties are always their coverage skills and that's something that Franklin will need to continue to work on if he's going to be an every down player for USF. With how talented that room is, Franklin is probably a year or two away from playing much football but by then, if he develops as USF and the industry expects him to, he could be the next great USF safety.
