Nicholas commits to Maryland as recruiting dead period arrives
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Three-star linebacker Charles Nicholas has announced his commitment to Maryland, ending USF's recruitment and last ditch effort for the Hollywood, Florida linebacker.

USF also struck out on teammates Jeff Bell and Lamont Dickson, with both ending up at UCF. Despite beating the Knights, USF might end up losing yet another play to their rival as three-star tackle Darren Charles released a top two which included Florida State and UCF, kicking both USF and Florida out after taking to visits to both schools.

USF has started their igniting their backup plans with offers going out to three-star receiver Nathan Harris, as previously discussed, as well as three-star defensive end Matt Hayford and three-star receiver Alex Strong out of Miami Springs.

Hayford is a Georgia kid, a state that the Bulls have increased their presence in. There are seven Georgia players on the Bulls roster, signing three of them in the last cycle and already signing one Georgia high school recruit this cycle in four-star tight end Buck Burns. With the increased competition for kids in Florida, it would behoove the Bulls to established a presence in other states such as Georgia, Texas and California.

As Bulls prepare for GoDaddy.com Bowl Game vs. Toledo, USF tries to keep Francois
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

A year ago, USF was on the brink of scandal following reports of mistreatment of players by head coach Malcolm Francois. The Bulls ultimately decided to stick by their first-year head coach with five wins to his name and a seemingly impossible situation at quarterback.

Now, the Bulls will need to fight -- and likely pay -- to hang on to Francois. USF won a school record eleven games this past season and the program's first ever American Athletic Conference Championship. As the Bulls' match up with the Toledo Rockets (6-6, 6-3) gets closer, the intensity of Power 5 programs trying to poach one of the game's youngest head coaches grows. Francois is rumored to be a top candidate for potential openings in Wisconsin, Arkansas, Missouri and Wake Forest.

Francois has also been linked to the Hawai'i job and so has offensive coordinator Walt Wells. The school has began discussions for a multi-year extension with Francois to try to keep him.

"I'm focused on beating Toledo and winning twelve games," Francois said during media day, "That's a conversation I haven't even began to have with my family and those around me so to me, it's not even a discussion I can have with you guys because I haven't had it with them. I will say this, I did come here because this area, ultimately, is home. I love living here, I love recruiting kids to here, kids from here so I didn't go through last season just to sneak out the back door the next year but situations are fluids. Things change, dynamics change, we'll see."

The Rockets and their top ten ranked defense are a 1.5 point favorite.
