Bulls potentially wrap up recruiting class with commitment of Kelvin Davis
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

It's not even November and USF can put it's feet up and call it a day with recruiting potentially.

Defensive end prospect Kelvin Davis out of Coral Springs, Florida committed to the South Florida Bulls on Tuesday. Davis, who transferred to Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale for his senior season, is a three-star recruit with prototypical size for the position. At six-foot-five and 255 pounds, Davis certainly looks the part and has the physical tools to develop into a rotational defensive end for the Bulls.

He lacks the elite athleticism that USF typically wants in it's defensive ends so a switch to defensive tackle isn't out of the picture but given the need for depth at the position, Davis will get plenty of opportunities to crack that rotation. There are currently just five scholarship defensive ends on the roster with Ben Jennings, a converted defensive end, set to graduate and Chuck Sanders potentially declaring for the draft as a junior. If Sanders does leave, that would USF with just three scholarship defensive ends.

USF has fourteen commits in their currently top ranked recruiting class although that ranking might slide. USF entered the recruiting cycle with eleven guaranteed roster spots. Given that USF has a few draft eligible players that might declare such as CB Marcus Hines, QB Michael Harrell, C Jamie Babcock, LB Scott Stewart and HB James Thomas, USF had a little bit of wiggle room but they might have approached it.

Should a spot open up due to a transfer, a player to keep an eye on is defensive end Travis Scott out of the Boca Raton area in south Florida. The four-star defensive end has interest from Virginia Tech, Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State.

I think the 2016 one is still atop with Franklin Sapp, Zac White, Dan Johnson and Shelton Richardson. All four of those guys in any of the other classes are the top guys. I think the last class we just signed can challenge that if McFarland, the QB, ends up being good. I don't see a lot of "star" talent in the current class for this cycle but really no way to know since one of my house rules is no scouting.

USF DE Hawkins' injury first real hiccup, challenge for Bulls defense
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The University of South Florida got some bad news on Sunday morning. Redshirt junior defensive end Mark Hawkins tore his quad in the team's win over Baylor and will most likely miss the rest of the season.

Hawkins, a career backup for most of his tenure at USF, was named last week as a semi-finalist for the Bednarik, Nagurski and Lombardi award. He's second on the team with eight sacks on the season along with his 26 tackles and 13 tackles for loss after coming into the year with 4 career tackles.

The injury to Hawkins came in the same game that junior Chuck Sanders broke the school record for career sacks with his 30th, 31st, 32nd and 33rd sack in a four-sack performance, also tying another school record for most sacks in a single game. The Bulls will need Sanders to keep that level of production as well as elevated play from four-year starter defensive tackle E.J. Newsome who has a career high six sacks on the year.

Hawkins' backup this season has been a converted defensive tackle in Ben Jennings. Jennings tips the scale at 301 pounds but is athletic enough to play on the edge with USF deploying him mainly on short yardage situations. He has three sacks on the year after recording just one tackle in his previous four seasons in Tampa.

Another name to watch is John Mansfield, a redshirt sophomore who had a sack last week and true freshman Dale Bolen. USF typically runs a three-man rotation at defensive end, spelling Sanders and Hawkins as often as possible to keep them fresh.
