Recruiting Class in Review: Bulls bounced back from less-than-stellar 2017 recruiting class with a strong one in 2018
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
The 2016 recruiting class was one to remember and the 2017 recruiting class was one to forget. The 2018 recruiting class? Somewhere in the middle.
With everyone in that class heading into either their senior or redshirt junior season, let's revisit that class and grade it out. The grading criteria is as follows: 1 star for non-contributor, 2 star for depth player, 3 star for contributor, 4 star for impact starter, 5 star for a star player.
2016 USF Bulls Recruiting Class
ATH Trey Davis [ATH #7]: 6'1", 186lbs | Midland, TX | 5-star
Career Stats » 124 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 5 interceptions, defensive touchdown, 10 pass deflections, 22 carries, 130 yards, touchdown, 8 receptions, 100 yards, 2 touchdowns.
Analysis » Davis was a big time get at the time but certain people had an issue with USF going after a player with a troubled past. The gambled worked as following a rocky freshman season, Davis ended up being a very productive member of USF's defense and secondary. The counting stats weren't always there but in terms of impact, Davis lived up to the hype.
Grade » 5-star
DT E.J. Newsome [DT #6]: 6'3", 265lbs | Fultondale, AL | 4-star
Career Stats » 59 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 17 sacks.
Analysis » A rare four-year starter on the defensive line, Newsome has been a constant presence on USF's defense and with a strong senior season that sees him approaching a 10-sack campaign, Newsome's grade has improved to five-stars.
Grade » 5-star
S Chip Bryant [S #3]: 5'11", 180lbs | Boynton Beach, FL | 4-star
Career Stats » 172 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 5 interceptions, 12 pass deflections.
Analysis » Great against the run, Bryant was able to get on the field as a freshman and never looked back, starting his last two seasons alongside Davis on the backend of some elite USF defenses.
Grade » 5-star
WR Mike Holmes [WR #18]: 6'0", 183lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star
Career Stats » 111 receptions, 1676 yards, 11 touchdowns.
Analysis » The first question mark of the class, Holmes came in with a lot of hype and donned the #4 jersey as a sophomore due to the comparisons to Franklin Sapp. Holmes was never able to get it going with QB Michael Harrell once David Johnson left and had a subpar junior season before declaring early, only to go undrafted. His production as a sophomore, however, does grant him that fourth star.
Grade » 4-star
WR Joel Green [WR #37]: 6'1", 196lbs | Belle Glade, FL | 4-star
Career Stats » 7 receptions, 55 yards.
Analysis » It's easy to forget Green was once a highly coveted recruit. He's never been able to get onto the field and quite frankly, when he has, he's been forgettable. The first bust of this class.
Grade » 2-star
ATH Victor Tucker [ATH #35]: 6'3", 264lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star
Career Stats » 48 pancakes, 10 sacks given up.
Analysis » Tucker came in as a two-way player before the strength staff bulked him and he started at guard as a true freshman. He had some issues, particularly due to his lack of strength, and got moved to the outside and left tackle and is having a great senior season with just one sack allowed.
Grade » 4-star
WR Marco Mason [WR #42]: 6'2", 221lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star
Career Stats » 102 receptions, 1329 yards, 9 touchdowns.
Analysis » The offense the last two seasons hasn't been WR friendly but Mason was able to have a bit of a run back in 2019. His role decreased in 2020 due the offense being run first, run second and pass....maybe fourth. He has just 25 catches this season as well but that's because William Stone has overtaken the WR1 role with Andrew Vincent being WR2 at times and now Benji Bright has started to get going. Talent was never an issue for Mason, it just never was the perfect fit for him to be able to have the counting numbers.
Grade » 3-star
WR Scott Kimbrough [WR #48]: 6'0", 202lbs | Red Bank, SC | 4-star
Career Stats » 5 carries, 14 yards.
Analysis » Kimbrough moved to running back after redshirting his freshman season and just never got it going as he was stuck behind a stable of talented guys.
Grade » 1-star
G Jamie Babcock [G #10]: 6'4", 324lbs | Port St. Lucie, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 31 pancakes, 2 sacks given up.
Analysis » If Babcock returns for his redshirt senior season, he has the shot at being one of the best offensive linemen to ever play at South Florida. A two-year starter at center, he's surrendered just two sacks in his career and has yet to allow a sack this season.
Grade » 4-star
DE Mark Hawkins [DE #36]: 6'2", 245lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 30 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 8 sacks.
Analysis » In just one season, Hawkins went from being a bust to a highly productive player as he is on several awards watchlist. An injury cut his season short but with another year of eligibility left, Hawkins' stock is on the rise.
Grade » 4-star
G Maurice Williams [G #24]: 6'1", 291lbs | Tampa, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 2 pancakes.
Analysis » A career backup, Williams will get his chance at starting next season when Nic Haynes graduates and the left guard spot is open.
Grade » 2-star
OLB Ryan Fletcher [OLB #31]: 6'2", 232lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 7 tackles, tackle for loss.
Analysis » Fletcher has mostly been a special teams guy with a few spot duties here and there as part of the rotation at linebacker. He'll get a chance to start next season when John Jacobs graduates.
Grade » 2-star
TE Joe Wayne [TE #28]: 6'4", 252lbs | Brownsville, TX | 3-star
Career Stats » 16 receptions, 106 yards, 2 touchdowns, 20 pancakes, 1 sack given up.
Analysis » Primarily a blocking tight end, Wayne should be judged as a fullback/extra offensive linemen than as a traditional tight end. It's hard to call a situational blocker an impact player to Wayne gets three-stars but he's a high 3-star.
Grade » 3-star
HB Greg Johnston [HB #61]: 6'0", 198lbs | Winter Park, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 86 carries, 350 yards, 8 touchdowns, 19 receptions, 134 yards, touchdown, 34 kick returns, 1211 yards, 4 touchdowns, 2 punt returns, 121 yards, touchdown.
Analysis » Similar to Wayne, Johnston is a specialist for the Bulls. He got on the field as a redshirt freshman with 241 rushing yards but since then, just 26 carries in two seasons. Instead, he's found his calling as a returner with five touchdowns in that department and is averaging 35.6 yards per return as a kick returner and 60.2 as a punt returner.
Grade » 3-star
DT Justin Barry [DT #40]: 6'4", 259lbs | Homestead, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 1 tackle, 1 tackle for loss.
Analysis » Barry hasn't been able to crack the two-deep during his tenure but with Newsome graduating, could start next season as a redshirt senior.
Grade » 1-star
OLB Matt Stewart [OLB #57]: 6'1", 239lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » No stats.
Analysis » Stewart just never got on the field for the Bulls and likely won't next season either.
Grade » 1-star
CB Michael Walker [CB #64]: 5'11", 203lbs | Spartanburg, SC | 3-star
Career Stats » 17 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions.
Analysis » A strong senior season has salvaged what was an uneventful four years for Walker. He's the team's dime back and has been productive, enough to earn him a third star.
Grade » 3-star
S Aaron Graham [S #43]: 6'3", 191lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » No stats.
Analysis » Never played for the Bulls.
Grade » 1-star
Superlative Awards
Most Important Signing: Landing Davis would help set the tone for USF's entrance into the state of Texas, where they've found some success.
Most Productive Signing: It's a three-way tie between Trey Davis, Chip Bryant and E.J. Newsome. David had the more flashy plays, Bryant was a reliable presence while Newsome has an extra year of production to plead his case.
Biggest Bust of the Class: While a lot of the second half of the class was unproductive, Scott Kimbrough holds the crown as he was a four-star.
Most Untapped Potential: Seeing what William Stone is doing in this offense makes you wonder what Holmes could have been with an extra year.
Biggest Steal of the Class: Turning Jamie Babcock, a three-star recruit that almost went to UCF, into a now two-year starter that could be a draft pick has been quite the turn around.
Biggest Lost of the Class: Miami was able to leap frog early favorites Cal and USF to land five-star offensive tackle Alex Parham, who committed during his visit to Miami. Parham ended up declaring for the draft last season and would have been a great player for the Bulls as well. It ended up working out with Tucker but imagine an offensive line class of Babcock, Tucker and Parham.
