Run of the Bulls ‣ USF Football News
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer

‣ Youth movement continues on offensive line as Dixon expected to make start at Ohio State

After a half of football, USF replaced then starting left guard redshirt senior Maurice Williams with a sophomore in Brad Jones. History has seemingly repeated itself, this time at center.

Starting center Bryan McBride was benched at halftime of the Oklahoma game in favor of redshirt freshman Joel Dixon. McBride posted a 9.4 PFF grade in just one half of football while Dixon was considerably better with 80.0.

While the coaching staff did not announce a starter, it seems clear now that the youth movement will continue on the offensive line.

‣ Bulls to launch digital media network, Bulls Network, in 2023

The University of South Florida is one of a very few programs that not only features an elite football program but is also in a major city in a big media market as Tampa is the 12th ranked media market in the United States according to Nielsen.

The Bulls are starting to take advantage of that as they push to become a national brand.

On Monday, the school announced the launching of Bulls Network, which will be their digital media platform available on YouTube and Apple TV. In the announcement, they mentioned original program offerings as well as behind the scenes look at the USF athletic department with it's football program front and center. What those original programs will be, however, is still unknown.

USF does not own the broadcasting rights to it's in-conference games which are the real money makers and while it will likely pale in comparison to other networks such as the Longhorn Network, it's a step in the right direction. The digital only platform also allows the school to have more flexibility in terms of content offering as opposed to partnering with a network given the Big 12's deal with FOX.

‣ Five-star RB Fuller and Green interested in potential pairing at next level

With the value of running backs continuing to decrease at the NFL level, a pro prospect that has as little thread on their tires is becoming more and more attractive. This fact is not lost on either of the two five-star running backs that USF is going after, just a cycle removed from landing a five-star in Gerald Mitchell.

"I think it'd be fun," said David Fuller of joining the Bulls, a five-star running back out of Georgia that recently received an offer from Georgia. Fuller, who has been committed to Middle Tennessee State since he was a freshman, has openly flirted with other schools following his rise in the rankings. He has offers from USF, Ohio State, Alabama and the likes.

"They do a good job of using a bunch of different players and they keep you fresh and let you showcase your talent," Fuller added, "I'd love to play with Derrick [Green]."

Green, a fellow five-star running back out of the state of Louisiana had similar praises for Derrick, "I think it'd be interesting, they've done some pretty good things and know how to spread the ball around and he's a great player and you always want to play with great players."

Run of the Bulls ‣ USF Football News
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer

‣ McFarland using bye week to get healthy, eyeing return following home stretch

While the differences between James Pittman and Mike McFarland were so minute that it took the coaching staff an entire offseason to determine a starter, Bulls fans can't help but wonder if Saturday's loss to Ohio State would have gone differently with the more accurate McFarland at quarterback.

McFarland is still recovering from tearing his abdomen in the opener and with the Bulls on a bye this week, it's just an extra week for them to try to get their quarterback back. McFarland hasn't been made available to the media and head coach Malcolm Francois has refused to comment on his injury timeline.

However, McFarland did appear to be back with the team this week, participating in a limited capacity based on his social media posts. Without full details on the injury, it's tough to determine when he'll be back but a generic timetable would put his return somewhere in the next month, potentially before the team's road trip to Texas Christian.

‣ Henry not distracted by Heisman odds

According to William-Hill Sportsbook, USF running back Troy Henry has the second best odds in the nation to win the Heisman.

On the season, Henry is averaging 156.5 yards per game on the ground along with five touchdowns. He also has 102 yards after contact after having just 175 his entire freshman season and 202 as a sophomore. He also is averaging 33.5 yards per game as a pass catcher and has a touchdown receiving as well. He's very good at football.

"It's cool," said a smiling Henry at practice on Wednesday, "I don't really know what to do with that information. I'd love to win it, obviously, means we're also winning. I have my eyes set on bigger things and in order to do those things, you have to do the small things first so that's getting some rest this week and getting ready for UCLA."

‣ Francois preaching patience to receivers

Malcolm Francois might be one of the top head coaches in the country with a lot on his plate but at the end of the day, he's always going to have an eye on the wide receiver group as a former receiver himself.

USF's top pass catcher has been running back Troy Henry with sixteen catches and in second place, true freshman Joel Bass with fourteen. William Stone is third with eleven and Andrew Vincent has 10. Nobody else on the team has more than ten, part of the reason why only Iowa State has a worst passing attack in the Big 12.

"We have to stay patient," said Francois, who also serves as the team's WR coach and primary recruiter at the position, "We're not where we want to be in the passing game right now and everyone knows that but you can't just decide to throw it fifty times a game and just start chucking it down the field. Do we want it to be more efficient? Yes but in terms of volume, I think this is the sort of offense we're looking to run."

It'll be interesting to see if the post-Marcel Smith era of USF offenses continues to attract top end receivers. Under Smith, USF constantly had one of the better passing attacks with Zac White and Franklin Sapp with Grant Oliver and David Johnson at QB. Those offenses certainly help USF land a few talented receivers, including three five-stars on the roster right now in Bass, Stone and Vincent.
