Run of the Bulls ‣ 247 Sports ‣ November 10th, 2021
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer

‣ USF WR Vincent to miss next few weeks with back injury

For the second week in a row, USF left a game with an injury to a key player, this time being true freshman receiver Andrew Vincent. Vincent injured his back against TCU and was not at practice for the past few days.

According to reports, Vincent strained his back and is expected to be out for a few weeks. The Bulls play West Virginia this week before hosting Texas and Central Florida in their last two games, arguably the most important stretch of the season. At this time, the team does not expect Vincent to be fully inserted back into the starting lineup during the regular season and are instead hoping to have him ready for the conference championship game, if they make it.

After being held catch-less in the previous two games, Vincent appeared to be getting more involved in the passing game with two touchdowns against TCU. On the season, he has 32 catches for 394 yards and five touchdowns, all the second most on the team behind fellow true freshman William Stone.

‣ It's lit! Four-star DE Scott to be on campus for game vs. Texas

The injury to defensive end Mark Hawkins highlighted just how little depth USF has at defensive end and with both Hawkins and Sanders being potential early departures, the position is in need of retooling.

The Bulls have one in the chamber in three-star DE Kelvin Davis committed to USF but they're trying to double up at the position, hosting four-star defensive end Travis Scott out of Boca Raton, Florida next week. It appears to be a USF and Virginia Tech battle for the six-foot-two, 260 pound defensive end.

‣ Five USF players named finalist for Bednarik

If you are a gambling man, you should probably put some money -- if you can -- on a USF Bull winning the Bednarik Award. Five different USF players were named as semi-finalists for the award including LB Scott Stewart, DE Chuck Sanders, S Edgar Thompson, LB Stephen Hill and DE Mark Hawkins.

Sanders, Hawkins, Thompson and Stewart were also named semi-finalists for the Nagurski. Sanders, Hawkins and DT E.J. Newsome were also named semi-finalists for the Lombardi while Stewart and Hill made the cut for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker.

The Thorpe Award, given to the nation's top defensive back, also listed Thompson and fellow USF defensive backs Jason Garcia, Ben Lewis and Sam Peterson as semi-finalists.

All in all, just two defensive starters in freshman DT Jeremi Daniels and junior CB Marcus Hines did not make the cut for at least one semi-finalist list.

Offensively, selections were more sparse with true freshman WR William Stone making the list for the Biletnikoff and center Jamie Babcock doing so for the Rimington.

Run of the Bulls ‣ November 18th, 2021 Podcast Recap
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer

‣ Harrell practicing this week without elbow brace for first time since injury

Ever since injuring his elbow early in the season, USF quarterback Michael Harrell has worn a noticeable, bulky brace on his left elbow during practices and during games. For the first time in months, Harrell was seen without it during the public part of USF's practice on Monday and Tuesday. According to someone within the program, the brace was a cautionary method and Harrell is expected to play without it this week against Texas, the only team Harrell's ever lost to as a starter.

Harrell has tried to be more cautious this season, sliding more than in previous seasons along with the aforementioned brace. The coaching staff has protected him more with just 95 carries on the season compared to the 106 as a freshman in nine games and the 169 as a sophomore.

USF and Harrell will look to extend their 15 game home winning streak.

‣ Bulls are #1 for first time in program history

South Florida has reached #2 a few times in the BCS rankings, once back in 2007 when head coach Malcolm Francois was an assistant and twice under Francois as a head coach, including during their national championship game appearance. They've never landed the coveted #1 spot until this week.

With Ohio State losing, South Florida jumped up to #1 in the BCS rankings with former AAC conference mate SMU in second, Texas A&M third and Oklahoma fourth.

The Sooners have clinched a trip to the Big 12 Championship Game and so can USF with a win vs. Texas. If both teams win out, the Big 12 Championship Game could easily be a battle between the top two teams in the country as SMU still has to play a 7-2 Tulsa team and #14 Navy while A&M travels into Tuscaloosa this week.

‣ Longhorns to be without starting QB Williams due to injury

Texas starting QB Doug Williams will not play this week against South Florida as he continues to recover from a toe injury that he suffered against UCF before being replaced by redshirt junior Jeff Willis.

Williams, a redshirt junior, threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for two more in Texas' 49-48 win over USF last season. On the season, Williams is averaging 209.4 yards per game and 26 touchdowns to just four interceptions in addition to 574 rushing yards.

In his first start, Wills threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns in the 49-21 win over Baylor but the start of the game was Andrew Washington. Washington rushed for 288 yards and five touchdowns.

Washington had 1,341 yards on the season, averaging a whopping 7.1 yards per carry as incumbent starter Brandon Scott has missed most of the season with an injury. Scott last season rushed for 1,300 yards and eighteen touchdowns with Texas not ruling him out yet for this game.
