Bulls lower the boom, take LSU Tigers to the woodshed
LSU tried to do what USF has done to teams for the past years or so. Run the football, be physical, dominate time of possession and suck the air out of a game. The Tigers did it to perfection on their first two drives except when it came to finishing as they had to settle for a field goal and then a punt.

Meanwhile, USF's offense had no problem picking up chunk yards through the air and on the ground, jumping out to an early lead that the Tigers simply didn't have the firepower to over come as the Bulls won their home opener easily 49-9.

Todd Woods shut down any notion of a quarterback competition, completing all 20 of his passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. The more impressive part was that he didn't play in the second half as redshirt freshman Thomas Jackson finished the game, throwing an interception on his first pass before settling down and having a productive game as well, completing his next five passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Both Woods and Jackson benefited from short screens that went for touchdowns. Roger Shaw Jr. and Anthony Montgomery each had a receiving touchdown as well as a rushing touchdown with Montgomery having two. Shaw rushed for 114 yards before sitting down for the fourth quarter while Montgomery rushed for 83 yards, finishing the game.

USF OL Brown, DB Daniel expected to be available against Florida
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

USF offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr. spoke to the media on Tuesday and revealed that starting right guard Ben Brown who missed most of last Saturday's game with 'concussion like symptoms' has been cleared and is expected to start this week.

Brown was replaced by junior Justin West who played one of his best games at USF after struggling as a true freshman at right tackle. Francois Jr. intimated that West could continue to see some playing time this week as part of the rotation on the offensive line. So far this season, the starting five of Michael Bowser, Lamar Felder, Cedric George, Brown and Kyle Parker had played every snap together prior to Brown's injury.

Francois Jr. also revealed that quarterback Thomas Jackson suffered an undisclosed injury and won't be available for the "next couple of weeks". The Bulls offensive coordinator announced that Brandon Wilson will serve as the team's backup quarterback against Florida and that the plan, similar to with Jackson in the first two weeks, is to get Wilson some snaps.

"We're still evaluating the roster," said Francois Jr, "When we get a chance to play some of the younger guys, we're going to play them. It's not unique to quarterback or any position, we just feel strongly as a staff that its all about development and those ten, twelve snaps can have a great impact on finding out what you have and giving them a chance to show you something and get better."

USF defensive coordinator Bob Shoop also spoke to the media and was very complimentary of all three true freshman defensive backs that played extensively on Saturday in Zach Mack, Clayton Bradford and Richie Cowan. Mack and Bradford playing time was extended against LSU after senior David Daniel left the game with an injury. Shoop confirmed that Daniel practiced on Monday and will be back against Florida.

Cowan also saw his first piece of major action last week as starting nickel back Adam Kelly appeared to have been bench following the drop of a would be interception that very well would have resulted in a pick-six. While Cowan did allow a completion on that same drive for a first down on third down, he forced a fumble in the fourth quarter and was physical against the run despite being listed at 169 pounds.

USF will be hosting several top recruits this weekend for official visits including Tampa Tech star running back Jason Gibson.

The four-star prospect will be joined by four-star center Brandon Franklin, four-star defensive end John Allen and three-star offensive guard Dave Riley. Gibson is expected to visit Miami, Florida State and Florida later this season but the Bulls are confident they can land a commitment from him this weekend.

They already have commitments from Gibson's teammates at Tampa Tech in linebackers Chris Williams and Stephen Dixon. Gibson's quarterback is Jesse King where Miami has emerged as the leader in his recruitment. The Bulls have shifted their focus at quarterback towards IMG Academy's Jeff Jones, a decision that Gibson has maintained won't affect his recruitment.

"We're all going to make our decision," Gibson said back in the summer when Williams and Dixon committed to USF, "We talk, obviously, but at the end of the day, everybody has to make the right decision for them."
