The Postmortem: A rare four-loss season has USF fans looking for answers
Jonathan Bright -- BullsNation.com Football Reporter

Alabama's decision to hire former UCF head coach Jonathan Henry has been a great one with Henry winning a national championship in his second season and has now beaten the Bulls twice within a calendar year in his third season, putting an end to the Crimson Tide's struggles against USF.

Henry is making a solid argument to be the newly crowned best head coach in the country with an 11-0 record against rivals, 5-2 in the playoffs and bowl games with an impressive 22-10 record against the top 25 in his first three seasons at Alabama.

The crown has long belonged to USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. who suffered just his sixth season with more than three losses and just the program's second season with less than ten wins in the past thirteen seasons.

The Bulls were competitive in all four losses which is encouraging abut after the disappointing end to last year's season with a blowout loss to Michigan, USF fans were hopeful for something a little bit more than a consolation prize and a participation trophy.

It promises to be an important offseason with long time defensive coordinator Trai Martinez once again contemplating retirement and USF potentially losing their two co-offensive coordinators with quarterback coach Jeremy Butler and receiver's coach Malcolm Francois Jr. receiving head coaching buzz and a bevy of key players on both sides of the ball set to graduate and/or enter the NFL Draft, including quarterback Rashad Woodard.

The saving grace? Even at 64 years old, there still may not be a better head coach in college football than Francois Sr. who is uniquely equipped to re-load the roster and the coaching staff -- if need be -- and make another run at another national championship.

USF receiver's coach Malcolm Francois Jr. to interview for FAU head coaching job
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

Florida Atlantic University is scheduled to conduct a string of interviews to replace head coach Jesse Minter and at the top of that list is USF co-OC and receiver's coach Malcolm Francois Jr.

Francois Jr. returned to the state of Florida last year after resigning from his position as offensive coordinator at Navy where he spent several seasons with the Midshipmen following his firing as Kentucky's head coach.

The son of USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr, Francois has already interviewed with Oregon State, North Texas and Iowa for their respective head coaching jobs as he continues to be a hot name on the trail.

USF expects to retain co-offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach Jeremy Butler as he has yet to take a formal interview.

Former USF tight end Taylor Smith goes back home, transfers to Clemson as graduate transfer
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF redshirt junior tight end Taylor Smith has announced his transfer to Clemson University as a graduate transfer.

Smith, who is from Barnwell, South Carolina, was a four-star prospect coming out of high school having played his last two seasons at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Smith was a team captain this past season as a fourth-year junior and caught 24 passes as a sophomore for 217 yards,

With the arrival of Jake Bryant and Russell Arrington, Smith saw a lesser role as a pass catcher and finished the year with just ten receptions for 78 yards. He projects to see a larger role in Clemson's offense as he returns home to South Carolina.

Scott Price, Ernest Jones and Clarence Sullivan announce decision to forego senior season for the NFL Draft
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF junior Ernest Jones is among the three USF juniors to declare early for the draft, joining receiver Scott Price and safety Clarence Sullivan.

Jones led the team with four interceptions this past season and is projected to be a potential first round pick in this spring's draft as are Price and Sullivan with Sullivan finishing second on the team in tackles despite missing several games with a suspension.

The Bulls are also losing two more players to the transfer portals in freshmen quarterback Shawn Williams and center Ed Foster transferring to Georgia State and Texas respectively. Neither played this past season with Foster returning to his home state of Texas.

It's not all departures for the Bulls as junior quarterback Rashad Woodard has committed to returning for his senior season after meeting with advisors for the past week to decide on his next decision.

Bulls remain in contention for rising prospect Mark Collier despite coaching staff changes
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

North Shore (Houston, TX) star receiver Mark Collier says he's been in constant contact with new USF receiver coach Mike Holmes and that he will be picking between USF and Toledo on National Signing Day.

Collier was being recruited previously by Malcolm Francois Jr. who took the head coaching job at Oregon State last month with many wondering if Collier would potentially follow Francois Jr. to Corvallis or perhaps recommitting to Toledo, the first school to offer him as a sophomore at Brazoswood High School in Clute, Texas.

The Rockets are offering Collier the opportunity to be a two-way player for them and the chance to play early while at USF, Collier has been recruited as a receiver and knows that the path to the playing field will be a long and tough one marred with competition all over.

"They offer different things," Collier said of his decision, "I like both schools, both programs and I can see myself going to either one. They're different but they're all exciting opportunities and I'm just going to take these last few days to decide and then go from there."

USF already has the nation's top class and would further their lead with a commitment from the four-star athlete.

Spring Confidential: Assessing USF's offense heading into spring practices
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

As National Signing Day approaches, USF already has the bulk of next year's roster on campus with the majority of the recruiting class enrolling early and the Bulls not expecting to take any additional transfers this season.

With spring football roughly a month away, it's as good of a time as any to get an inside look at how USF's roster is shaping up to be.

Quarterback
Returning: Rashard Woodard (Sr), Chris Price, (Rs-So), Justin Ingram (Rs-So)
Additions: 4-star Kevin Meadows (early enrollee)
Losses: Shawn Williams (transfer)

Getting Woodard to return for his senior season was a major win for the Bulls as when healthy, he's one of the better quarterbacks in the Champions Division and could be a dark horse for the Heisman if he's able to put it altogether this season.

USF is also adding a potential future star in freshman Kevin Meadows who will likely compete for that backup role with Chris Price and Justin Ingram.

Running Back
Returning: Justin Thomas (Jr), Dave Parker (So), Cameron Stokes (So), Earl May (Sr)
Additions: 4-star Brian Clay (early enrollee)
Losses: Victor King (graduation)

After a couple of thin years in terms of depth, USF finally has a talented and deep running back room led by five-stars Justin Thomas and Dave Parker who figure to be the lead horses next season.

Cameron Stokes provides some versatility out of the backfield along with true freshman Brian Clay who is a similar player to Thomas coming out of high school and should provide some explosiveness off the bench as a freshman.

Wide Receiver
Returning: Eddie Shaw (Jr), Joshua Butler (Jr), Andre Morgan (Sr), Nick Weiss (Sr), Ryan Murray (So)
Additions: 5-star Donald Jones (early enrollee), 4-star Will Madison (summer arrival), 4-star Theo Smith (early enrollee)
Losses: Scott Price (draft)

Replacing Scott Price is going to be difficult but it does open the door for five-star receiver Donald Jones to have an impact as a freshman as he'll compete for one of the outside receiver slots along with Joshua Butler and Andre Morgan who are all talented receivers in their own right.

In the slot, it'll be Ryan Murray and Eddie Shaw, who finished second on the team in receptions last year with Theo Smith as the backup. Murray's freshman season was hampered by injuries so if he's able to put it behind him, he could emerge as one of USF's top receivers by season's end.

The Bulls will need to wait until the summer to see the speedster Will Madison in person which limits his chances to get on the field as a true freshman but he could see some special teams action.

Tight End
Returning: Jake Bryant (So), Russell Arrington (So)
Additions: 4-star Matt Jordan (early enrollee), 3-star Gemara McDonald (early enrollee)
Losses: Taylor Smith (transfer)

Jake Bryant took over as a starter by the end of last season, which led to Taylor Smith entering the transfer portal and ending up at Clemson. Bryant and Jake Arrington are more than capable of being the Bulls' top tight ends and get some added depth in freshmen Matt Jordan and McDonald who all have impressive physical qualities to make them potential starters down the line as well.

Offensive Line
Returning: G Nick Ryan (Jr), T Sam Jefferson (Jr), G Tim Richardson (Jr), G Josh Henry (Rs-So), T Kyle Wilson (Rs-So), T Kevin Brown (So), G Brian Jackson (So), T Luis Pearson (So), C Brett Pennington (Rs-Fr)
Additions: 4-star T Tim Hill, 4-star G Mike Miller, 3-star C Brian Daniel (all early enrolees)
Losses: T Steve Bailey (draft), C Kyle Jones (draft), C Ed Foster (transfer)

USF will need to rebuild key pieces of the offensive line with left tackle Steve Bailey and center Kyles Jones heading to the NFL, arguably the two most important positions.

At left tackle, Kevin Brown figures to slide right in after starting several games at right tackle this past season as a true freshman, leaving the right side open for either Sam Jefferson, Luis Pearson or Brian Jackson to start at right guard and right tackle as all three are capable of playing either guard or the tackle spot.

The water is more murky at center where Ed Foster was viewed as the center of the future prior to his transfer to Texas. This likely keeps Brian Daniel at center after some discussion about whether he's a tight end at the next level. He'll compete with Brett Pennington for that starting spot and they could always move Nick Ryan back to center, which was his position coming out of high school.
