English tabbed as defensive coordinator for the USF Bulls
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF head coach Malcolm Francois announced on Monday that former Colorado State defensive coordinator Marty English has been hired as the team's defensive coordinator.

English will try to turn around a defense that allowed the fourth most points in college football and convert them from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 defense.

A Colorado product, English had spent the previous nine seasons at Wyoming (2003-11) before spending the last three seasons at Colorado State before he was fired last winter. He had served as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, linebackers and special teams coach from 2009-11. The senior member of the Wyoming staff when he joined the Rams, he spent his first six years (2003-08) in Laramie as Joe Glenn’s linebackers coach.

English helped the Cowboys to two bowl appearances in his three seasons at the reins of the defense, including 2011, when Wyoming led the Mountain West and tied for 10th in the nation with 31 takeaways.

Eveld, Shaw show support towards Francois ahead of their exit
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF quarterback Bobby Eveld was a main piece of the story regarding the alleged verbal abuse that USF head coach Malcolm Francois bestowed upon his players. Eveld, one of fifteen graduating USF players, seemed to have a different recollection of what happened.

"Coach [Francois] is one of the best coaches I've gotten a chance to play with," said Eveld in a tweet, "No matter what, I knew he had his skin in the game and we came to have a lot of mutual respect for each other. He's got a fan and supporter in me."

Eveld's tweet was re-tweeted by several players, including graduating senior Marcus Shaw. USF will need to replace Shaw's production in 2014.

Bulls land Georgia transfer DB Wilkerson as signing day approaches
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

University of Georgia freshman defensive back Reggie Wilkerson has announced that he will be transferring to USF.

A Florida kid, Wilkerson will likely have to sit out the 2014 season but when he returns in 2015, he will give the Bulls a very talented defensive backfield and provides some flexibility as he can play both play corner or move out to safety.

Wilkerson's addition does count as a counter against USF's 2014 roster count. With their list of already early-enrollee from the 2014 recruiting class being already at 17, USF is theoretically out of space. They also aren't as needy as they once were so losing out on three-star cornerback Antwan Shaw to Florida Atlantic is now a loss that USF might be able to swallow.

Nevertheless, USF is still expected to make a last minute visit to Shaw although at this point, he appears to be a lock to the Owls.

USF make splash on National Signing Day to pull off upset and keep CB Shaw
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The stage was set for a boring National Signing Day for the USF Bulls. The majority of the recruiting class was already on campus and the only player left on the Bulls board, Antwan Shaw, was considered a lock to Florida Atlantic.

USF was able to flip Shaw back to the Bulls and pull in the nation's 49th best recruiting class. It was the second highest ranked recruiting class in the American Athletic Conference and only UL Monroe and Navy finished with a higher ranked recruiting class for a Non-Power 5 school.

Bulls fans did watch a former USF commit in four-star defensive end Sheldon Corbett commit to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to put an end to his recruitment. WR Tyrone Gibbons also ended up in Ole Miss.

Floyd, Saffold among camp highlights as Bulls get ready for 2014 season
Greg Flowers -- The Daily Stampede

USF head coach Malcolm Francois has said throughout the off-season that heading into the 2014 season, the slate is clean for the entire quarterback room. No evidence of that is stronger than Matt Floyd's performance and earning snaps with the first team offense.

Floyd started two games in 2012 in Skip Holtz' last season and was a forgotten player in 2013, not playing a single snap but appears to be in a two-man race along with quarterback Steven Bench. Bench and Floyd continue to split the first team reps followed by freshman quarterback Grant Oliver who appears to be not as far along in the development process as USF had hoped.

Another forgotten player that has turned heads is running back Torrell Saffold, who was buried on the depth chart last season at corner. Francois flipped Saffold over to offense and he's been the team's most explosive back. Michael Pierre figures to be the workhorse but Saffold's production might surprise some people.

Some other quick hits:

-- The defense is adjusting to the new 3-4 defensive front. Defensive tackles Todd Chandler and Elkino Watson are now starting on the defensive line at defensive end with James Hamilton at nose guard, all over 300 pounds. Aaron Lynch is adjusting nicely to the 'Buck' linebacker role as a stand-up pass rusher.

-- Going back to quarterback, Steven Bench looks like a different guy and has been tearing it up with receivers Andre Davis and Deonte Welch. It's his job to lose.

-- Secondary should be improved in 2014. Lamar Robins and Kenneth Durden are a year older at cornerback and Jalen Spencer started three games last season at safety and showed flashes.

-- Final note on quarterbacks, sophomore QB Mike White has left the program to pursue a career in baseball. 2014 signee three-star DT Dennis Martin failed to qualify academically and isn't expected to be part of the 2014 team.

USF releases two-deep depth chart as official 2014 schedule is announced
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF head coach Malcolm Francois has named junior quarterback Steven Bench the starter ahead of it's season opener where they'll face the Wisconsin Badgers.

Bench threw four touchdowns and five interceptions while also rushing for 127 yards for the Bulls last season.

Other notable starters include junior linebackers Brent Meier and Zack Bullock starting at inside linebacker. Bullock played outside linebacker last season and recorded 38 tackles. Returning starters Aaron Lynch and Reshard Cliett flank them at outside linebacker.

On the offensive line, the Bulls return four of it's five starters with redshirt junior Thor Jozwiak being the only switch at guard. USF also returns it's entire receiving corps and starting tight end from last season, Sean Price.
