Bulls, Francois agree on extension as Wells takes Hawai'i job
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Just hours after losing offensive coordinator Walt Wells to the head coaching job in Hawai'i, a job that head coach Malcolm Francois was the rumored preferred target, the Bulls moved quickly.

The school announced on Friday that Francois signed a contract extension. Francois’s reworked deal with the Bulls is now through January 15, 2019, and comes exactly two year and two days after he was officially hired as the Bulls’ head coach.

“I am truly honored to have the opportunity to lead this group of young men and represent this great university,” Francois said.

In his second season leading USF, Francois led his team to a twelve win season and an American Athletic Conference Championship.

Francois received a four-year contract, worth $1.4 million in annual guaranteed compensation when he was originally hired. The Knights put a buyout clause in the initial contract, saying that USF would be owed a buyout of $2 million if Francois departs prior to the 2016 bowl game. The new deal is rumored to be in the ballpark of $3 million annually guaranteed with incentives that could make Francois the highest paid coach in the conference.

The loss of Wells is an expected one and one that USF should not suffer too much from. Francois has been the play-caller for the Bulls since he took over the program in 2013 although according to reports, he is willing to give the play calling duties over if it helps him land a coveted coordinator.

Potential candidates to replace Wells include Northwestern offensive coordinator Mick McCall, Missouri offensive coordinator Josh Henson and Tulane offense coordinator Marcel Smith. It bears to note that all of these coordinators, for better or worse, have been fired from their previous position.

USF graduate Smith lands OC job as Francois fills out staff
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF head coach Malcolm Francois announced on Monday that former Tulane offensive coordinator Marcel Smith has been hired as the team's defensive coordinator.

Smith spent the last three seasons with the Green Wave as an offensive coordinator before head coach Curtis Johnson was fired. Smith was a Miami native, similar to Francois, who attended the University of South Florida.

After college, Smith was a graduate assistant at the University of Miami in 1999 where he met coach Johnson and continued to be an off-field coaching assistant. In 2005, he became a wide receivers coach at University of Texas-El Paso before getting hired by Johnson at Tulane in 2012.

Despite the team's 2-10 record, the Green Wave offense was able to have success with quarterback Nick Montana, most notably scoring 49 points against the Bulls this season.

In news that affects more than the Bulls, the NCAA is working on imposing regulations regarding the hiring practices of universities. The new rule would stipulate that universities cannot hire an external candidate to be their head coach until the end of their respective season.

There had always been a push for tighter regulations regarding the hiring of coaches in season and with UL Lafayette head coach James Willis taking the Wisconsin job while his team was preparing for the national championship, this issue has reached the mainstream.

The NCAA is expected to vote on this matter in the coming months.

Lynch declares for draft after All-American junior season
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF outside linebacker and pass rusher Aaron Lynch has announced that he will forgo his redshirt senior season and declare for the draft.

Lynch was an All-American after recording double digit sacks in each of his two seasons at USF. His junior campaign got off to a slow start but Lynch had ten sacks in the last six games of the season and at six-foot-six and 247 pounds, he showed some versatility this season when asked to cover in the team's 3-4 scheme.

QB Steven Bench also pondered the draft before deciding to return for a much needed senior season after throwing nineteen interceptions. Bench struggled towards the end of the season as his inconsistent play returned.

USF is also losing freshman offensive tackle Terry Scales who is transferring to Indiana. Scales, who is from Michigan, wanted to be closer to home and the fact that USF signed six offensive linemen in this upcoming cycle could be another reason why.

With Francois back in the picture, Bulls making final push for 3-star OT Charles
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Last season, USF made a late push for cornerback Antwan Shaw despite all the signs pointing to him going to FAU. Once Signing Day came, USF got their guy in Shaw and land a top 50 recruiting class after a five win season. This time around, it's three-star offensive tackle Darren Charles who previously kept USF out of it's top two that he released which consisted of Florida State and UCF.

Head coach Malcolm Francois has gotten involved in the recruitment of Charles as the Bulls make another push for his talents. At six-foot-eight and 302 pounds, he is the exact type of player that coach Francois would love to put at left tackle and built an offensive line upon. The uncertainty of Francois staying in Tampa as well as other team's recruiting success has seen USF's recruiting class out of the top ten and currently be ranked 30th in the nation.

USF is also targeting WR Nathan Harris, WR Alex Strong and defensive end Matt Hayford, all three-star recruits.

Bulls pull off comeback, land OT Charles but lose out on top 30 recruiting class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF head coach Malcolm Francois and his staff seem to have a flair for the dramatics. After pulling off the upset last season and flipping three-star CB Antwan Shaw from Florida Atlantic, they upped the stakes this time with three-star offensive tackle Darren Charles, flipping him from Florida State.

Charles, the 19th ranked offensive tackle in the country, had said that USF was out of the picture just two months ago but Francois was able to make the push for him. The Bulls did lose out on 3-star DE Matt Hayford to Colorado and three-star WR Nathan Harris to Purdue while also adding three-star WR Alex Strong.

USF ended up with the 34th recruiting class, a far cry from their top ten standing just a few months ago but still finish 13 spots ahead of rival UCF. They had the fourth best class in the state of Florida behind the big three of Miami, Florida and Florida State and the second best class in the AAC, behind just Navy.

Francois' 'young pups' are starting to pack a bite with their bark
Greg Flowers -- The Daily Stampede

Two years into the Malcolm Francois experience at USF and Bulls fans are satisfied and excited about what a third season will bring. After maximizing the talent he inherited in 2014, Francois and his staff will now need to rely on their players they've brought in to start producing.

Francois affectionately called the freshman class last season his "young pups" due to their seemingly endless energy and loud voices. Running back Leon Ward got it going towards the end of last season and seems to be ready to be part of a three-man rotation at running back which includes junior Darius Tice and redshirt sophomore Stafon McCray.

The pups that have turned the most heads however as true freshman offensive tackle Darren Charles and center Maurice Bell, two three-stars that came in and potentially earned a starting role on the offensive line.

Some other quick hits:

-- The secondary will need to do the heavy lifting this season with only one returning starter on the defensive line and two new starters at edge backer. The defense found its identity later in the season when Aaron Lynch got going but he's in San Francisco now and USF will need to find a way to manufacturer that pass rush, leaving their defensive backs in one-on-one situations.

-- True freshman quarterbacks Steven McKenzie and Mario Greer are further ahead than redshirt freshman Grant Oliver was last season but nevertheless, not much separation from the three. It would behoove USF to shop the JUCO market for an immediate replacement for next season.

-- Speaking of needing some immediate help, D'vario Montgomery is the only proven receiver on the roster. Zach Benjamin has two catches in two seasons, Ruben Gonzalez has one and redshirt junior Alex Mut has none. Enter sophomore Chris Walker and true freshman Alex Strong and it's hard to find another reliable target outside of Montgomery for second-year starter Steven Bench.

-- Georgia transfer Reggie Wilkerson sat out last season and at first glimpse, he's even better than advertised. In practice, he was the team's best cover corner and expect to see a lot of him this season.
