Yikes, not how you want to get exposed by Wisconsin. Time to re-evaluate.

Fuente's stint as passing game coordinator -- unofficial head play caller -- short lived following 'mutual' split
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

Less than two months since he was initially announced as the newest member of the USF coaching staff, Justin Fuente is on the outs.

Fuente announced on his social media page that he was no longer a member of the USF Bulls coaching staff, thanking head coach Malcolm Francois for the opportunity. In the paragraph long post, Fuente highlighted wanting to spend time with his family and taking a year off following a few rocky seasons following his dismissal at Memphis as a head coach and then at Iowa State as an offensive coordinator.

Fuente was the head coach at Memphis from 2012 until 2017 when he was fired and replaced by Cam Cameron. Fuente then spent the next two seasons with the Cyclones as their play-caller before Fuente and the entire staff was relieved of their duties when new head coach Jay Nieman took over.

The decision was described as "mutual" from someone within the program as Fuente's hiring did put current Bulls offensive coordinator Marcel Smith in a bit of a bind, especially when it was rumored that Fuente took over game-planning and play calling on game day. Fuente was brought in to help tutelage David Johnson and reign the talented signal caller in and that hasn't happened. While Johnson is nearly averaging 380 yards passing game, he has five interceptions through two games after throwing eighteen interceptions last season.

Malcolm Francois to take over play calling duties vs. Florida as freshman Harrell expected to make first career start
Sean Caesar -- The Athletic

South Florida Bulls head coach Malcolm Francois will resume play-calling duties for the team in their upcoming game against the Florida Gators, according to Anthony Rapp of ESPN.

Francois later told Jay McMahon of the Tampa Bay Gazzette he talked to associate head coach Marcel Smith (offense), who had been calling the plays, and said the switch is "just a change in structure."

Francois gave up his play-calling duties back when the team hired Smith four years ago to focus more of his energy on the defensive and special teams units as well as recruiting. But coming off a ten turnover game that featured three quarterbacks throwing interceptions, including four from returning starter David Johnson, a change was in order.

"I think there is sort of an identity crisis in Tampa happening," Rapp said in an interview on WQAM 560, "[Francois] believes in running the football, power spread if you will and I think the success they had with the two receivers [Zac White and Franklin Sapp] sort of jaded Marcel [Smith] and his play-calling. The Bulls are traditionally a run first team and when you're throwing seven interceptions, it doesn't matter that you lead the country in passing offense."

The Bulls are also anticipating a switch a quarterback after burning freshman Michael Harrell's redshirt. While an official decision hasn't been announced, those close to the program are "confident" that Harrell will get the start over Johnson.

Rapp wasn't willing to go that far.

"The people I talk to, they expect to see Michael [Harrell] to get in the game due to his athleticism and the fact that they did essentially waste what was to be a redshirt season."
