Gators get the last laugh, land surprise commitment from Bulls target, 4-star offensive tackle Williams
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The stage appeared set for the South Florida Bulls to land a five-star running back and an all-star cast of offensive linemen in Brian Smith, Derek Charles and Ryan Williams. We now know that that won't be the case and they'll be lucky to get just one of them.

The Florida Gators were able to land four-star offensive tackle Ryan Williams out of Cartersville, Georgia, snatching him away from the grasp of the Bulls after having the lead in his recruitment for several weeks since Williams visited the Bulls and watched them beat the Gators. The commitment also saw the Gators leap frog the Bulls to jump ahead to #10 in the recruiting rankings and slide USF to 12 and gives Florida it's second four-star offensive linemen of the class.

Where does that leave USF? Not in a great place.

South Florida is still in the running for four-star offensive tackle Derek Charles out of California but getting an elite talent to leave the West Coast is going to be a tall task when Oregon is in the running and if he does decide to leave the West Coast, Oklahoma might be seen as a better option.

There is also Brian Smith, the top rated guard in this class who USF simply cannot lose to the Gators. Smith is a local kid and losing him to Florida would be a big blow, especially if they also lose out on Tampa prospect Ben Hawthorne to Kentucky as the four-star tight end has been showing a lot of love on social media to the Wildcats.

If USF swings and misses on Charles and Smith, they'll be left with a class without an offensive linemen. The Bulls did offer two-star offensive lineman Roger Spencer over the weekend but he's a project at best.

Bulls continue to load up at safety with yet another commitment as four-star S Peterson commit to the Bulls
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF has put together quite a run of safeties with the pinnacle being Dan Johnson who is now being followed up with a pair of talented guys in Trey Davis and Chip Bryant. USF is hoping that in this class, it can strike gold again at the position and it's doing so by landing as many as they can.

IMG Academy safety Sam Peterson, originally from Glenrock, Wyoming, committed to the Bulls last week and give them their third safety commit of the class. Add in athlete Brandon Burns who could play safety as well and it's a loaded defensive backfield class.

The Bulls were late on Peterson, not recruiting the safety until he made the move to IMG Academy this past fall and earned his fourth star as well as made his way inside the top 200 rankings. At six-foot-one, he is one of the fastest players in this class and probably fits the mold of what USF wants in their safeties as rangy, physical players capable of playing from hash to hash.

Peterson gives USF it's eleventh commitment of the class as they start winding down into the home stretch with few spots available now. The Bulls have been incredibly efficient, not losing many recruits but the losses could start coming in now. G Brian Smith is leaning towards Florida with an upcoming visit on the dock while USF continues to battle for CB Sonny Underwood but can't quite seem to be able to get him to commit over Iowa. And then there's Ben Hawthorne, the local tight end prospect who flips from school to school depending on the week with Army being the latest fad.
