USF RB Roger Shaw throws water on swan song narrative
Sean Caesar -- The Athletic Writer

USF running back Roger Shaw Jr. is the consensus top running back on most draft boards heading into the bowl season and with good reason after the junior running back won his second Heisman in as many years earlier this month. Shaw himself, however, is saying 'not so fast'.

"I haven't decided yet," said Shaw when asked during media day of his draft prospect and if he'll forgo his senior season. It was seen as a foregone conclusion that he would but when asked outright for the first time, the California native didn't sound like a player ready to leave college.

"I think being here and attending this university, it's been one of the highlights of my life so if I have a chance to extend that, I'll certainly consider it. I'm not in a hurry to get from point A to point B just for the sake of it, it has to make sense and it has to be in line with my journey through life."

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. says he would advise Shaw to declare for the draft but that the running back hasn't asked for his advice or brought the topic up to him.

"[Shaw] is different type of cat," added Francois Sr., "For a lot of guys that come here, the league is the goal and for [Shaw], I'm not sure that's the case, he's got different goals in life than this."

Both Shaw and Francois Sr. did confirm that the two-time Heisman winner will play in the bowl game and they expect full participation from other draft eligible underclassmen. Will Shaw also return for a senior season to try to become the first three time Heisman winner and try to become the NCAA's all-time leader in rushing yards?

Shaw Jr. has the Bulls celebrating a 35-25 Cotton Bowl victory over Kansas
A two-time Heisman winner at running back, Roger Shaw Jr. might have been playing the wrong position this entire time. Shaw finished the game at quarterback for the USF Bulls, leading them to a 28-point second half and a 35-25 comeback win over the Kansas Jayhawks to win the Cotton Bowl.

A former high school quarterback, Shaw replaced Todd Woods and Thomas Jackson in the second half, with Jackson having thrown a pick six to end the half and give Kansas a 10-7 lead at the half.

Shaw finished the game 7 of 10 passing for 86 yards with a touchdown, his lone interception coming on a deep shot to the endzone where his receiver was outjumped for the football. He also rushed for 181 yards and a touchdown, breaking his own single-season rushing touchdown record at USF with his 30th rushing touchdown.

"We've worked on that package since the spring," said offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr., who was calling plays for the first time in his career.

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. confirmed that the plan was to play Shaw at quarterback at points this season.

"We got into a bit of a flow on offense and just never got to it," said Francois Sr. of playing Shaw at quarterback, "It was important for [Shaw] that [Anthony Montgomery] got the start at running back, as a senior so we were going to toy around with the rotation at every position, getting guys look and we felt good about letting Roger [Shaw] play QB if this is indeed his last game with us."

Montgomery rushed for 65 yards while true freshman Danny Felder got his first significant playing time this season, rushing for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Montgomery also had a receiving touchdown and led the team with four receptions for 53 yards.

Shaw, a junior, is undecided on if he'll return for a senior season.

Former five-star receivers Travis Lewis and Louis Dukes IV enter transfer portal
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

While the USF Bulls are waiting on draft decisions from several top juniors such as running back Roger Shaw Jr, defensive ends Adam Hughes and Aaron Spurlock along with receiver Courtney Lane, they can now add two players that won't be on the roster come 2033.

Redshirt junior receivers Travis Lewis and Louis Dukes IV are both in the transfer portal as graduate transfers in a move that was described by a source close to the program as an "encouraged and mutual decision" between all parties involved.

Both former five-star receivers, neither have had much success at USF and mainly played this season in the team's 12 personnel package as blocking receivers. Dukes IV had his best season this year, catching career high eight passes for 102 yards. Lewis, on the other hand, saw his role decreased with the emergence of JUCO transfer Bryan Mangum, going down sixteen catches last season to just five this season.

The Sooners are a name to watch with Dukes who is from the state of Oklahoma and the Sooners are losing their top receiver in senior John Grant.

Francois Sr. receives four-year extension through 2036 as Bulls staff stays put
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF head coach Malcolm Francois and the Bulls have agreed on a new extension that keeps him in Tampa through 2036. The deal comes at the perfect time with openings at both Ohio State and Michigan, two premier program that undoubtedly would have went after the four-time national champion had he been on the market.

The official numbers of the new deal haven't been released but it's rumored to be nearing the $15 million range, which would extend Francois' lead as the highest paid coach in college football, especially with Urban Meyer's retirement.

USF was able to keep the rest of its staff intact with Malcolm Francois Jr. returning as offensive coordinator, as expected, along with defensive coordinator Bob Shoop with both coordinators receiving extensions as well.

Five USF plays declare early for the draft, former Bulls WRs announce transfer
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF underclassmen HB Roger Shaw Jr, WR Courtney Lane, DE Adam Hughes, DE Aaron Spurlock and CB Kareem Hunter have all declared for the draft, foregoing their senior season.

Lane is perhaps the only surprise of the bunch as the rest are all former All-SEC selections with a few All-Americans in Spurlock and Shaw. Shaw also won the Heisman in back to back seasons and for a while, was rumored to perhaps return for a senior season but after speaking with the coaching staff and his family, the 2,000-yard rusher will be playing in the NFL come next fall.

Bulls fans also learned of the landing spot for two former five-star receivers in Travis Lewis and Louis Dukes IV who entered the transfer portal earlier in the month. Lewis will play out his senior season at Oregon while Dukes IV returns to his home state of Oklahoma to play for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Between the early departures, the transfers and the graduating seniors, USF is losing

What do Bulls do with extra roster spots following transfers?
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF's 2033 cycle has been locked up for nearly two months now with the bulk of the class already enrolled and getting ready for spring football. However, with Louis Dukes IV and Travis Lewis now at Oklahoma State and Oregon respectively, USF could potentially make a move by signing day and add to this class.

The three names to watch are Tennessee linebacker Quentin Williams, Vero Beach receiver Vernon Williams and Texas kicker Alex Holmes, all of which are three-star prospects.

It's relatively late in the process to add new names to the board and the Bulls offered them late December during the recruiting dead period and haven't had much contact with them. Vernon Williams is perhaps the most intriguing of the bunch at six-foot-five with and a sub 11-second time in the 100 meter dash. More a track starter than a football player, his build and athleticism definitely catches the eye.

Bulls land nation's top class but former target Buchanan steals spotlight
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF ended the 2033 recruiting cycle with the nation's top class after receiving their final commitment and NLI from Tennessee three-star linebacker Quentin Williams. The Bulls were unable to land three-star receiver Vernon Williams who chose the LSU Tigers but the story of the day wasn't the Bulls but rather a former recruiting target of theirs.

The nation's top ranked high school quarterback Frank Buchanan was a long time commit to South Alabama but in the days leading up to NSD, there had been rumblings of Buchanan backing out of his commitment. 247 Sports confirmed with multiple sources that Buchanan and his circle were initiating contact with USF, Florida, Auburn and Alabama coaches. Sources within USF's program confirmed there was an attempt to rekindle the recruiting progress but claim that the coaching staff had moved on from Buchanan following the commitment of Jeff Jones, the class's number two quarterback.

On NSD, Buchanan had told South Alabama coaches that he was staying put, only to allegedly fax his NLI to Alabama. According to the same report, Buchanan then contacted Alabama to release him from his NLI as the announcement hadn't been made yet and that he wanted to think it over. Buchanan then went to his commitment ceremony a few hours later where he committed to the Tide only for Alabama to not accept his second faxing of his NLI.

"In my years of being around college football, I've never seen something quite like this," said an SEC assistant.

Buchanan ended up signing with Middle Tennessee State, where his uncle was recently hired from South Alabama as a quarterbacks coach.
