Wow maybe they should Coleman run a little more and then maybe they'd have a better record.

Yeah, the roster is a lot more talented than their record would indicate

Spence breaks school record for passing yards, touchdowns in duel with Auburn's Coleman
Dating back to last season, USF's coaching staff and players were buzzing about five-star quarterback Joey Spence.

Spence's brilliance was on full display Saturday as he threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns in the first half before finishing the game with a school record 579 passing yards and eight touchdowns as USF beat Auburn 59-27.

Both records were previously held by Jones, who Spence backed up as a true freshman last year, filling in for an injured Jones and leading the Bulls to an SEC championship. Spence's performance on Saturday might have forced himself into the Heisman picture, starting the game with a 43-yard completion to Jason McDowell and ending that drive a few plays later with a touchdown pass to Jarod Green.

USF running back Bobby Jackson left the game in the first quarter with an injury and did not return, putting more of a burden on Spence to carry the offense and that he did.

After an interception which allowed Auburn to briefly take a 10-7 lead, Spence responded with a tight touchdown throw to Brian Harris in the endzone across the middle of the field and followed it up on the ensuing drive with perhaps the best throw of the night, a 37-yard rope to Derek Young in the corner of the endzone.

It would be Young who would catch the record breaking pass that both broke the yardage and touchdown record as Young spun off a would be tackler and took it 54-yards to the endzone with 4:55 left in the game.

USC, UCLA moving from Pac-12 to Big Ten in 2038
Cassidy Dinkich -- ESPN.com Staff Writer

USC and UCLA, two of the Pac-12's flagship programs, were notified Thursday night that their application to join the Big Ten has been accepted.

The schools will begin play in the conference in 2038 when Northwestern and Vanderbilt are slated to leave the conference and compete as Independents in all sports.

The Big Ten said in a statement that the vote was unanimous when conference presidents and chancellors met on the addition of the two schools on Thursday evening.

"The unanimous vote today signifies the deep respect and welcoming culture our entire conference has for the University of Southern California, under the leadership of President Carol Folt, and the University of California, Los Angeles, under the leadership of Chancellor Gene Block," Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren said.

UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond wrote in a text to ESPN: "College athletics is changing, and UCLA has always led in times of change. For the sake of our student-athletes, and for preserving the legacy of Bruin excellence, we cannot afford to stand still."

The Pac-12 released a statement later Thursday saying it was "extremely surprised and disappointed" by the news of UCLA and USC leaving. The conference is expected to be aggressive in their pursuit of replacement members with TCU, Oklahoma State and Missouri in the Big 12 being potential candidates as well as the Air Force Academy.

Bye Week Report: Bennett's injury presents potential hurdle for Bulls offense, opportunity for other young receivers
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. confirmed to the media on Sunday that true freshman receiver Maurice Bennett will miss the rest of the season after tearing his pectoral muscle in the win over Auburn last week.

The six-foot-four Tampa native has been a top target for Joey Spence and was third on the team in receptions (30), receiving yards (472) and touchdowns (7). In the game against Auburn, Bennett's injury saw Derek Young move from the slot to the X receiver position on the outside that Bennett previously occupied with Young being replaced in the slot by Sam Washington.

Washington was productive as a freshman last year, averaging 20.9 yards per reception as a deep play threat from the slot. He hasn't played as much this season, averaging just 11.6 yards per game but an increased role should improve his production.

Other key players to watch for an increase role are true freshmen Brian Harris and D.J. Manning.

Team Leaders
Passing: Joey Spence (72.9% completion, 3066 yards, 32 TD, 8 INT, 182.4 QB rating)
Rushing: Bobby Jackson (843 yards, 5.7 ypc, 5 TD)
Receiving: Chris Wallace (53 receptions, 583 yards, 10 TD)
Defense: Kenny Fowler (37 tackles, 10 TFL, 1 sack, 5 INT, 2 PBU)

at #8 Penn State (5-2) -- W 35-32

OPEN
at #6 Texas (7-1)
at Florida State (4-5)
at Miami (6-3)
vs. UCF (5-2)

Biggest takeaways from first half of the season
  • Joey Spence is as good as advertised
Many within program felt that throughout the spring last season that Spence outperformed Jeff Jones and that if it was a legitimate competition -- which it wasn't -- Jones' position as starter wouldn't have been etched in stone.

Obviously it wasn't as Jones was arguably by then already the most productive quarterback in school history and he was never not going to start but this sort of hype served as the backdrop for the anticipating leading into the season for Spence and he's been even better.

Despite not having his best receiver in Chris Wallace available for several games, Spence leads the nation in passing yards and touchdowns and is third in completion percentage among players with at least 100 pass attempts.
    -
  • It might be time to readjust the expectations for Kevin Beck
When Beck comes off the bus, he has all the makings of an elite SEC defensive end. His play, however, is far from it.

Despite being a full-time starter this season, Beck has the same amount of sacks (1) as defensive backs Wesley Adams, Tyler Matthews and Kenny Fowler with Matthews not even being a starter. He does solid work against the run and is second on the team in tackles for loss (11) behind only linebacker Travis Thomas who leads the team with fifteen but is far from the dynamic edge player that USF thought they were getting when he transferred in.

This is particularly important because the only weak point on this defense is the lack of a pure pass rush. Travis Peters and John Allen have stumbled into seven and four sacks respectively but neither of them would be described as elite pass rushers. Beck was supposed to be that by his redshirt junior season and he still isn't.
    -
  • Jackson can be an every down back in the SEC
There were no doubts that when healthy, USF junior running back Bobby Jackson was among the most explosive and dynamic players in college football.

He caught 51 passes as a true freshman while rushing for over 1,100 yards and then was averaging 126.3 yards per game on 8.7 yards per carry before a knee injury cut his sophomore season short.

Jackson hasn't been as explosive this year with his yards per carry going down to 5.7 but he's already nearing his rushing attempts total from his freshman season with 147 and could end the season with north of 200 carries on the year and at five-foot-nine and 191 pounds, he's proven that he can handle it.

What to watch for in second half of the season
  • Can Spence track down Jones' record?
Through eight games, Spence has 32 touchdowns and needs 25 more to break Jeff Jones' single season record for most passing touchdowns in a season. With four more games in the regular season and a likely fifth in the SEC Championship game and sixth (or seventh) in the postseason, Spence is on pace for 56 touchdowns, leaving him one shy of the record.

If he does do it, he'll need to do it without one of his top receivers in Bennett but there's plenty of talent around him to ease the loss of Bennett.
    -
  • Does Fowler remain at nickel or get the bump to CB2?
An afterthought as a recruit, redshirt senior Kevin Collins has worked himself into a full-time starter at corner the past two seasons and has been starting opposite of Jeremy Daniels this season at corner.

The most productive of them all, however, has been Kenny Fowler, the sophomore out of New Jersey. He leads the team with five interceptions, returning four of them for touchdowns, and is third in tackles for loss (10) and fourth in tackles (37).

He gets plenty of burn as the team's nickel corner but his production warrants him getting on the field more and more as a true starter at corner. Both Collins and Daniels have also played at nickel before in past seasons.

USF among programs approached for potential college football super league
Sean Caesar -- The Athletic Writer

Less than two weeks ago, the Big Ten announced that USC and UCLA would be joining their conference, leaving the Pac-12. It appeared to be the last domino effect of the rampant conference movement from nearly a decade ago that completely changed college football.

In reality, it might just be the first domino.

As first reported by ESPN, several college football programs have been approached to form a 'super league' of top programs. The Athletic has confirmed that the University of South Florida is among those teams along with the University of Alabama, Ohio State University and Notre Dame University among others.

The structure of such league, similar to the future of college football, is still unclear but what is clear is that it would be made up entirely of college football's top programs with the goal of having it's own college football playoffs.

It's no secret that many top programs are unhappy with the equal payout that teams receive from their conference's TV deals and college football playoff buyouts, whether the team finished 0-12 or 15-0 national champions. USF had a similar gripe with the Big XII which led to its ugly exodus out of the conference into the SEC.

While the Bulls certainly benefited from that move, given their sentiment back then, it stands to reason they might not be too keen on sharing revenue with the likes of Arkansas and Kentucky who quite frankly aren't on the same level as the USF's, Alabama's and Texas'.
