Bulls lose out on two tight end prospects as Mike Clark, John Arnold commit elsewhere
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The week before five-star tight end Neal Higgins is set to make his official visit to USF, the Bulls lost out on two of their targets at the position with four-star Mike Clark committing to Georgia and three-star John Arnold pledging to Southern Miss.

Clark is the thirteen ranked tight end while Arnold is the top ranked fullback but was being recruited by the Bulls as a tight end. USF was trying to get them both on campus at some point later this season but with USF trending towards landing Higgins' commitment, its fair to assume that might have led Clark and Arnold to look elsewhere in pursuit of playing time as USF already has three blue-chip prospects on the roster in Jake Bryant (So), Russell Arrington (So) and Matt Jordan (Fr).

With their commitments, it raises the stake on USF needing to land Higgins who was already their top target this cycle. He'll be on campus this weekend along with five-star running back Kevin Mooney, five-star defensive back Marlon Pace, four-star outside linebacker Marlon Gunn who recently visited the Hurricanes and four-star defensive end Donte Walden who is also considering Indiana.

A name that hasn't been confirmed is four-star quarterback Malcolm Francois III who has had a very quiet and lowkey recruitment but all signs point to a USF/Oregon State battle with his father being the head coach at Oregon State and his grandfather, of course, USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr.

University of South Florida lands two commitments ahead of big recruiting weekend
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF will be hosting six 2045 recruits this upcoming weekend on official visits and while some of them are still checking in for the three-day visit, the Bulls are already off to a hot start with four-star defensive end Donte Walden and three-star offensive guard Justin Jansen pledging to the Bulls on Friday afternoon.

Jansen, a local prospect, surprised many with his presence as it was expected that he'd be visiting Clemson this weekend. Jansen instead stopped by USF's campus where the coaching staff were welcoming in recruits and made his commitment public.

Internally, there had been discussions on whether or not Jansen would be a fit for the Bulls and a take but ultimately, the coaching staff felt comfortable with his projected development and made his offer committable last week which led to Jansen's commitment. More of a project, Jansen will need to add a considerable of weight, upper and lower body strength as well as refine his technique before he is ready to play for the Bulls and projects to be a depth piece.

The same can be said for Walden, even with his four-star tag. He's a good athlete with promising upside due to his twitchiness and ability to get upfield but as a technician, both in pass rush and against the run, he has a ways to go to refine his game in order to play at the Champions Division level. Indiana was also involved in his recruitment.

Bulls continue to win as they clobber No. 3 Nebraska 59-17
USF junior running back Justin Thomas was relegated to the sidelines for the past two games as he watched his Bulls teammate beat a very good Stanford team and handily take care of Texas.

With the Champions Division's leader in yards per carry back in the lineup, Thomas proved to be the electric player that Nebraska feared heading into the game, scoring six touchdowns as Nebraska quarterback Michael Butler was intercepted six times in the Cornhuskers 59-17 loss to South Florida on Saturday.

USF came out the gates swinging with a 50-yard bomb to Eddie Shaw and after both teams swapped field goals in the second quarter, Shaw found the end zone once more in the second quarter to extend the lead to two touchdowns and Thomas scored his first touchdown with 35 seconds remaining in the first half to begin the rout.

It was all fueled by USF's defense which completely blanketed Texas' offense two weeks ago and outside of two busted coverages, was able to shut down Nebraska's offense. The Cornhuskers top ranked rushing offense did find success, rushing for 168 yards on 5.8 yards per carry but with the game getting out of hand early, they had to abandon the running game while USF rushed the ball 47 times -- compared to just 29 rushing attempts for Nebraska -- to the tune of 310 yards and the aforementioned six touchdowns.

The legacy continues; Malcolm Francois III makes surprise appearance and commits on the spot to the Bulls
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Malcolm Francois III was on the sidelines when Jeff Jones broke the NCAA record for most passing yards in a single season. His father, Malcom Francois Jr., was the offensive coordinator at the time for the South Florida Bulls and his grandfather, Malcolm Francois Sr, was and still is the head coach of the Bulls.

Francois III will be following the footsteps of Jones, his father, his grandfather and his two uncles by committing to play for the University of South Florida, becoming a third generation Bull.

"I was born to be a Bull," Francois III said in his first public interview with ESPN after his commitment, "I grew up a big fan of the Jeff Jones', the Joey Spence's, the Chris Wallace's, their pictures hung on my wall even when we weren't in Tampa but Tampa and USF will always be my home, our home and it's only right that I continue the legacy."

Francois III was considered an Oregon lean prior to four-star quarterback Chris Fenton commitment to the Ducks but according to Francois III, it was always a battle between Oregon State -- where his father currently coaches at -- and the Bulls.

"I definitely looked at Oregon," Francois III clarified, "But, honestly, it was always going to be either [Oregon State or USF], I really couldn't see myself playing anywhere else."

Francois III added that his father was made aware of the decision earlier this week and that he's fully supportive of the younger Francois' decision.

"Even if [Francois Sr.] wasn't at USF right now, I'd probably be going there. I just couldn't say the same for Oregon State so at the end, it ended up being a clear decision for me to make and I want to focus on winning a state championship so we came down here, sort of last minute and sealed the deal."

As a prospect, there's plenty to like about his game as he's an electric quarterback with seventeen rushing touchdowns on the season for Corvallis High School and a live arm that is capable of making all of the throws, averaging 14.2 yards per completion this season against lower level competition in Oregon.

When Francois III was at Tampa Jesuit last season and played a tougher schedule, defenses were able to force him to play from the pocket and take away those deep shots which revealed a few flaws in Francois III's game as his accuracy can at times be erratic, especially on shorter to intermediate throws. He's got a natural feel for the game but at times, he can get caught in no-mans-land which results in sacks or even worse, turnover worthy plays where he's trying to make a play happen when there isn't one to be made. Francois also lacks prototypical size for the position as he's listed at five-foot-ten (closer to 5"8 from an in-person evaluation) and 180 pounds.

Fortunately for Francois III, he'll have the chance to sit for a season or two behind Chris Price and/or Kevin Meadows who project to be the starters for the next two seasons. He likely wouldn't have that luxury at Oregon State as they are in desperate need of an upgrade at the quarterback position.
