Freshman star Davis 'sent home' following breaking of team rules, will not travel with team to Stillwater
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

After not being at practice for the public section of practices this week, USF freshman star Trey Davis has been suspended from the team due to breaking team rules and will not be with the team when they play Oklahoma State in Stillwater this Saturday.

The team made the announcement public on Thursday in a press release. Throughout the week, Bulls head coach Malcolm Francois declined to comment on Davis' absence before commenting on the suspension following Thursday's practice.

"[Davis] is a young man and young man make mistakes," said Francois, "He knows what the deal is, his family knows what the deal is and we felt appropriate at the time for him to be sent home and do some re-evaluating."

According to a source within the program, David was suspended due to an altercation with a female student while at the female's off-campus apartment. The altercation led to police arriving at Davis' dorm before Davis fled the scene and was eventually apprehended at a later time. He was not arrested.

There are no details on what caused the altercation.

Francois did not comment on the nature of the suspension or how long it will last. The Texas product is a former five-star whose troubled past saw many top colleges pass on him. Eddie Fernandez, a USF insider at 247Sports, detailed Davis' checkered past in an article from last year:

Davis shined as a freshman at Robert E. Lee High School before an altercation with a coach saw him transfer to Midland High School. Davis' time at Midland was short-lived and never played a single down for the Bulldogs before transferring that summer to IMG Academy where he found success on the Ascenders varsity team at corner while also playing three games during his sophomore season on their national team. While at IMG, Davis is rumored to have had an "incident with a female student-athlete" which led to his dismissal according to those close to the program. According to Davis, the decision to leave IMG was his and he moved back to Midland, Texas where he enrolled at Greenwood High School and played his junior season there before he was suspended for the Texas State Playoffs for breaking an undisclosed team rule and eventually was ruled academically ineligible heading into the spring.

Davis is third on the team in rushing with 130 yards and sixth with 100 receiving yards......as a defensive player. Primarily playing nickel this season, Davis is third on the team with 20 tackles and leads the team with two interceptions.

Davis returns to team but with Bentley's performance, does he return to starting lineup?
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

USF freshman defensive back Trey Davis has returned on campus and was at practice during the Bulls bye week.

Davis, who was suspended last week, was seen on his Instagram back on school grounds as early as Sunday morning. The nature of Davis' suspension has never been confirmed by the school or David but according to reports, David fled the scene when police arrived at his campus dorm following an altercation with a female University of Miami student at her off-campus apartment.

The return of Davis might not guarantee him his starting spot as the Bulls top nickel corner. In his absence, Bradley Bentley matched a school record three interceptions last week. The end of Davis' suspension also does not mean that it's the end of his punishment as the coaching staff may opt to bench him next week against Texas Tech in addition as well.

Some other USF news

  • Senior running back Alex Strong is out for a few weeks with a sprained ankle. The former receiver was averaging just 2.3 yards per carry in what has been a down year for the running game in general
  • The Bulls have scheduled a home-and-home serie with USC. The Bulls will travel to Los Angeles in 2021 and host the Trojans in 2022. This closes out the Bulls 2022 non-conference schedule with road trips to Florida and Louisville while hosting Rutgers and USC. The Bulls have one open spot in their 2021 non-conference schedule.
  • Junior WR Zac White said he's not worried about his touchdown drought this season. White, who had nine and eleven touchdowns in his first two seasons, is touchdown-less almost halfway through the season.

"They'll come," said White, "I'm not worried about it at all, I'm producing, we're winning, it'll come together eventually."
