Rebels Come Out Hot But Fizzle Out in 49-21 Loss to Bulls
There's SEC speed and then there's Florida speed and then there's south Florida speed.

The Ole Miss Rebels got introduced, acquainted and reacquainted with the phenomenon as South Florida hung 49 points on the Rebels in the Bulls' 49-21 win in Tampa on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulls put together 668 yards of total offense on 66 plays, averaging over ten yards per play against an outmatched Ole Miss defense. USF had three runs of over 20+ yards while both Derrick Byrd and Pat Newsome had catches of over sixty yards. Corey Montgomery and Jean-Jacques Francois dominated the middle of the field, including Montgomery's 26-yard catch and run touchdown to tie the game with 2:15 left in the first quarter after Ole Miss had jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a Pookie Harrell fumble on the first offensive play.

Ole Miss responded with a touchdown on the next drive but it would be their last one of the game. USF defensive coordinator Pat Fitzgerald shut Seth Shaw down after that, opting to load the box and force Tyler Horne to make plays with his arm. He didn't get a chance to with two inexperienced tackles going up against arguably the best edge combo in the nation in B.J. Patton and Greg White.

At one point in the fourth quarter, Patton tackled Horne on a read option play behind the line of scrimmage and then sacked him on back to back plays to force a three-and-out. It was a standout performance from Patton who led the Bulls with ten tackles.

Four-star linebacker Pearson commits to Bulls over Texas
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Newport Beach linebacker Brent Pearson has committed to the University of South Florida following his official visit this past weekend. Pearson was one of two commitments in the star-filled weekend of visits as Tamiami punter Adam Cain also pledged his commitment to the Bulls.

The nation's 9th ranked inside linebacker, Pearson will be joining a loaded position group that brought in three four-stars last season and could be adding more after Pearson. Pearson's athletic profile is very promising with a lot of similarities to Curtis Carter, a four-star linebacker that USF signed last season. Both are around six feet tall, 230 pounds and have the ability to be sideline to sideline players.

USF defensive coordinator Pat Fitzgerald isn't shy about using sub packages with the team rotating four linebackers this season depending on down and distance and the offensive personnel. Pearson's commitment likely won't affect their pursuit of five-star linebacker Adam Hughes and Maryland's Kelvin Davis. Hughes is a versatile linebacker that could eventually make the move to defensive end if he keeps physically growing while Davis can play all three linebacker spots at Will, Mike and even Sam if he adds more weight to his frame. Their versality allows for USF to sign all three this season and not have too much talent redundancy.

Speaking of, USF will likely carry two punters next season with the commitment of Cain as current starter Spencer Quinn still has a year of eligibility left. Cain is further along than Quinn was as an incoming freshman and could potentially compete for the starting job right away despite Quinn's success this season, averaging nearly 40 yards per punt.

Ohio State's got a little more speed than Ole Miss, should make for a good game. No one's been able to slow down USF though, and that home crowd is gonna be rocking.

Patton, Whitehead Leave With Injuries As Buckeyes Hold Off Bulls
The stage was set for George Mobley, a junior college transfer, to be a legendary name.

It ended with him throwing two interceptions as Ohio State was able to survive and capitalize off two key injuries to beat USF 34-31 on Saturday night. The loss was the Bulls' second loss at home in nearly ten years but their second in as many years.

Ronnie Smith's kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half provided a much needed jolt to the Bulls fans in attendance inside a rainy Raymond James Stadium. It also cut Ohio State's lead to three and just when things seemed to be going perfectly for the Bulls, they would lose two of their best players in just as many drives as quarterback Antonio Whitehead left the game with an injury to his throwing arm and defensive end B.J. Patton was out for the rest of the game with a rib injury.

It didn't stop USF's offense from scoring twice more, once on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Mobley to Corey Montgomery on the same drive that Whitehead got injured and the second time on an E.J. Thomas touchdown to open the fourth quarter to retake the lead following Ryan Colbert's 11-yard touchdown pass.

Colbert would find the endzone once more on a 88-yard jet sweet on the first play of their drive following a Mobley interception in the redzone. It was a tough night for defensive end Greg White who failed to set the edge on that long touchdown run and on the previous scoring drive, jumped offsides on a third play where Patton had gotten the sack. Two plays later, Patton would leave the game with an injury and not return.

Mobley tried to mount a late drive with less than two minutes left in the game but was intercepted once more.

Ohio State's got a little more speed than Ole Miss, should make for a good game. No one's been able to slow down USF though, and that home crowd is gonna be rocking.
that defense worried me and for good reason. i still think we win if bj patton is healthy in that fourth quarter
