Risen from the depths of self doubt, self pity, USF's Daniel Moore stands before you
Sean Caesar -- The Athletic Writer

The speech had become scripted, expected and mundane for Jackie Bowers. Once or twice a year, her son would call her, asking, no, begging for a plane ticket back home. Sometimes, he'd have the flight selected already and just need the payment info. One time, he even booked the flight himself and was just letting her know ahead of time he'd be on his way. No matter the slight change in details, the end result would be the same. She'd deliver the speech, sometimes through her tears or to the sound of his and on some occasions, both and the call would end with Daniel Moore telling his mother he had to go to sleep and get ready for practice tomorrow.

"He hated it from day one."

Those aren't the words you expect to hear from the mother of a five-star prospect that went to one of college football's premier programs. Back in 2029, Moore was high school football's top ranked center and a player that USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. had put at the top of the Bulls recruiting board and was personally involved in his recruitment.

Moore wanted to go to in-state Georgia Tech, his dream school and his mother's alma mater but Francois Sr. was known as college football's top recruiter for a reason. When he really wanted a player, he got them. So was the case for Moore, who chose the Bulls over Georgia Tech and was part of a recruiting class that was loaded with talent and had another five-star offensive lineman in Michael Bowser that Moore was excited to play with and Francois Sr. was excited to coach. That was about the last time Moore, now a redshirt senior, was excited about football until this year.

It didn't take long for Moore's struggles at USF to begin. He struggled at center, both with snapping the ball accurately and blocking the man in front of him. He was both trying to shed some of his baby weight while also needing to add strength to play at the college level. The first of those calls came after the spring game, where he surrendered five QB pressures and two sacks.

"I was ready to go back home," says Moore, now a projected starter at center for the Bulls in his fifth season, "I just felt like lightyears behind everyone and that was tough, I wasn't really ready at all."

The recruiting services, by Moore's own admission, had missed on Moore's evaluation. He wasn't a day-one contributor type prospect, nor a year-two, year-three and even year-four. Through those years, it was Moore who had to deal with the recruiting services misevaluation of him and his mother who had to deal with Moore's mental health struggles during that time. College is a tough time for anyone, especially for a student-athlete that isn't playing and double for a student-athlete that was expected to not play but be a great player.

"Being called a bust has a toll on your mind," Moore says, "You obviously have expectations for yourself and that's bad enough but the constant reminder that you're a failure just makes it worse and it got really dark there for a while."

According to both Moore and his mother, the darkest time came when he lost the starting center job and was going to be a backup once more. He called his mother but there was no speech this time, he just cried and she listened.

"When you're not a five-star player anymore, are you still a five-star person? He was dealing with that and just trying to find himself, trying to find his self worth. Daniel [Moore] has always been good at sports and this was the first time he wasn't having the success that he was used to having," says Bowers.

Bowers was worried about her son so she called Francois Sr. who suggested that Moore take a few days off just before the season opener.

"If a kid's got a sprained ankle, you let him sit for a few days. When it comes to mental health, it's the same thing to me. You allow the athlete, the person, the time to rehab that injury, that ailment, whether it be physical or mental. It's a tough part of our sport," says Francois Sr., who says that the Bulls have dedicated staff members to deal with player's psyche and well being.

Moore was back within a day but admits it was still an ongoing process to get right mentally, something he's still dealing with to this day.

"I just work on my mental health every day," says Moore, who is now seeing a licensed sports psychologist that's independent from the football program, "I don't look at it anymore as 'if I start, I'm good' or if this happens then everything is straight. It's a process and there might not be a finish line and that's okay."

True freshman Jones named starter for Bulls ahead of opener against Arkansas
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

South Florida's quarterback competition has come to an end.

With kickoff approaching at Raymond James Stadium against Arkansas, true freshman Jeff Jones was announced as the team's starting quarterback.

Thomas Jackson, a redshirt sophomore, was the frontrunner for the position. He played in the final three games of last season, replacing Todd Woods at time and rushed for 155 yards on the ground as a running quarterback while also throwing six touchdowns to five interceptions.

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. had said after the spring game that if the season began that day, Jackson would be the starter but that the competition was far from over. Jones was apparently able to close the gap and eventually overtake Jackson with a strong fall camp. Jones is also changing his jersey number from 7, which he wore in the spring, to 5 after the number became available with Robert Givens being honored with the number one jersey.

On the offensive line, it's co-starters at left guard with Luis Butler and Justin West. The rest of the released depth chart shook out as expected.

In related but non-USF news, former Bulls receiver Louis Dukes IV was named the starting quarterback at Oklahoma State. Dukes was a high school quarterback and a five-star prospect but moved to receiver once at USF before transferring this past season and after appealing with the NCAA, he now has two years of eligibility left at Oklahoma State. Another former USF receiver in Travis Lewis is not only a starter at Oregon, he was named team captain.

Bulls would not be denied in season opener win 27-25 over Arkansas
The South Florida Bulls were cruising along to a win in their season opener with a true freshman at quarterback, a first under head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. But then the true freshman made a true freshman mistake, throwing an interception that gave Arkansas life.

The Razorbacks were able to make it close, getting within a two-point conversion of tying the game and sending into overtime but failed to do so as the Bulls hung on to beat Arkansas 27-25 on Saturday afternoon.

Jeff Jones' fourth quarter interception came in the red zone where USF had a chance to go up 31-13, effectively ending the game. Instead, Arkansas was able to score on the ensuing drive, closing the gap to five with 3:57 left in the game after a failed two-point attempt.

Jones and the Bulls offense continued to be aggressive, trying to get into the endzone but ultimately had to settle for a 48-yard field goal. Jones finished the game with 352 yards passing with a touchdown to running back Danny Felder. Felder also had two rushing touchdowns and rushed for 119 yards.

Arkansas' Antwaun Edwards connected with Jeremy Miller for a 43-yard completion on second down before Carlton White's third touchdown made it a two-point game with 47 seconds left in the game. Arkansas went for two but Edwards was promptly sacked.

USF WR Brent Cunningham once again sidelined with shoulder injury
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

USF senior wide receiver Brent Cunningham will miss the next few weeks with a shoulder injury, the same shoulder that sidelined him for several games last season.

Cunningham, one of the team's most seasoned players, averaged 44.7 yards per game last year in what was a bounce back campaign for him after disappointing in 2031 where his role increased.

Cunningham got injured on his first and only catch of the day last week against Arkansas in the opener, a three-yard reception that left him holding his right shoulder. He did not return and replacing him was a mixture of Bryan Mangum and Matthew Smith, who finished with seven and six catches on the game. True freshman Marques Iosefo also got in the game, catching three passes.

All three figure to have bigger roles on the team as Cunningham will rehab and try to be back by the team's highly anticipated matchup against Alabama, a game that Cunningham missed last year as well.

Tigers are embarrassed following a 52-21 shellacking by USF
After being neck and neck with the USF Bulls through three quarters, including leading at some point in the third quarter, the LSU Tigers and their fans saw up close and personal just how quickly the Bulls can pull away from opponents and how far the gap is between the SEC East opponents.

USF scored 31 unanswered points to end their 52-21 win over the LSU Tigers as true freshman quarterback Jeff Jones was unfazed by Death Valley on Saturday, throwing four touchdowns and for 455 yards.

Jones' last touchdown came as time expired and with controversy, throwing a 55-yard screen pass to USF cornerback Adam Kelly. Boos rained on the field, aimed perhaps both at their opponent and their team for allowing a dump off screen near the sidelines to go for a long touchdown.

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. defended both his son, USF offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr, as well as the play call.

"We go back and forth with the defense during practice a lot," said Francois Sr. after the game, "I had told Adam [Kelly] that if he got an interception, we'd throw him a pass and that's what happened. What happened after he caught the ball, you're in the wrong locker room asking the wrong person about that."
