Big 12 votes to expand to twelve teams as Francois stays put at USF
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

For the first time in three years, January 1st doesn't mean a raise for USF head coach Malcolm Francois as the typically sought after head coach was quick to shut down any rumors of his exodus.

Francois and the rest of the staff survived the head coaching carousel without having to relocate with defensive coordinator Marty English and offensive coordinator Marcel Smith both receiving extensions.

The lack of major openings likely led to Francois staying put as well as the Big 12 schools voting to expand to twelve teams. The conference hasn't announced who those two teams will be yet and the favorites remain Houston and SMU but Florida schools USF and UCF also are in the mix.

Notable Head Coaching Changes
Syracuse :: Bob Davie replaces Scott Shafer (fired)
Wake Forest :: Lorenzo Ward replaces Bill O'Brien (fired)
-----
Minnesota :: Clarence McKinney replaces Tony Levine (fired)
Penn State :: Eric Price replaces Tommy Tuberville (fired)
-----
Iowa State :: Brian Lindgren replaces Peter Rhoads (fired)
-----
Houston :: Mick McCall replaces Clarence McKinney (left for new job)
Memphis :: Cam Cameron replaces Justin Fuente (fired)
Tulane :: Mark Criner replaces Brian Lindgren (left for new job)
-----
Arkansas :: Chris Tormey replaces Sean Kugler (fired)
LSU :: Randy Edsall replaces Les Miles (fired)
Missouri :: Gary Anderson replaces Jay Johnson (fired)

Trio of early departures leaves Bulls defense, rushing attack in question for 2017
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF had three All-Americans on defense this past season and two of them, cornerback Reggie Wilkerson and DT Deadrin Senat, won't be there next season.

Both of them declared early for the draft along with running back Staffon McCray. The trio join an impressive group of departing players such as captains WR Zach Benjamin and CB Lamar Robins.

Robins was a four year-starter at USF and along with nickel Nate Godwin graduating, USF is losing all three of its top corners along with safety Trevon Griffin.

2017 Players Leaving » Career Stats
#8 Reggie Wilkerson (CB, RS Junior): Declared Early » 72 tackles, 6 interceptions, 5 pass breakups.
#56 Deadrin Senat (DT, RS Junior): Declared Early » 39 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 9 sacks.

Bulls experience quiet National Signing Day with majority of 2017 class already on campus
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Last year, USF signed not one but two five stars on National Signing Day to land a top-ten recruiting class, a first in program history. This time around, only one National Letter of Intent came in and it was from three-star guard Nic Haynes and the recruiting class finished ranked 36th in the nation behind the likes of Northwestern and Boise State.

While the Bulls weren't able to land big fishes this time around, there were still plenty of positives. With only eleven scholarship slots available, USF was able to sure up some positions of need such as defensive tackle and cornerback while also getting a four-star quarterback in David Johnson. The other plus is that outside of Haynes, all of USF's class enrolled early and will undergo spring camp with the team.

Recruiting Class
QB David Johnson [QB #6]: 6'3", 208lbs | Tucker, GA | 4-star
HB David Ross [HB #10]: 6'1", 221lbs | Hinesville, GA | 4-star

G Nic Haynes [G #39]: 6'5", 307lbs | Bonita Springs, FL | 3-star
CB Bradley Bentley [CB #40]: 6'2", 176lbs | Cartesville, GA | 3-star

2017 USF Bulls football preview: How high is the ceiling for Oliver following sophomore season?
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Even the biggest Grant Oliver supporter -- and there weren't many -- couldn't have seen his sophomore season coming. In his first year as a starter, Oliver broke every single season passing record and did so with very little help from his offensive line and rushing attack for most of the second half of the season. He also did it with two true freshman -- albeit talented -- as his top two receivers and first-year contributors at tight end.

The room returns all participants from last season and add a very talented quarterback in true freshman David Johnson with many within the program citing that he's far ahead of where any of the current quarterbacks were as freshmen.

A look at USF’s quarterback situation:

Projected depth chart
#5 Grant Oliver, Rs Jr. | 6'2", 224lbs | 86 ovr, 56 spd, 88 thp, 88 tha
#9 Steven McKenzie, Rs So. | 6'1", 211lbs | 80 ovr, 69 spd, 78 thp, 81 tha
#10 David Johnson, Fr. | 6'3", 208lbs | 77 ovr, 72 spd, 85 thp, 84 tha
#15 Mario Greer, Rs So. | 6'1", 195lbs | 76 ovr, 68 spd, 81 thp, 82 tha
#11 Brandon Tidwell, Rs Fr. | 6'3", 195lbs | 70 ovr, 72 spd, 79 thp, 83 tha

Expected starter: The most locked down position of the team as Oliver is the unquestioned starter.

Major storyline: McKenzie will serve as backup on paper to preserve Johnson's redshirt but should Oliver go down early in the season, does the team go to McKenzie or the true freshman?

2017 USF Bulls football preview: Ward and Miller looking to be feature backs in final season
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

It's a huge testament to the caliber of running backs that USF has had over the years that someone as gifted as Leon Ward -- and even Richard Miller -- has yet to have over 150 carries in a single season.

Ward and Miller will get their chances as seniors this season with Ward expected to be the feature back after a junior season that saw his yard per carry average dip from 7.8 to 4.4. Behind Ward and Miller is a slew of unproven talent including converted receiver Alex Strong who at six-foot-one and 227 pounds, looks the part. Incoming freshman David Ross also adds some size and power to the position and will battle with Reynolds and Strong for that third running back position.

A look at USF’s running back situation:

Projected depth chart
#6 Leon Ward, Sr. | 6'0", 189lbs | 84 ovr, 92 spd, 95 acc, 82 btk, 78 car
#24 Richard Miller, Sr. | 6'2", 223lbs | 83 ovr, 84 spd, 90 acc, 86 btk, 74 car
#28 David Ross, Fr. | 6'1", 221lbs | 76 ovr, 84 spd, 83 acc, 78 btk, 77 car
#25 Alex Strong, Jr. | 6'1", 227lbs | 74 ovr, 87 spd, 84 acc, 72 btk, 98 car
#29 Brian Reynolds, Rs Fr. | 6'0", 228lbs | 73 ovr, 85 spd, 90 acc, 71 btk, 65 car

Expected starter: Ward is the clear cut number one back due to his speed compared to the rest of the crew in Miller and true freshman Ross.

Major storyline: Outside of Ward, this is a big and powerful bunch of running backs that for the most part, have redundant skill sets. Enter Strong who despite his name and size, isn't that much of a physical runner as a converted receiver but he did play running back in high school and looks natural back there. Add in the fact that he's probably the team's second fastest running back and his hands, it will be interested to see how Strong is used.
