NFL 2008 Mock Draft
Image

2008 Combine Ups and Downs
The infamous Underwear Olympics had its share of surprises and letdowns. East Carolina tailback Chris Johnson blows away scouts with his 4.24 record 40-yard dash. Consensus number one overall pick Jake Long out of Michigan solidified his status with a high 37 reps on the bench, tied with Ohio State pass rusher Vernon Gholston who pushed his stock up. However, Boston College's Matt Ryan may have hurt his stock with a poor showing during passing drills as he displayed some shoddy footwork and inaccuracy on deep balls.

2008 Round One Mock Draft
1. Oakland Raiders select OT Jake Long, Michigan
-Easy pick here, and the Raiders need protection for Jamarcus Russell (?) or whoever else plans on taking snaps for the Raiders. Long is the prototype left tackle. He has an excellent frame, with room to potentially add more bulk. He is a good athlete that slides well laterally in pass protection and can adjust to athletic edge rushers. In the running game, he shows the ability to drive people off the ball, and the ability to block on the move.
2. Cleveland Browns select HB Darren McFadden, Arkansas
-The top tailback in this draft, and perchance the past decade? McFadden is the total package. He has excellent size, speed, hands, and athleticism. He is a willing interior runner, and will not be brought down by the first defender. Once a hole opens up, he hits it and is in the open field ready for a big play. What makes McFadden special is that he is a game-breaker, along with being a guy that can pound it between the tackles. He has the speed to get to the outside, and the speed to outrun defensive backs. This would be a solid choice for Leslie Frazier's Browns.
3. New York Jets select QB Matt Ryan, Boston College
-Some analysts are switching up their QB rankings and placing Flacco ahead of Ryan on their charts. Ryan has all the tools and intangibles necessary to build around as a franchise QB. The Jets parted ways with a former first-round pick in Chad Pennington this offseason and would be negligent in leaving the team to Kellen Clemens. Ryan is the safe bet here. He may not have the physical tools of an Andre Woodson or Brian Brohm, but he may be better where it counts, which is in his ability to lead his team. His arm, athleticism, and mobility are all solid, but nothing jumps out at you. Ryan has built on a quality senior year and cemented his stock as the top QB in the draft, and a top-five selection.
4. New York Giants select DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU
-The Giants can use a few improvements, but they can really shape their Coughlin defense with a power 1-tech player in Dorsey. Dorsey is an excellent tackle prospect that can flat out dominate games. He quickly comes off the line and can penetrate the backfield to disrupt plays consistently.
5. Baltimore Ravens select QB Brian Brohm, Louisville
-Delaware's Joe Flacco is an option here as well, but Brohm has a better pedigree and is no stranger to a big stage. A highly touted recruit has impressed in his college career. Durability is definitely a concern and has definitely hurt his stock. Yet, Brohm has it all from a physical standpoint. He has a nice frame and is sturdy enough to sit in the pocket and take a hit. His arm is excellent, and he can make all the throws. He is also a good athlete with the mobility to elude the rush and buy more time. And truthfully, he is a better option than Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller, and Troy Smith.
6. Arizona Cardinals select DT Sedrick Ellis, USC
-Sedrick Ellis is a load in the middle of the defensive line. He is built like a tank and an immovable force. He has a low center of gravity and a thick frame overall. This would be a great addition to a growing Cardinals team.
7. Philadelphia Eagles select QB Joe Flacco, Delaware
-The departure of McNabb is a massive loss, and the team supposedly has faith in Kevin Kolb. But it would be incredibly negligent not to address the position with a quality, developmental QB. Flacco is the prototypical pocket passer. He has a cannon for an arm and has no problems delivering the ball on target on every type of throw, but due to his competition level, he may need some time to develop into a starting role.
8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers select CB Aqib Talib, Kansas
-With Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly moving past their prime, adding a young lockdown corner will go far for the Buccs. Talib is a big play defensive back. He has fantastic ball skills. He knows how to locate the ball in the air and has the ability to go up and make a play on the ball.
9. Tennessee Titans select WR Malcolm Kelly, USC
-Receivers have yet to separate themselves from each other, but Kelly is likely the best one of the bunch. He's been brave over the middle of the field, has great size at 6'4, and can run every route in the tree. Big add for Dom Capers if he wants to keep Vince Young developing.
10. Houston Texans select CB Antoine Cason, Arizona
-Getting a big-time playmaker on the other side of Dunta Robinson will elevate this defense. Cason has the ability to be a true shutdown corner. Not only does he have the athleticism, quickness, and ball skills, but he has the attitude of a top-tier corner. Cason will not back down from anyone, and loves are tested.
11. New Orleans Saints select LB Keith Rivers, USC
12. Chicago Bears select WR Limas Sweed, Texas
13. Buffalo Bills select CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy
14. Atlanta Falcons select OT Ryan Clady, Boise State
15. St. Louis Rams select DE Chris Long, Virginia
16. Green Bay Packers select CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee State
17. Dallas Cowboys select OT Jeff Otah, Pitt
18. Jacksonville Jaguars select CB Justin King, Penn State
19. Kansas City Chiefs select QB Chad Henne, Michigan
20. Cincinnati Bengals select DE Vernon Gholston, Ohio State
21. Chicago Bears (from Panthers) select S Kenny Phillips, Miami
22. New England Patriots (from Lions) select LB Jerod Mayo, Tennessee
23. Miami Dolphins select G Branden Albert, Virginia
24. Chargers select LB Dan Conner, Penn State
25. Pittsburgh Steelers select WR DeSean Jackson, California
26. San Francisco 49ers select DE Calais Campbell, Miami
27. Denver Broncos select S Reggie Smith, Oklahoma
28. Minnesota Vikings select WR James Hardy, Indiana
29. Indianapolis Colts select DT Kentwan Balmer, North Carolina
30. Washington Redskins select OT Chris Williams, Vanderbilt
31. Seattle Seahawks select RB Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois
32. New England Patriots select RB Chris Johnson, East Carolina

Absolutely, and the best part is now we'll see how they have their careers differ. Maybe now Brohm becomes a star QB while a Flacco or Matt Ryan underperforms.
