Dolphins 2007-08 Early Offseason Key Points
Image
Departure of Dom Capers
Coach Capers led the Dolphins to be one of top defenses with regards to sacks and turnovers. It wasn't a complete surprise to seem him jump at another head coaching job since his last stint as the Texans first head coach. He also had aspirations for the Dolphins job after Saban's departure. Little change is expected for next season as the team elected to promote linebackers coach George Edwards instead of recruiting outside help. He's been with the team since 2005 and has had prior coordinator experience as Washington's DC in 2003. Former Jets defensive coordinator Bob Sutton has also joined the staff, replacing Edwards as linebackers coach.

Trent Green's Retirement and the Future at Quarterback
Green was a bandaid solution, but he kept the offense afloat in the team's run to the playoffs. That leaves last year's second-round pick John Beck, Cleo Lemon, Chris Leak who the team recently signed to a futures contract as the only QBs on roster. Lemon is unlikely to be retained, and Leak is a longshot to be a starter, and Beck has had the support of the front office publically. But despite Beck's solid flashes, the Phins would be remiss if they didn't add more to the quarterback room. Currently picking at 23, the odds of landing top QB prospects like Brian Brohm, Matt Ryan, or Joe Flacco would likely be low. One could fall to them, but other prospects like Michigan's Chad Henne or Oregon's Dennis Dixon are worth extended looks. They are also QB's on the trade market, namely San Francisco's former 1st round QB Alex Smith who has been made available.

Dolphins Cut Ties with DT Vonnie Holliday
The Phins shave about $7.50M on the cap with their releasing of veteran defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday, who has been with the team since 2005.

Zach Thomas Doesn't Retire, Agrees to One-Year Extension
After concerns as to whether he'd retire this offseason, veteran star linebacker Zach Thomas has agreed to a one=year extension worth nearly $10M. While keeping a key starter on defense is key, the team still needs to continue to add young talent to the roster.

NFL Pre-Free Agency Report

Eagles and McNabb Part Ways
Tensions rose between Eagles star quarterback Donovan McNabb and the Eagles front office and medical staff after he repeatedly requested not to be placed on IR after feeling he had been misdiagnosed with his season-ending injury. McNabb alleges it was the team's way of trying to play second round pick Kevin Kolb. After telling the team he wanted a trade, and the team unable to find a trade partner, the Eagles have announced that they are moving on from McNabb. He now becomes on of the most interesting free agents available.

Dolphins Trade for 49ers QB Alex Smith
Image
Smith Adds Needed Competition to Quarterback Position
The Miami Dolphins sent over their third and sixth-round picks in the upcoming draft for the former number one overall pick Alex Smith and the 49ers sixth-round pick. The trade also includes a conditional pick for the 49ers in 2009 with undisclosed stipulations. This move comes on the heels of Trent Green announcing his retirement from pro football, and Miami declining to extend back-up quarterback Cleo Lemon.

Smith's career has been a bit of a rollercoaster, with seemingly more lows than highs. Entering 2007 in competition with veteran passer Trent Dilfer, Smith saw very minimal time as Dilfer posted career numbers and kept the young QB on the bench. And when Dilfer was injured, the team elected to see Koy Detmer lead the offense as opposed to Alex Smith, who was working with his third offensive coordinator in three seasons.

About mid-way through the season, rumors began the swirl that the 49ers front office was prepared to move on from Smith this offseason. General manager Scot McCloughan confirmed the reports and announced that Smith and the organization had decided it was time to find him a new home in the NFL.

The former Utah standout will now be slated to compete against another young, Utah-based product in BYU's John Beck, who had solid flashes in his few appearances in relief of Trent Green last year. And this move seemingly takes the Dolphins out of the quarterback market, despite them having interest in former Jets QB Chad Pennington and former Eagles QB Donovan McNabb in free agency.

In his career so far, Alex Smith has totaled: a 68.2 QB rating, 4,613 yards, 19 touchdowns, 29 interceptions, and a 56.2% completion percentage.

Got one hell of a game-manager in Alex Smith. Time to build.
