Schedule Release and Season Preview

As stated at the end of our spring coverage, this season looks to be a challenging one for the 49ers. They are the youngest team in the FBS.
Looking over the schedule and according to Vegas, the only games the 49ers have a chance in are Week 1 at Akron and Weeks 13 and 14 against James Madison
and Coastal Carolina, who also made the FBS leap this year.

The biggest tests come in weeks 3 & 5 the 49ers face their biggest challenges of the year against NC State and Miami (FL). Both games are on the road and
we'll see how well new offensive coordinator Michael Doctor's scheme works against top level competition.

Conference Outlook

Vegas has Charlotte finishing at the bottom of the conference standings. They are also the favorites to land as the independent team this year.
East Carolina is the favorite to win the conference with Florida Atlantic and Buffalo as the lead challengers. Connecticut and Florida International are expected to also
make a run for the conference.

HB Alan Barnwell and Terrence Winchester have been named to the pre-season all-conference first team, while QB Matt Johnson, RG Daniel Blutch, RE James Middleton
and SS Martay Mattox were named to pre-season all-conference second team.

National Outlook

Clemson QB Trevor Lawerence and Ohio State QB Justin Fields lead the Heisman race with Alabama RB Najee Harris, Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard
and LSU WR Ja'Marr CHase just behind them.

The top five teams in the country are Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and LSU. The SEC looks to be a battle this year. While Clemson should repeat as
ACC champions. Ohio State is the favorite in the Big 10, Oklahoma in the Big 12 and Oregon is the overwhelming favorite in the Pac 12. On the relegation side of things,
Temple and Syracuse are the favorites to be relegated in the ACC, Kansas and North Texas in the Big 12, Rutgers and Illinois in the Big 10, Colorado and
Hawaii in the Pac-12 and Arkansas State and Vanderbilt in the SEC. College Football has added not only a great championship race but now even the bottom
feeder teams will look to fight.

Stay tuned for our Week 1 preview for the 49ers at Akron.

Game Preview: Week 1 @ Akron

Like the start of every new season, week 1 is the great unknown. The team spends all spring and all summer camp hitting each other.
It isn't until week 1, where you finally get to take out camp frustrations on another team. This year Charlotte gets to start the year
off with a team on their level. Usually a team like Charlotte gets to open the season with a powerhouse and a nice check from them. This year
that isn't until week 3. The 49ers get to test their merit against the Zips of Akron in Akron. While opening on the road is never easy, this game
is winnable for the 49ers

On offense the Zips QB Kato Nelson leads the way with two very talented receivers in Nate Stewart and Andre Williams Jr. The passing attack is lethal
when Akron's offensive line gives Nelson time to throw. That's where the 49er defense can make a difference. Akron's offensive line isn't the strongest out
there. If the 49er defense can get the Zips passing game off it's groove and force them to run the ball, Charlotte has a chance to win the game. The Akron
run game isn't the strongest and it plays into the 49ers' defense strength.

Defensively the Zips have a solid secondary. Passing on either of their corners Randy Cochran Jr or Jalen Hooks will only be bad news for the Charlotte offense.
The Akron defensive line isn't the strongest in the world either. If 49ers want to run they should be able to. While the defensive line isn't the best, their linebackers
can make plays. It all depends if Charlotte QB Matt Johnson can make the big pass plays when they are set up.

Prediction:

I think this will be a telling game for how the season will go for the 49ers. Ultimately I think it will be a hard fought game but the 49ers will come up short.
Score prediction 28-17 Zips.

Akron's Key Players:

Offense
QB Kato Nelson
WR Nate Stewart
WR Andre Williams Jr.

Defense
FS Woobeny Guerrier
CB Randy Cochran Jr.
CB Jalen Hooks

Akron will be tough to start with since they grade out a bit better than your team. Hopefully you start with a bang, though.

Charlotte Blasts Akron in Season Debut
It started with a bang, Austin Duke returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. 102 yards and the 49ers were on the board. The defense stepped up big
in early on forcing Akron to two, three and outs to start off the game. The offense rewarded them with two touchdowns. One by RB Alan Barnwell which capped off
a grind it out first opening drive where the 49ers pounded the ball. The lead was 13-0 49ers. The Zips answered back quickly making it 13-7. New offensive coordinator
Michael Doctor drew up the perfect play action to get the defense to bite. Matt Johnson hit a wide open Will Thomas for an NCAA record 84 yard touchdown pass, 20-7 Charlotte.

Akron wouldn't back down they capped off a nice drive to start the second quarter with a Cole Gest 4 yard touchdown, 20-14. The 49ers would score again, off a
3 yard run by Barnwell for his second score of the night. 27-14. The Zips would then grind the clock inside of two minutes and grab another touchdown, this one by
back up running back Teon Dollard, 27-21. With 90 seconds left in the half Matt Johnson would hit Austin Duke for a big gain and then Will Thomas. A failed run play
to catch Akron off guard, forced Charlotte to kick a FG and they did as time expired, 30-21 49ers at half.

Akron would kickoff the second half with their own 102 yard kickoff return for touchdown by Junior WR Jeremiah Knight making it a 2 point game, 30-28. This is where Charlotte stepped up.
You could feel how tense the sideline was with their lead now just two points. One costly turnover and they could be down in a game which their offense was clicking
all night. That wasn't the case though. This team led by mostly freshmen and sophomores never backed down and the guy who was the driving force was running back
Alan Barnwell. He busted a 56 yard run to bust the game open giving the 49ers the lead 37-28. After another stop by the 49er defense who played very well tonight.
The offense forced their way down the field capping the drive off with a short 3 yard slant from Johnson to Thomas for the second time in the game. After a failed two
point conversion. That score would give the 49ers their first victory in the FBS, 43-28.

The start of the fourth quarter was Akron's chance to get back in the game. They picked up two key third downs getting to first and goal from the 8 yard line.
The Charlotte defense stepped up and forced Akron to go for it on 4th down and the 49er defense then forced the incompletion to give the ball back to the offense.
The offense made a clock killing drive. The offense ran the ball down Akron's throat all game and QB Matt Johnson started out the game 9 for 9 passing.
The offense really clicked on all cylinders.

The Doctor Is In:

This is a special interview in every post game show with offensive coordinator Michael Doctor

Q: Did you expect this performance from your young offense tonight?

Coach Doctor: No, I didn't. We really need to give our offensive line and shout out, they played great tonight. Opening up holes to run through and giving Matt (Johnson)
the time he needed to throw. I'm really proud of those young men

Q: What did you see in their defense to keep handing the ball off?

Coach Doctor: Akron has a tremendous pass defense, we took what they gave us. The way their linebackers were setting up all night matched up with our blocking schemes.
Our guys did a great job blocking and Alan (Barnwell) hit the hole hard. That kid (Barnwell) is going to be a stud if he keeps this up. We'll count on him all year.

Q: You guys have a bye week next week then a big home opener vs NC State, Are you looking forward to that game?

Coach Doctor: Honestly, I'm just going to enjoy this win tonight with the guys on the plane trip home, then on monday morning the film study for NC State will start.

Thanks Coach and congratulations on the first victory of the year.

Coach Doctor: Thank you, have a good one

Thanks! I was shocked, cause i started the game and accidentally hit the sim until on field and when i got on the field we were up 7 nothing. I had to check what happened. From there I watched as the defense did it's thing. I have a feeling NC State is going to man handle us though. Akron's OL and DL were not that good.

Around The Nation
*Author note: Around the Nation, Around the Conference and Recruiting updates happen every 2 weeks

Top 25

Image

Some big upsets this week, Notre Dame beat Oklahoma 24-7 and Tennessee shocks oregon 35-24. The top 4 spots remain the same.
Early on we don't see too much movement in the polls. The only new team is Tennessee. UCF who was #21 who lost to Penn State 22-17.

The Race for the Heisman

Image

Our race is still early on and all 5 top candidates have stayed the same. After we should see more movement after week 4.
Right now Lawrence and Fields are the leaders of the pack.

UCONN 2-0
Florida International 1-0

Game Preview: Week 3 vs NC State

It's hard to win after a big game, and while calling a win at Akron a big game seems farfetched in Charlotte's case it is.
No one was expecting a 49ers win two weeks ago. This week the 49ers host conference affliate NC State. This game will not be easy
in any way. The Wolfpack out classes Charlotte at every position. Hell there aren't a lot of Charlotte's starters who could be backups
in Raliegh.

On offense NC State will be missing starting QB Devin Leary, redshirt sophomore Ty Evans is expected to take his place. We don't know much
about Evans. We do know he went 3/4 for 38 yards in their only game after Leary went down. NC State will look to have a balanced attack.
Though with Leary out, I expect them to run more. RB Zach Knight is a quick back who hits the hole well and can break one big at any moment.
On the outside Evans will count on wide receivers Emeka Emezie and Thayer Thomas as well as TE Cary Angeline. NC State's offensive line is
big and strong. They should protect Evans well. Charlotte's defense has their work cut out for them. The young secondary will be tested and
it will be up to the linebackers to make big plays.

On defense the Wolfpack are led by their linebacking corps, MLB Isaiah Moore and OLB Louis Acceus and Payton Wilson. They aren't the fastest corps
Charlotte will face all year but they are sure tacklers. In the secondary with FS Tanner Ingle out, NC State can be tested. They have solid corners
but the rest of the secondary isn't daunting. The defensive line has some dawgs on it. DT Alim McNeill and Defensive Ends Daniel Joseph and Val Martin
can all get to the QB. They are also pretty good at stuffing the run only giving up 98 yards last week. The 49er offense is going to have to execute
near perfectly if they want any shot at winning this game.

Prediction

I don't see this one being pretty, unfortunately. 42-7 Wolfpack

Key Players

Offense:
HB Zach Knight
WR Emeka Emezie
TE Cary Angeline

Defense:
MLB Isaiah Moore
OLB Louis Acceus
OLB Payton Wilson
