Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots
Wave the white flag! Steelers routed by Pats, 26-7
Cam Newton shines in his Patriot debut with 4 total touchdowns as New England stifles Pittsburgh in season opener
Foxborough, Mass. -- The first game of the 2020 season is officially in the books – and for Pittsburgh, their first loss.
New England quarterback Cam Newton was the star of the show. Newton didn't waste any time making Patriot fans forget all about their former quarterback in his debut throwing for 359 yards and three touchdowns, as well as adding another one on the ground for four total. He accounted for all of New England's scores, and while their rookie kicker missed two PAT's – Newton did receive more than enough help from this team's defense.
It was an ugly return to the gridiron for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, as the aforementioned Patriots defense picked off Big Ben four times and held him to just 176 passing yards on 15 completed passes.
"We couldn't get much going tonight, obviously you can tell that by looking at the stat book," said Roethlisberger.
When asked about the elbow injury that sidelined the Pittsburgh slinger for all but two games last season, Roethlisberger brushed it off and claimed that the injury was fully healed and had no impact on tonight's struggles.
Star WR JuJu Smith-Schuster caught just one pass in the game in which he took to the house for a 50 yard score. However, he ended with more drops than catches after being shadowed by lockdown corner Stephon Gilmore all night. Gilmore wasn't the only pest on defense though. Dont'a Hightower completely stifled the Steelers offense in the run game, as well as the passing game. He recorded team-highs of 6 tackles and 2 interceptions, as well as pitching in with a sack and was a huge component of why James Conner and the Steelers rushing attack was nonexistent in this one.
"We've got a lot of work to do," said Mike Perry, Pittsburgh's new general manager. "That wasn't pretty – and I know New England is a good team – but we need to be better and I need to help Mike [Tomlin] get the players and assets he needs to win ball games."
INJURY UPDATE
Pittsburgh's star free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick left the game early in the third quarter with what appeared to be an arm related injury. Team doctors should have a diagnosis within a couple of days, but anything serious would be a huge blow to the team's defensive unit.
The Steelers return to Heinz Field next week for their home opener to face off against the Seattle Seahawks and their newest addition, safety Jamal Adams.

Sheesh, losing Minkah is HUGE.
How do you expect to fare with that?

Not sure yet tbh. He's one of the main reasons I chose to run with the Steelers, so it's pretty shitty losing him for the year.Captain Canada wrote: ↑31 Jul 2020, 12:03Sheesh, losing Minkah is HUGE.

Steelers (0-1) open at home in week two against Seattle Seahawks (1-0)
Luke McCafferty | September 14, 2020 4:30 pm ET
Week one was a struggle – to say the least – for the visiting Steelers as they marched into New England only to get walloped by the Cam Newton-led Patriots 26-7. Not only did the Steelers lose the game, but the team lost star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to a season-ending shoulder injury. Taking his place in week two will be Jordan Dangerfield.
"I think he'll be ready to step up," says coach Mike Tomlin. Only time will tell if he's right.
The visiting Seahawks are coming off a 13-10 win in week one against the Bengals and look to build upon that performance. It will be Pittsburgh's first look at Seattle's newest defensive leader Jamal Adams, who recorded a team high 5 tackles, as well as an interception in his first game with his new team.
On offense, Seattle’s star QB Russell Wilson suffered an injury scare and was pulled from the game after just 10 pass attempts. He’s questionable, but if back on the field, he’ll be looking to make an impact.
After week one, the Steelers are averaging 7.0 points, which is 30th in the league, while the Seahawks are not far ahead with 13.0 points, which ranks 24th.
Odds: Seahawks -3.5

A win over a shaky Russell Wilson would be excellent. Good luck in Week 2
