Los Angeles name rookie Justin Herbert as their starting quarterback
nfl.com/chargers/morningcoffee | August 24th, 2020

The new era has officially started in Los Angeles. After 14 years of Philip Rivers and the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers perennially meaning underachieving with postseason absences or one and dones, the Chargers will now look for Justin Herbert to right the ship and return them to the Super Bowl, something they haven't been too since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers embarrassed them almost two decades ago. Coach Anthony Lynn called it the hardest decision he's had to make in his coaching career. Do you start the experienced veteran and when things go wrong, bring in the rookie for a spark or, do you let the rookie experience growing pains, a possible benching and hopefully a redemption down the line.

The Chargers have made their decision, which makes the week one encounter against hosts Cincinnati all that more interesting and exciting. The Bengals will be fielding the #1 overall selection, Joe Burrow. The Chargers will be fielding the #6 overall selection and a defense which ranked 6th in the NFL last season. The Chargers will go into the game as favourites but can the Chargers do enough on offense to complement a defense which will be licking their lips and surely to force the former LSU Tiger into mistakes?

derwin is what i thought ray ray armstrong was going to turn into back when he was at miami.
for me, Derwin James has the possibility to be as good as Earl Thomas - not as good as Ed Reed or Troy though.

I like the photo above, because he has no mouthguard, just like in Madden 21

Herbert leads Chargers to victory over Bengals, earns first career win on debut

Image

In the battle of the first round rookies, Justin Herbert earned the spoils as being the victor in his first NFL game. It almost wasn’t to be, after his ill-thrown pass soared over Hunter Henry into the arms of William Jackson on the 50-yard line with 2:30 remaining. Moments later, the flag was thrown onto the field after Geno Atkins recklessly got into the face of Herbert and drew a 15-yard roughing the passer call, which sent the Chargers to the Bengals’ 35 yard line. A few players later, Herbert found Hunter in the back of the endzone for a touchdown winning pass.

The flag may be the talk of the week in Cincinnati, but Joe Burrow’s two costly fourth quarter mistakes shouldn’t go unnoticed. He threw very well against a Chargers secondary which is top rated in the league and came out confused and played disappointingly. Their run game did not. With 7:26 remaining in the game, Joe Burrow was sacked for the third time by Jerry Tillery on the afternoon. The ball came loose and Los Angeles recovered, preserving their 16-13 lead. On Cincinnati’s next drive, Joe Burrow took off on 1st and 10 and began to run down the middle of the open field. In came rookie Kenneth Murray to deliver a crushing hit, dislodging the ball back into LA’s possession. Los Angeles took over, the interception was called back and they went down the field and put the game away. Talk about mistakes biting your butt. Welcome to the NFL, Joe Burrow.

Seemed like a defensive struggle the whole time.

Way to come out on top in Week 1.

Is it more Herbert is better than Taylor in your eyes or "might as well get Herbert the experience to make him better sooner than later"

Also damn defense, welcoming Joe Burrow to the NFL like a bunch of goons.

Gonna be tough to keep up with Kansas City but LA could easily get the Wild Card this season (I think Herbert will struggle irl but there's a bunch of other random variables they gotta deal with)

@both of you... I was very disappointing in my D... gave away too many short and mid yardage catches to the outside... didn't give up any long throws though

I wanted to start Herbert. I like Tyrod though.

If the D performed how they did against Cincinnati (minus the 2 stops in the 4th) i'm going to get clapped by the Chiefs.
