Raiders double up at linebacker in round one



Most people expected the Raiders to pick a linebacker with one of their first round selections (12th and 13th) last night. As for the other most suspected a wide receiver would be the obvious choice. When Minnesota took Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons with the fourth pick Mike Mayock didn't panic.

"We had a plan, we stuck to it and got our guys." Mayock explained.

Las Vegas stayed put, resisting the lure of a trade up. When they got on the clock Kenneth Murray and Patrick Queen were both still available.

"We had them neck and neck." Mayock said when asked to rank Murray and Queen. "There were some receivers and other guys that we were excited about and there was a lot of discussion about trading one of the picks down but ultimately we felt taking them both was the right move."

With Murray and Queen joining free agent acquisition Blake Martinez the Raiders linebacker room will look a lot different in 2020 and hopefully go from a weakness to a strength for the team.

Raiders go "best player available", grab Edwards-Helaire with 76th pick



With Josh Jacobs and Marshawn Lynch in the fold runningback wasn't a position of dire need for the Raiders but with Isaiah Crowell, Jalen Richard, Bo Scarborough and DeAndre Washington all leaving in the offseason some depth was needed.

"We didn't have him on our radar really." Raiders GM Mike Mayock told us. "We expected him to be gone before we picked again. We had a late first to early second grade on him. We were excited to see him still there when our pick started getting closer and there was very little hesitation to make the pick."

Edwards-Helaire ran for 1,414 yards and 16 scores last season at LSU, averaging 6.6 yards per carry. He caught 55 passes for 453 yards and a score as well. He also averaged 21.9 yards per kick return over his three seasons at LSU.

Edwards-Helaire joins LSU teammate Patrick Queen, who the Raiders took in the first round.

Raiders stick with LSU, pick guard Lewis with 77th pick



LSU had a dream season in 2019 and now their former players are being highly sought after in the NFL draft.

The Raiders have picked four players so far and with guard Damien Lewis they now have taken LSU players with three of those picks.

"Another player we were excited to have drop to us." Mike Mayock explained.

Lewis will likely be the primary backup for the interior offensive line this season and could take over for Rodney Hudson or Richie Incognito in 2021.
