New Orleans dominates in victory with two defensive touchdowns
NEW ORLEANS, November 15 -- The New Orleans Saints showed how balanced they are as a team, as the defense scored two touchdowns to help an offense which just never showed any life in their 40-7 demolition over last season's NFC Champion. David Onyemata recorded two sacks and Trey Hendrickson came through with 2.5 sacks as Nick Mullens faced relentless pressure as Telvin Coleman's lone touchdown in the second quarter was the only spark the 49ers had on offense all game. Kwon Alexander, who was recently traded to New Orleans from San Francisco, led the team with 12 tackles while Marson Lattimore was dominant on defense with two interceptions. Whenever New Orleans needed a stop, they came through with one. The 49ers turned the ball over 6 times, went 6 of 15 on third downs and could only accumulate 260 yards of offense. One of the unsung heroes on the New Orleans defense today was safety Marcus Williams, who forced the first interception by batting the ball towards Marshon Lattimore.
New Orleans was disappointing on offense. Despite the high completion rate, Drew Brees threw two early interceptions before coming good on leading the team to three touchdowns. Alvin Kamara was held in check, although he cut back across the field for an 11 yard touchdown in the second quarter to give the Saints a lead they would never relinquish. Michael Thomas and Tre'Quan Smith added receiving touchdowns in the second half to force the blowout. New Orleans achieved just 290 yards in the game, but that was due to a defense which put them in good field positions with their takeaways and Deonte Harris, whose 34 yard punt return gave them short field position on Michael Thomas' touchdown drive.
