SOPHOMORE QB TANNER DAVIDSON CELEBRATES A FIRST DOWN RUN

By: Nathan Thompson, FOX23 Sports
Updated: September 26, 2014 - 7:48 PM

After an injury sidelined Union star quarterback Tommy Matthews just before halftime against Putnam City North sophomore Tanner Davidson was pressed into duty. With his team down 13-0 Davidson led out the offense to start the third quarter. After nearly throwing an interception on his first pass attempt Davidson tucked the ball and ran for a gain of 20 yards on his second snap, taking a big hit from a Putnam defender. Davidson popped up and signaled a first down. From there he appeared to settle in, completing a 25 yard pass to De'Andre Patton on the next play.

A couple plays later Davidson connected with Dillon Zombo for a 30 yard touchdown on a perfectly placed pass down the left sideline.

After the Union defense recorded a safety Davidson put them on top late in the third quarter with a five yard touchdown run.

Davidson hit Patton for a five yard score on a slant early in the fourth quarter to make it 23-13 Union.

Putnam City cut into the lead on their next possession When Caesar King scored on a 17 yard jet sweep.

Union answered that with a six yard touchdown run by Sammy Hawk to make it 30-20 Union. After a turnover on downs by Putnam City Union leaned on Hawk and Johathan Ruggins to run out the clock.

Davidson finished the game with 127 yards passing with two touchdowns and 64 yards rushing and a touchdown. Hawk ran for 136 yards and a score. Matthews had strugled before leaving after the injury, completing just two passes for 23 yards and throwing an interception.

Union is now 3-1 following the win and they will host Norman North next week.

Cool. I'm trying to manipulate FOF to tell my story. I think it will be pretty good. Thanks for checking in.

Union star QB Tanner Davidson will be staying in state after committing to Oklahoma yesterday afternoon.

Davidson is ranked as the #3 recruit in the nation and the top player in the state.

After taking over for injured Union starter Tommy Matthews as a sophomore Davidson led Union to back-to-back playoff appearances as a sophomore and a junior, falling to eventual state champs Jenks last season.

As a junior Davidson threw for 3,463 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions, completing 64% of his passes. He also ran for 732 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Davidson's Rivals profile:

Davidson's profile has him listed at 6'5" and 215 pounds but he hasn't been measured since the end of his sophomore year, Coach Cooks thinks he could be over 225 now.

A three sport star Davidson currently leads the Union basketball team in points per game and is expected to be the baseball team's top pitcher.

Davidson will likely redshirt in 2017 if Baker Mayfield stays then compete with Kyler Murray, who transferred from Texas A&M last month, in 2018.

Davidson's kept his announcement brief on social media, stating that he was ecstatic to have found his place at home in Oklahoma and that he had unfinished business at Union. He closed with the hashtag #revengeseason.

Union is expected to compete for a state championship this upcoming season.
