Union thrashes Derby to begin "Revenge Tour"

SENIOR QB TANNER DAVIDSON CELEBRATES A FIRST DOWN RUN EARLY IN A ROUT OF DERBY

By: Nathan Thompson, FOX23 Sports
Updated: August 26, 2016 - 11:18 PM

"The end of last season sucked." Union senior quarterback Tanner Davidson told me after the team's practice last Wednesday. "We're calling this season the revenge tour. We're not settling for anything less than a championship."

Union's 2015 season ended with a 33-17 semi final loss at Jenks, who went on to win their fourth straight 6A State Championship.

The so called "Revenge Tour" kicked off earlier tonight against Derby, the 2015 Kansas State champions, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, home of the NFL's Chiefs.

It was a star-studded affair with several NFL players, coaches and GMs on hand as well as other athletes and many from the entertainment industry on hand. Needless to say there were dozens of college scouts and coaches in attendance as well.

Davidson, who committed to Oklahoma in March, engaged in battles on social media with several members of the Derby team and other players from Kansas, escalating the game to a border war of sorts between the two states.

Davidson wasted no time asserting himself, connecting with tight end Maddox on a 73 yard touchdown on the fourth play of the game.

After the Union defense stopped Derby on fourth down Davidson connected with QB turned WR Tommy Matthews for a 48 yard gain down to the Derby 23. A couple plays later Matthews caught a tipped pass in the endzone to extend Union's early lead.

Derby cut into the lead on their next possession when runningback A.J. Grove capped a long drive with a two yard touchdown run.

After a short kick return Davidson accounted for all 83 yards on the ensuing Union drive, topping it off with a five yard TD run and putting Union up 21-7 just before halftime.

Ricky Southerland hit a 56 yard field goal for Derby in the third quarter, the only score of the quarter.

Davidson connected with Matthews for a seven yard score on a slant early in the fourth quarter, Union led 28-10 after the score.

That's when things went south for Derby as both of their next possessions ended with interceptions. Union capitalized on the turnovers, adding ten points via a Davidson to Zombo TD pass and a Myers 26 yard field goal, making the score 38-10 with just a few minutes left.

Davidson did not return to the game and drew some criticism as the following image was sent out on his social media accounts before the end of the game.

Davidson claimed the image was uploaded by a friend, no punishment has been announced at this time.

Union would add another score on a ten yard TD run by Sammy Hawk. Derby added a pointless late field goal, making the final score 45-13.

Davidson threw for over 350 yards with four touchdowns and ran in one more in the win. Hawk ran for 146 yards and a score. Matthews was Davidson's favorite target as he was most of last season after moving to wide receiver. He caught 7 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

After the final gun sounded Davidson and the rest of the team stormed the field and planted an Oklahoma state flag at midfield, causing a brawl to break out briefly.

Union will continue the "Revenge Tour" by hosting Broken Arrow next Friday night.

UNION SR QB TANNER DAVIDSON CELEBRATES AFTER A SCORE IN THEIR 35-6 BLOWOUT WIN OVER NORMAN NORTH

By: Nathan Thompson, FOX23 Sports
Updated: December 3, 2016 - 9:48 AM

“Mission accomplished!” Tanner Davidson shouted to the crowd as he came off the field late in the fourth quarter after Union took a 35-6 lead over Norman North in the 6A-I state championship game last night.

Davidson had scored on a draw up the middle from a yard out after setting up the score with a 27 yard run on the play before. With just over three minutes left to play the touchdown run was the final play of Davidson’s career at Union.

Norman North came into the game undefeated at 12-0 including a win over Union back in October. Union was 10-2 with losses to Jenks and Norman North.

Norman North snuck past Westmoore by a score of 42-40 in the quarterfinals then took down Mustang 68-42 in the semifinal. Union beat Broken Arrow 40-24 in the quarterfinals then got their revenge against Jenks, who beat them in the playoffs last season and again this season, by a score of 45-21 in the semifinal.

Norman North was favored by most in the State Championship game.

Union took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Davidson connected with Zombo on a 16 yard touchdown pass. Norman North cut it to 7-3 in the second quarter via a 35 yard field goal by Thomas Dray.

On Union’s ensuing possession Davidson and the offense answered when Davidson found Fuller for a 32 yard score, Fuller outleapt a defender to secure the score.

Union’s defense continued to shut down the Norman North offense, stopping them on downs and allowing Davidson and the offense to score again just before halftime with Davidson hooking up with tight end Maddox for a 41 yard score.

After a solid kick return to start the second half Davidson ran for a gain of 14 down to the Norman North 38 yard line and from there runningback Sammy Hawk took a toss 38 yards for a score, giving Union a 28-3 lead.

Leading 28-6 in the fourth quarter with about five minutes to play Union put the game away with Davidson’s short rushing touchdown. Davidson celebrated the touchdown by pouring himself a drink from the football, nearly drawing a flag from officials before Hawk and Maddox escorted him from the field.

“Mission accomplished!” Davidson bellowed toward the crowd while perched atop the bench.

Union’s defense picked off a Norman North pass and Ruggins carried the ball five times to run out the clock.

For Union it is their first championship since 2011 and their eighth overall.

Davidson has committed to Oklahoma and is expected to enroll early.

Davidson finished the game nearly perfect, completing 24 of 26 passes for 376 yards and three scores, he also ran nine times for 87 yards and a touchdown. Hawk carried 21 times for 158 yards and a touchdown. Matthews led all receivers with 12 receptions for 161 yards. Zombo (4 receptions, 38 yards, 1 touchdown), Fuller (2/41 1TD) and Maddox (3/82 1TD) all contributed as well.

Tanner Davidson has flipped his commitment to USC
Lincoln Riley blames Snoop Dogg

Former Oklahoma commit QB Tanner Davidson, the number 3 ranked recruit in the 2017 class has flipped his commitment to USC. Davidson posted the above picture on social media with a short explanation on why he switched. His reasons included feeling more at home at USC and feeling like it was a better place for him to further his career. He did mention regretting not getting to play for coach Stoops.

After the announcement OU offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley said he was pursuing an investigation into USC and Snoop Dogg for tampering with a recruit. Riley included the following picture in his statement.

This may end up being more of a blow to the recruiting department than to the actual on field product as the team has Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Tanner Schafer in the QB room for 2017.

Davidson will likely sit behind Sam Darnold this year before competing for the starting job at USC in 2018.

Back in my day 6A wasn't split. Did you purposely use these high schools to bait me into being interested?

No but I hoped you would be. I did see the 6A wasn't split before too. Thought the Oklahoma storyline would be fun. I wish there was more to do in high school but unfortunately that's a wrap on that phase. We're on to USC.
