Lakers Team and Season Preview
EL SEGUNDO -- Order has been restored with this glamour franchise. With LeBron James somehow denying Father Time and Anthony Davis somehow staying healthy, the Lakers are back in the business of being a contender.
Offseason Activity
- Austin Reaves had an amazing summer, headlined by getting a fat contract extension and making Team USA for the FIBA World Cup, which can only build his confidence even more.
- The Lakers added Gabe Vincent, Christian Wood, Jaxson Hayes and Taurean Prince and all should be solid rotational players.
- Jalen Hood-Schifino was taken in the first round, but with depth suddenly a strength with the Lakers, he might be stashed in player development.
The Lakers have seven key rotational players that will be free agents in 2024:
- Max Christie (restricted)
- Scotty Pippen Jr. (restricted)
- Taurean Prince
- Jaxson Hayes (player)
- Cam Reddish (player)
- D’Angelo Russell
- Christian Wood (player)
The starting unit is still up in the air and could change on a nightly basis, according to head coach Darvin Ham. However, the mainstays of the lineup should include D'Angelo Russell, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis – barring injuries – with a rotation of Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Christian Wood as other possible candidates (at least to start the season).
Depth is something that this version of the Lakers hope to see as a strength. On the wings, Cam Reddish, Taurean Prince, and Max Christie are all capable to provide meaningful minutes, while Gabe Vincent is a guard who can step in and make plays for himself and others at a really high clip off the bench.
Projected Starting Lineup Breakdown
LeBron James needs no introduction. Arguably the greatest player in the history of the game and somehow remains to keep slaying 'Father Time'. He's looking to be in great physical health after a rough year last season. If he stays healthy, he'll be a top-10 player in the league again and the face of the franchise.
Jarred Vanderbilt is expected to slide in at the forward spot opposite of James. Vanderbilt is a versatile hybrid-forward who can play defense at a really high level, as well as pull down rebounds. He's also a threat to hit the open three, though he won't be expected to score more than 10 points on a consistent basis, which is why he's expected to mesh better with the starters, while guys like Rui Hachimura and Christian Wood can lead the scoring of the second unit.
With Anthony Davis, the concern is always is health. When he's healthy, much like LeBron, he can be a top- five-to-10 player in the league. His only weakness is injury frequency. James has noted that AD should actually be the face of the franchise moving forward, so that will be an interesting story line to keep an eye on.
Austin Reaves really broke out last season and then put on a show in summer play. He was rewarded with a hefty contract extension -- impressive for an undrafted player. Last season, Reaves averaged 13 points and just under 40% from three. He will be a perfect off-ball fit next to D'Angelo Russell and LeBron James.
Point guard duties will be handled by D'Angelo Russell, a fan favorite. He's a crafty play maker and slides in as the third option of the three-headed monster, alongside LeBron and AD. Don't sleep on D'Lo, though -- he can pour in the buckets in a hurry and may be the most dependable of the three to stay on the court for the duration of the season.

THIS WEEK IN L.A. -- It starting to feel like deja vu in L.A. as the Lakers dropped its first three games to start the season, which is looking to be an eerily similar start to last season when the team started 0-5 before notching a win, and then dropping to 2-10.
"No, I'm not worried," said head coach Darvin Ham. "We've played some really good teams this week – and our team is really good – but we're still figuring out rotations and who should be playing with who. I played in the league and it helped me knowing that stuff, so I got to do a better job at that, too."
The Lakers were close against Phoenix, even though they were missing Bradley Beal. And they did trade the lead back-and-forth in Sacramento all the way up until the final minutes of the game, so while it's not the start the Lakers wanted, they shouldn't be concerned just yet.

| Mayfield Looks Sharp in Preseason Loss to Steelers, 27-17
The Buccaneers fell to the Steelers, 27-17, in the 2023 preseason opener
Baker Mayfield is expected to win the preseason starting quarterback battle over Kyle Trask.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-17, in preseason Week One. Self-inflicted wounds solidified the outcome of the Bucs' preseason opener. Tampa Bay was penalized three times for 20 yards in the first two drives, putting the club behind the chains.
However, early in the second quarter, the Bucs struck. Baker Mayfield hit rookie Trey Palmer in the back corner of the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown.
Through the first three series, Mayfield went eight-of-nine for 41 yards and a touchdown before calling it a day.
“He was composed, did a good job of commanding the offense,” Bowles said of the No. 1 overall pick from the 2018 draft. “He made the plays he needed to make.”
Kyle Trask took over in the second quarter but was not able to find the end zone. He was intercepted by Steelers' Trenton Thompson and concluded his night by completing six-of-10 passes for 99 yards.
The Buccaneers went scoreless in the third quarter, while Pittsburgh put up 10, courtesy of a 67-yard touchdown bomb from Mason Rudolph to Calvin Austin and a B.T. Potter 43-yard field goal.
The Bucs had a last-ditch touchdown just under the two-minute warning as John Wolford hit Payne Durham for a four-yard touchdown. However, it wasn't enough as there were just too many miscues early on that sealed the Bucs' fate in preseason Week One.

RAPID REACTIONS
- Without Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and starting running back Rachaad White, Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask worked with the same supporting cast on offense, providing a thorough evaluation process. Mayfield outperformed Trask.
- Linebacker Cam Gill raised his stock this week. He tallied one sack and split another one. In his first action since suffering a season-ending Lisfranc injury in the 2022 preseason opener, he played really well. Gill is competing with third-round pick Yaya Diaby and sixth-round pick Jose Ramirez for backup duty.
- Wide receiver depth looks like a tight battle! Rookie Trey Palmer, second-year wideouts Deven Thompkins and Kaylon Geiger, and veteran addition David Moore received extensive playing time during the first half. Palmer's speed was on full display during his touchdown catch. He continues to make a solid case for one of the remaining receiver spots on the depth chart behind Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Russell Gage Jr., along with second-year pro, Thompkins.
Thompkins finished the 2022 season as the club's primary return specialist and got the starting gig on punts/kickoffs on Friday night. He has impressed throughout camp, making sensational acrobatic catches with his small, 5-foot-8 frame.
- Many players were thrown into the mix during the offseason for the Bucs' impending slot corner battle. The role of a nickel corner in the NFL is a complex one, personifying the phrase "Swiss Army Knife." However, one name in particular is starting to gain traction, and that standout is undrafted free agent Christian Izien out of Rutgers.

Mahomes Injured in Chiefs Loss to Chargers
All was well in Kansas City as the Chiefs were matriculating down the football field with Patrick Mahomes completing two passes for 53 yards. And then Mahomes was sacked on back to back plays, getting injured on the last one and not returning.
The Los Angeles Chargers were then able to lock down on defense and let their offense go to work on their way to a 37-26 win.
The chest injury that Mahomes suffered is not expected to be a serious one. Neither is the thumb injury that Chargers QB Will Castonzo picked up as he scrambled for a first down in the third quarter. The Chargers called a timeout and Castonzo was able to return to the game and finish it off.
He completed 18 of 29 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown as well as registering his first 100-yard rushing game with 129 yards on the ground.
Chargers running back Derrick Henry made his Charger debut, rushing for 118 yards and the first touchdown of the game.
