"It was corrupt, there is no other way about it!" Mick Smith lashes out after Miami defeat

SN

MIAMI - Minnesota coach Mick Smith did not mix words Saturday night after his team lost in the downpour of Miami. "A great game between two great teams completely ruined by corrupt officials. You think it's a fumble, ok, then review it. Challenge it. I threw my flag to challenge, I knew Jalen [Smith] was down, it was obvious but instead of challenging if he was down, they challenged the spot of the damn ball!" Smith refused to discuss the rest of the game with reporters after, saying the focus had to be on the officials and the missed call that changed the game completely.

The play in question came in the fourth quarter, trailing 24-17, Minnesota was on the move and looked destined to score at least a field goal on the drive. Jalen Smith caught a short crossing route, passing the first down marker when the first wave of defenders hit him, after being held up by two defenders, a third defender came in to lay the final hit. The refs could have blown dead for forward progress, and nobody would have thought twice. Instead, Smith went down, the ball popping out and Miami recovered.

"Win or lose, you want to feel the result is fair. If we score on that drive, it's a different ballgame. Not taking anything away from Miami, they played great. But it feels cheated to have the ball literally taken out of your hands on something like that. In my mind, it was corrupt, there is no other way about it!"

That’s a rough way to lose after hanging in there against a team like Miami
