Blood, Sweat, and Most Definitely Tears
Two months before the draft
“How was everything with Stacy?”
“It was good, man. I survived the day. Thanks for hooking that up.”
“You’re my client. If you look good, I look better. The Portsmouth Invitational is next week. This is going to be the proving ground for you.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right about that. I’m about to be the biggest thing to come out of that thang since Jimmy Butler.”
“I like what I’m hearing. Keep working, Mo. Look, I’m about to head into a meeting, but I will catch up with you later.”
I hung up the phone and sat back in the Uber. Checking out the San Diego scenery. My agent, Tyler might actually be legit. He got me set up in an apartment near Venice Beach, I’m sharing with this kid from France, Axel Walden. His game is nice. We get along well enough. He always kept it a hundred with me. I knew I had work to do. I could have come out of Loyola Marymount two years ago, but I didn’t because my mom wanted me to earn my degree and ball was just a way to pay for that. Not to mention, the kneeling incident during my sophomore season when we played against Ole Miss. It got me a lot of attention, mostly negative, but there was some positive. A lot of NBA and NFL players tweeted their support. LeBron James among those.
Tyler got me set up with this trainer. She gets the best out of me. I don’t know if it’s because she’s a female, but she goes harder than anybody I have ever worked with. I have training program tailored for me. With Stacey and Tyler, I am sure to kill it at the invitational.
“You’re going to the NBA, man?” The driver asked. I nodded. “That’s pretty dope. You mind signing something for me? You know, for when you make it big."
I laughed and shook my head. “Sure, man. Just get me back to my apartment in one piece, okay? That autograph is definitely gonna be worth more than a tip.”
Present
I’m sitting in the locker room, lacing up my shoes for practice when our assistant coach, Chris, walks in.
“Listen up, rookies. Kobe is supposed to be stopping by practice today, so look sharp. Don’t get nervous.”
“Kobe? Like Bryant? Here?”
“You hard of hearing or something, man?” Jrue laughed. “Calm down and don’t mess up today.”
Two and half hours later, I found myself pacing the side of the court trying to get a few swallows of Gatorade.
“You need to work on looking off your player before making that pass. You’re damn near telegraphing it.”
“Thanks, Mr. Bryant.”
Kobe looked around and pointed at himself. “Mr. Bryant? That’s my father. Call me Kobe.”
“Cool. Thanks, Kobe.”
“I’ve been following your career, Mo. The sky is the limit for you. Just keep putting in that work. You put in work to get over that injury and get back on the court a few years back. And I saw some of your workouts that Stacy posted on Instagram this spring of you and your boy AW getting it in. You really busted your ass to get here. Makes you appreciate the shit more, right?”
“Thanks. Yeah it does.”
“You look like you could have a little bit of the Mamba Mentality. Just keep working. You need to start working out with Zion more.” He nodded to my teammate finishing up a press conference. “Y’all could be quite the duo out here.”
“Like you and Shaq.”
“You ain’t gon ever be that good.” He laughed. “But y’all could get close.”
“I got you. You think I could hit you up for some tips some time? Like as a mentor type thing?”
“Sure.”
Then he turns and walked away.
“You don’t even have my number!” I yelled across the gym.
“I have my ways.” He yelled back. “Mamba out.”
I went back to the locker room a little shocked and a little star struck. Kobe Bryant was willing to mentor me! That’s crazy. I had to hit up Tyler and tell him the news. I grabbed my phone from my locker and saw that I had a text from an unknown number.
There was only a snake and a basketball emoji. Then I saw the three dots at the bottom. I wait.
I told you I had my ways.
Before I could answer, Coach Finch walked in the locker room.
“Congrats, Mojo.”
“Thanks, I didn’t think he would reach out to me that fast.”
“You talked to Coach?”
“No. What are you talking about?”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“Kobe.”
“You can fangirl later. I was coming by to tell you that your time has come. Coach is putting you in the starting lineup.”
“Serious?”
“Yep. You got the spot tomorrow night. Make the most of. Shit can be gone quicker than you got it.”
“Right. Thanks, Coach.”
“Don’t thank me. Your blood, sweat and tears got you here.”
He patted my shoulder and left. “Congrats, kid.”
