A LATE INTERCEPTION BY DELMOND BOUDREAUX HELPED LOUISIANA SECURE A WIN
Alabama-Birmingham came to Lafayette and gave the Cajuns all they could handle in a 45-28 shootout win that was much closer than the final score indicated.

The Blazers brought a talented offense that put up 320 total yards and had a chance to take a late lead before Delmond Boudreaux picked off a deep pass with about two and a half minutes left in the game. Louisiana led by just seven points at the time but added a pair of late scores to make things seem more lopsided than they actually were.

Louisiana trailed 7-3 after the first quarter but put together a solid second quarter that included a pair of Jordan McAlary touchdown passes, first to Seth Palmero from 10 yards out then to tight end James Moody from the six yard line. UAB scored on a 41 yard Jeremiah Briscoe to Willie Miller pass in between the Louisiana scores and Jeffrey Yatkowski added his second field goal of the game from 37 yards out to make it 20-14 Cajuns at the break.

The Ragin' Cajuns added the only score of the third quarter on a McAlary touchdown pass to Justin Carter to extend their lead to 27-14.

UAB took a significant chunk out of that lead with a pair of touchdown drives early in the first quarter. Micheal McKinney scored on a short run for his second rushing touchdown of the day and after a McAlary interception Briscoe scored on an 11 yard option keep and the point after made it 28-27 Blazers with four and a half minutes left in the game.

McAlary then completed five of six pass attempts for 75 yards including a 24 yard touchdown pass to Palmero to retake the lead. McAlary connected with Carter for the two point conversion to put the Cajuns up 35-28 with three minutes left to play.

Briscoe connected with McKinney for a gain of six yard then threw the ball away on second down. Delmond Boudreaux then made a leaping interception on a deep pass down the right sideline and returned it to about the UAB 40 to set up a Yatkowski field goal which he nailed, putting Louisiana on top 38-28 with two minutes left.

Alabama-Birmingham then went four and out and Louisiana took over on the ten yard line. Two plays later D'Eriq Robinette ran in for an eight yard touchdown on an option keep and the final score was 45-28 Louisiana.91

"Great game, down to the wire and we made some late plays. We'll take it." Louisiana head coach Porter Davis said after the win.

Jordan McAlary completed 32 of 44 pass attempts for 361 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. The ground game was a bit more effective this week, totaling 67 yards including a pair of McAlary sacks that cost them 17 yards. Bryan Jones led the team with 49 yards on eight carries.

McAlary once again spread the ball around, connecting with nine different receivers and throwing touchdown passes to three. Mikey Porter Sr led the team with 80 yards on seven receptions. Carter had five for 79 and a score and Palmero caught seven for 76 and two scores.

Defensively the Cajuns gave up 320 total yards but made plays when needed. They sacked Briscoe five times total and Boudreaux's late interception helped put the game away.

Louisiana will travel to face LSU next week in a game that pits Porter Davis against former understudy Matt Limegrover.

MCCOLLUM PICKS OFF A RETTIG PASS
Louisiana quarterback Jordam McAlary's first pass attempt went through the hands of an LSU defender before falling harmlessly to the turf, unfortunately for the redshirt freshman passer it would be a sign of things to come as the talented LSU defense picked him off four times on the day.

LSU also turned the ball over three times in the game. Delmond Boudreaux and Troy McCollum picked off Hayden Rettig once each and Daniel Fritz forced a fumble that Early Reid recovered.

All of LSU's turnovers came in the first half while Louisiana turned it over three times in the second half, that would end up being the difference.

The Cajuns led halftime with LSU's drives ending in a trio of turnovers, a field goal and a punt. ULL put up three Jeffrey Yatkowksi field goals, from 42, 27 and 47 yards, before McAlary connected with D'Eriq Robinette for a 12 yard touchdown right before halftime. Porter Davis elected to go for two but McAlary's pass was batted down and the Ragin' Cajuns led 15-3 at the break.

The teams exchanged field goals on their first possessions of the second half before LSU's RB Warren Jones scored the Tigers' first touchdown on a bruising two yard run. Jones devastated Cajuns linebacker Jeremy Bailey on the run.

LSU deploys a “thunder and lightning” duo in their backfield consisting of the powerful Jones (6' 240) and speedy Jeryl Brazil (5'9” 188). LSU head coach Matt Limegrover went against the teams tendencies to score a touchdown after a fourth quarter McAlary interception, lining up with two tight ends and a fullback in front of Jones on a second and short, causing ULL to stack the box. Retting throwing a screen to Jones that resulted in a 21 yard touchdown was not on the Cajuns radar in the least in that situation.

“Not something they've put on tape with that personnel.” defensive coordinator Brian Knorr said of the play. “Good bit of play calling there.”

LSU added a two point conversion to make the score 21-18 LSU, their first lead of the game.

It was deja vu all over again as Retting once again connected with Jones for a passing touchdown following another McAlary interception. Jones scored from 26 yards out on am out route after motioning into the slot, another wrinkle LSU hadn't yet put on tape.

“We've got some history.” Limegrover said, referring to Louisiana head coach Porter Davis “We knew we would have to get creative with the personnel and the looks we showed to get those advantages on a couple plays.”

After taking over with under two minutes to play McAlary and the offense marched down the field and cut the lead to 28-25 on a five yard McAlary pass to Seth Palmero. LSU would recover the onside kick and score a few plays later on a 25 yard option keep by Rettig. LSU picked off McAlary for the fourth time on a pass that was tipped then ran out the clock.

McAlary finished with 419 yards on 37 of 56 passing with a pair of touchdowns and the four interceptions. Factoring in five sacks of McAlary the team ran for -19 yards on 19 carries, bringing their total offensive output to an even 400 yards.

LSU ran for 182 yards on 33 carries and Retting threw for 210.

“We've got to be a bit more balanced, we need to at least get some production when we do run the ball.” Porter Davis said following the loss. “Obviously we're going to throw it 40 or 50 times a game but when we do mix in the runs we need production.”

The loss is Davis' first loss in the regular season. The Cajuns will host Louisiana-Monroe next week.
