Los Angeles struggles in the tropical rainstorm as Tampa eek one through at home

Image

TAMPA, October 4 -- After riding high following their 38-8 victory over the Carolina Panthers, the LA Chargers were dealt a dosage of reality as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers handed them a 21-20 loss, following a botched extra point attempt late in the fourth which would have tied the game. With consistent downpour throughout the game, it turned into a dog fight within the trenches. Casey Hayward put Los Angeles ahead early with a 71 yard interception return before Tom Brady answered back with a 15-play, 76 yard drive. Brady, who threw for 163 yards, threw for 107 yards in the first quarter as Ronald Jones led the way for the rest of the game, which included a 96 yard touchdown in the second quarter as he gashed the Chargers’ defense for 242 total yards.

Los Angeles struggled on offense. Justin Herbert threw a costly bomb which was returned for a touchdown as time expired in the second quarter and nothing they tried to achieve on offense worked. The defense kept them in the game, with Joey Bosa coming up with 4 sacks, one which forced a fumble on third down. The football Gods were not in favour of LA, as that fumble crept across the first down marker with Tampa Bay recovering. The loss leaves the Los Angeles Chargers sitting at 2-2 with the first quarter of the season finished. They week they face the 1-3 New Orleans Saints on Monday night with Drew Brees looking to right New Orleans’ path before it’s another disappointing end to a season which had Super Bowl aspirations throughout the offseason.

Cleveland remain undefeated with statement win over Dallas

The Cleveland Browns blew out the Dallas Cowboys, 31-17, en-route to a 4-0 start to their 2020 season. Baker Mayfield was lethal on offense, finishing with a 110.1 quarterback rating while running backs Nick Chubb (21 carries, 80 yards, 1 touchdown) and Kareem Hunt (7 carries, 25 yards, 2 touchdowns) mowed over the Dallas Cowboys defense. It wasn't a good day for Dallas, who fall to 3-1 as they watch the New York Giants top the NFC East in one of the biggest surprises in football this season.

Giants start out of the gate, 4-0, thanks to an all-round team effort

The LA Rams aren't faring well this season. It truly looks like their journey to the top of the NFL was very short lived.

Week 4 rewind: Chargers fall to 2-2 after disappointing ending in Tampa
nfl.com/chargers/morningcoffee | October 5th, 2020

  • The Chargers special teams needs work: Michael Badgley may be knwon as the 'Money Badger', but that wasn't the case last week as his extra point miss was a contributing factor to the Chargers 21-20 loss to Tampa Bay. He's missed two extra point's this season. His first had no bearing on the outcome against the Bengals in the opener. This one? Well, if he contributes to more losses he may find himself on the free agency wire. Coming into the 2020 season, the third-year kicker had converted 28 of his 32 tries. His last second 60-yard field goal was his first miss of the season too. He needs to improve and get back to his previous form.
  • Ekeler reportedly unhappy in current scheme: Coming into the season, Ekeler inked a four-year $24.5 million contract extension with the Chargers. He hasn't lived up to that average of $6.1M per season. He hasn't had the opportunities to do so. The 25-year old running back is reportedly unhappy with his current playing time in Los Angeles after Melvin Gordon left town which gave him the free lane at starting at running back. This season, he's split time with Devonta Freeman and Jaylen Samuels. The Chargers are reportedly interested in chasing after Kareem Hunt or Le'Veon Bell for next season. Ekeler still has time to change their minds but his production hasn't warranted a #1 role in the Chargers offense.
  • Mike Williams wants to be the man: Mike Williams wants to take up the #1 role seriously, with the team announcing they won't rush Keenan Allen back into the roster. With Allen likely out for a couple of more games, Williams has the chance to turn heads in New Orleans on Monday night. Justin Herbert threw the most he has had to do all season against Tampa Bay, will that result in him airing it out in Louisiana or will they return to grinding out the run game. Williams believes he can be the guy that can kickstart the Chargers offense when it is needed.

LA not used to all that rain. Gonna have to abuse P.J. Williams in NOLA and air it out, a 1-3 Saints squad is going to put up a fight I imagine

Injuries
RB Alvin Kamara (season)

After starting the season 1-0, the New Orleans Saints have lost three consecutive to the Las Vegas Raiders, Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions. Two of their losses came by three points. In an alternative reality, they could be sitting pretty with a 3-1 record. They haven't played bad this season. Without star offensive weapon Alvin Kamara, Drew Brees has still completed a high percentage of his passes while Michael Thomas is still unguardable. He's on pace for another 100 reception season. Latavius Murray has filled in nicely, although with the scheme installed in New Orleans, he's played second fiddle to Drew Brees who airs it out in a receiving corps which boasts Thomas, Jared Cook, Emmanuel Sanders and Tre'Quan Smith. The Chargers have one of the best defenses in the NFL. They'll look to blitz and force a 40-year old quarterback into uncomfortable throws against arguably the best secondary in the NFL. Los Angeles will look to pound the rock against the Saints. Prime time game and on the road, they don't know how their rookie quarterback will react against such pressure. With a hybrid role of three backs, the Chargers have the means to run heavy - which they have done all season and successfully too, despite losing guard Trai Turner and wide receiver Keenan Allen to injury. It's a must win game for the New Orleans Saints, who will find themselves at 1-4 if the Los Angeles Chargers come out as victors. For the Bolts, a win would improve them to 3-2, which would be a pleasant surprise to the start of a new era in SoFi Stadium with Justin Herbert at quarterback.

Seems no standout so far. Each week a different back performs.

Failed two point conversion gives LA Chargers road win in Monday night thriller

Image

NEW ORLEANS, October 12 -- Holding his helmet high above his head with an irremovable grin, Justin Herbert jogged off the Superdome turf after securing his first primetime win. In a largely defensive game, which saw New Orleans mount a comeback and end in dramatic fashion, the Los Angeles Chargers defeated the New Orleans Saints, 24-22, in a Monday night thriller. Los Angeles opened up as 14-0 leaders before a safety and a touchdown drive engineered on the ensuing possessions saw the lead cut to just five points. A 12 yard touchdown run via a jet sweep by DaeSean Hamilton late in the third quarter looked to have sealed the victory before New Orleans scored two fourth quarter touchdowns, the latter on a 61 yard bomb to Michael Thomas, who was uncovered, which set up a two-point scenario to send the game to overtime or hand the Chargers the victory. The conversion failed and the Chargers escape New Orleans with two point victory. Of their four losses this season, three have come within three points for New Orleans. Talk about unfortunate score lines.

Justin Herbert did enough, game managing well as he completed 14 of his 23 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown while Austin Ekeler ran well between the tackles, tallying 81 yards and a touchdown off 18 carries while Hunter Henry was consistent over the middle, taking the big hits as he hurled in five catches for 52 yards. The story will come on defense. The Chargers sacked Drew Brees eight times. Jerry Tillery racked up four sacks, Linval Joseph recorded three and Joey Bosa got that all important fourth quarter sack. Despite the constant pressure, Drew Brees still found a way to move the chains, completing 31 of his 41 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns with Michael Thomas grabbing 9 of those passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. If there was a game the Saints badly missed Alvin Kamara, it may have been this one. Latavius Murray was held to just 22 yards off 6 carries while Ty Montgomery recorded 7 receptions out of the backfield for 42 yards. The play of the game surely came with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter when rookie Latavius Murray delivered a crushing hit on Michael Thomas, who fumbled the ball on the 16-yard line. The Chargers would drive down the field and score on DaeSean Hamilton’s jet sweep run. With the win, the LA Chargers improve to 3-2. With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-4 and with their season now looking in jeopardy just a quarter of the way through.
