Minnesota too much for San Jose State in blowout win
Minneapolis, Minnesota -
San Jose State went from elation to devastation in a matter of seconds. Deep in Minnesota territory they coughed up a fumble which the Gophers recovered at their own seven yard line. Cade Cannon ran for 70 yards on the next play. A few plays after that Cannon ran for a nine yard touchdown.

Mitch Leidner got his shot after a San Jose State punt. After competing a pass for 15 yards and a first down he lost a yard on bad keep on an option. After that he took two sacks, Minnesota punted and Leidner headed to the locker room with an undisclosed injury. He would not return.

From there it was all Gophers, led by Cannon who scored on a 70 yard run and threw a pair of TD passes before halftime, giving Minnesota a 28-0 lead.

Shortly after halftime Rodrick Williams Jr scored on a one yard TD run that was set up by Cannon's 33 yard rush a few plays earlier.

Early in the fourth quarter Ryan Santoso punched through a 37 yard field goal that was set up by a 35 yard Cannon pass to tight end Maxx Williams. Cannon yielded to Streveler after that.

Coleman would add a 64 yard TD run to make it 45-0. San Jose State avoided a shutout when Streveler fumbled the ball on a read option and Frieson scooped it up and took it 59 yards for a score.

Despite not having Donnell Kirkwood for the game Minnesota was still able to pile up over 500 yards rushing in the win.

“Outstanding work up front.” Cannon said when asked about his big game. “They made it pretty easy for us.”

Minnesota will face a much tougher opponent next week when they face off against #1 Ohio State.

Quarterback named Cannon who decides to be a running quarterback instead is the most ironic thing I have read in a while. :drose:

Gophers defense steps up, offense falters
Columbus, Ohio -
With Mitch Leidner (shoulder) and Donnell Kirkwood (broken collarbone) out for the game the Gophers would need to lean heavily on QB Cade Cannon, who Coach Jerry Kill announced would start and would probably play the whole game, and Rodrick Williams Jr to do the heavy lifting on offense. With gusty winds and heavy rains that would be a tall order.

Cannon was quickly introduced to the tough Ohio State defense when Adolphus Washington brought him down for a sack on the first Minnesota possession, forcing a punt. Ohio State's Braxton Miller put on a show on the Buckeye's first possession, completing all eight pass attempts including a short touchdown pass to tight end Nick Vannett. After the teams exchanged punts Cannon tied things up with an eight yard TD run. Miller responded by scoring a rushing TD of his own just before halftime, putting Ohio State up 14-7 at the break.

Shortly after halftime Cannon was hit hard by Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier. After being helped to the sideline Cannon did not return. Both offenses continued to struggle with Minnesota's backup QB Chris Streveler looking lost at times.

Ohio State held on to win 17-10.

"It wasn't a good game for our offense. Period." Jerry Kill said after the loss. "We've had some injuries but so have a hundred other teams. We just need to play better."

Cade Cannon's injury will be evaluated and we will report when we have information. Mitch Leidner is expected to be cleared to play next week against Indiana.

Scoring
1Q OSU Vannett 2 Yd pass from Miller (Whitaker kick)
2Q MIN Cannon 8 Yd run (Santoso kick)
2Q OSU Miller 3 Yd run (Whitaker kick)
3Q MIN Santoso 43 Yd FG
4Q OSU Whitaker 20 Yd FG

Key Stats

Streveler - 3/7 15Yds
Williams Jr - 11Car 44Yds
Coleman - 5Car 7Yds

Cade Cannon expected to start against Michigan
Medical staff have cleared Cannon

REJOICE! Cade Cannon has been cleared by the medical staff and is expected to start against Michigan on Saturday.

Cannon suffered a concussion after a brutal but clean hit by Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier just after halftime of the game on September 20th, exactly a month ago.

Since then the offense has been absolutely terrible, scoring 17 points in the last three games, all losses.

Donnell Kirkwood has also been cleared to play and Kill says he will probably get the nod against Michigan as well. Rodrick Williams Jr has played well while Kirkwood has been out, giving the team another weapon in the running game.

For Minnesota, at 2-5 overall with a 0-4 record in the Big Ten, it's do or die for the Gophers.

The rest of the schedule looks like this:
10/25 vs Michigan 2-4(1-2)
11/8 @ Illinois 2-5(0-4)
11/15 @ #11 Iowa 5-1(2-1)
11/22 @ #13 Nebraska 4-2(2-1)
11/29 vs Purdue 2-4(1-3)

Not easy and a tough road to a bowl game. Anything to do with a bid in the conference championship is a pipe dream at this point with Northwestern at 3-1 with a win over us already.

Let's hope Cannon can get the offense rolling and stay healthy the rest of the way.
