Glamorgan To Give Young Batsman A Chance

It's time for the start of the LV County Cricket Championship again and there is change in the air in Cardiff as they are set to rotate one of their academy players into the starting line-up. Rob Jones is a young man, born in Cardiff's St David's Hospital only down the road from Glamorgan's Sofia Gardens, who was one of the first members of the Glamorgan Development Program. The program was designed to take cricketers from local schools in the South Wales area at around 13 years old and within 4 to 7 years develop them into players who can challenge for the starting XIs at club level, or even to go on and star for their country. Jones first joined the program as a 14 year old coming from Cathedral School in Cardiff and now 7 years later he is ready to be called up to the first XI.

Jones has spent the last 3 years batting with the second XI and he has found success as a steady opening batsman and a prolific scorer of runs when needed. The coaching staff at Glamorgan have said that his driving front foot shot is already one of the best at the club, and it is as an opening batsman that he will join the first XI. Whilst Jones did bowl in school, he lacks the pace on the ball to be anything other than a relief bowler for an over or two at the higher levels. Before the Glamorgan Development Program Jones played for Cathedral School and the Penarth Cricket Club. He continued to represent his school while playing for the program but stopped when he turned 16, choosing to focus exclusively on the program and the opportunities there. If Jones can succeed at county level then it will have proved the program itself has merit and may see similar programs implemented across the first class county clubs.

Jones will likely bat 2nd for Glamorgan, and will be relied upon to gain runs at a steady pace without risking his wicket too much. At the second XI level he had a habit of trying risky shots when he was establishing his rhythm, and while this makes for an exciting time on the crease to watch it can be frustrating for the coaching staff and captain to see Jones get into trouble early into his innings. Jones has also tended to struggle against the spin throughout his time in the second XI and his problems batting against the spin having given him the nickname of Dizzy after he fell over trying to hit a wrist spin shot as a 16 year old. The coaching staff will hope that playing in the first XI will help to solve Jones' problems with the spin and if not at least give him a batting partner who will be able to deal with the majority of spin bowlers for him at the start.

The Basics
I know that cricket isn't a hugely popular sport in the US so I thought I would include a video here just talking over the basics of the rules and how to play. I will also include a diagram of the field underneath which gives some of the technical terms you might see in my reports.

Long stop, Gully, Mid On, Mid Off, Cover, Point, Square Leg, Mid-Wicket, Slip, Long Off, Long On, Third Man and Fine Leg are the names of places where a fielder can stand (like a shortstop, right fielder etc in baseball). They are also the names of the places you can hit the ball to, for example you can hit the ball to square leg, which means hitting it across your body to the left (if you are right handed). There are a few other positions but these are the basic ones.

On and off side refer to what direction the ball is coming into the stumps and for a right handed batsman the on side or leg side is to the left and the off side is to the right. Usually, most fielders are placed on the off side. This is because most bowlers tend to concentrate the line of their deliveries on or outside the off stump, so most shots are hit into the off side.

The Umpire and Square Leg Umpire are the places that the referees stand.

Finally the bowler and the wicket keeper are fixed positions, the bowlers alternate what end they bowl from but they will always come down to the top of the crease to bowl and the wicket keeper will always be behind the stumps trying to catch. Think of them as pitcher and catcher in baseball.

Hope that helps!

1st Inning Review

Jones, Bowled Out for 8 (8): It was a rough start for Dizzy Jones as faced off against a Worcestershire side that had just put the Glamorgan bowlers to the sword for a huge number of runs. There was a lot of pressure on the youngster to put up runs early but he had to face off against his worst enemy, an early spin bowler. Jones survived the first over against Brett D'Olivera and then managed some nice runs against Nick Harrison, including a clip off side drive to point to score his first ever senior boundary. However his batting partner Will Bragg was not able to stop him having to face D'Olivera again and with the last ball of the over Jones played a defensive shot that just clipped the outside of the bat instead of hitting flush and pushed onto the stumps behind him. A poor start but showing some promise against pace.

Jones pushed a drive to point to score his first ever senior boundary on his way to only 8 runs.

Unfortunately Jones pushed the ball with the outside edge of the bat onto the stumps to get out.

Overall (Batting): Not the best performance from Glamorgan, saved somewhat by Wallace's superb 125 from 186 balls. While the team did get good production from Bragg, Wallace and Ingram there was simply too many players going for low scores. Jones' score is understandable given his age but Cooke and Kettleborough are both experienced batsmen who should be putting up a lot more than low teens against a bowling attack that was open for runs. Significant credit has to be given to the back order as Wagg picked up the slack, adding 32 hugely important runs and preventing a quick end to the innings. Hogan was looking steady on 7 but he wasn't able to find a reliable partner as Cosker and Bull both left for single digits.

Overall (Bowling): Simply unacceptable and that's all there is to it. Letting Pardoe get to 136 is fine, especially since he took 240 balls to do it, and it is understandable shipping 53 runs to Ali and 31 to Fell as both of them are accomplished batsmen. However the performance against the bottom 5 was appalling and it ruined the economy with Cosker and Wagg almost hitting 4 runs per over, which would be worrying even at one day level. Bull deserves credit for holding his economy to under 3 but he was let down by his teammates who allowed the Worcestershire bowlers to put up 172 runs between them. Chowdrey's 65 not out from only 100 balls with Andrew's 40 off 43 was the worst of the lot. Thankfully they were pulled out of the muck by some of their batsmen but they will have to perform significantly better in the 2nd innings if they are wanting to end this game with any sort of result.

2nd Inning Review

Jones, Bowled LBW for 0 (3): The bad start got even worse as the nerves clearly got to the debutant. Facing Chowdery at the bottom of the first over, Jones hit a couple of defensive shots before simply misjudging the bounce and being caught leg before wicket for the out. With Glamorgan facing a winnable chase it was terrible luck but the rest of the form of the team's batting showed that maybe it wasn't an anomaly. The wicket was clearly favouring spin and Chowdery and D'Olivera both caught out their fair share of batsmen. All Jones can do is wait for next week, and hope the team he faces is focused more on pace than spin.

Image
Jones simply misjudged the bounce and was caught clearly LBW. Hawk-eye confirmed the decision although Glamorgan didn't appeal.

Overall (Batting): If the first innings was poor then this was shambolic. The Glamorgan batsmen simply could not work out the wicket and only 2 batsmen in the entire order managed to score over 20 runs, with the partnership of Ingram and Kettleborough being the only bright light in the whole innings. Wallace followed up his century by edging to the keeper almost immediately. Bragg was barely able to cope with the loss of Jones and Wallace and folded soon after. While the wicket was causing a lot of bounce and movement from the ball, losing the top 4
batsmen in only 52 balls is tragic. Dizzy Jones isn't the only batsman who will need to work at improving his play against the spin in the week coming up.

Image

Overall (Bowling): The bowlers showed a massive improvement on the 1st innings with Wagg in particular taking huge wickets throughout the Worcestershire order. Bull also proved to be a sound player, causing a lot of problems with his delivery. Glamorgan did the right thing by limiting Cosker after his lackluster performance in the 1st innings but he would have been preferable to Meschede or Hogan who were the only blips on this innings. Overall the bowlers did a great job in limiting the amount of runs from Worcestershire, especially with quick wickets of Ali and Fell. They set up Glamorgan with a realistic chase for the win and a definite chance at the draw, it's a shame the batsmen let the side down.

I fucking hate spin. I hope I get some pace guys in the next game, I'm just going to go super defensive against spin for a while I think, you make one mistake against them and you are out.

It's a heavy ass whopping. Our bowling was bad in the 1st innings and our batting was awful in the 2nd. Lots of room for improvement.
