Former Bulls target T Kenneth Smith commits to Texas as Bulls must reshape OL recruiting
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Four-star offensive tackle Kenneth Smith out of Galena Park, Texas isn't leaving The Lone Star State, committing to the University of Texas over USF and Oklahoma.

The Bulls had fallen behind Big 12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma in his recruitment so the announcement wasn't a surprise. Neither was four-star center Kyle Moss releasing a top two of SMU and Navy and four-star guard Elton Hopkins releasing a top three of Navy, Georgia Tech and Michigan. Both players were at one point USF targets in what at point had the potential to be a very good recruiting class along the offensive line.

USF does already have five-star offensive tackle Michael Bowser in the boat and are trying to close the deal on five-star center Daniel Moore who will be on campus this weekend as will three-star local prospect James Jones. It remains to be seen if the Bulls are okay with those three being their class up front or if they'll go back to the drawing board and rebuild their recruiting board on the offensive line. They did extend an offer to three-star offensive guard James Thompson out of Pennsylvania.

What was a surprise was five-star defensive end Jon Hamby, who USF had been trying to commit to coming on campus this weekend, released a top two of Notre Dame and Texas, announcing that he'll be visiting those two schools in December as his only official visits. The news certainly caught the folks in Tampa by surprise and again, resets their board at the position. Hamby had been the main target at defensive end.

While not great news heading into a big recruiting weekend where the Bulls will host No. 5 Notre Dame as the top ranked team in the country, all hopes isn't lost for the Bulls. Five-star running back Anthony Montgomery will be on campus this weekend along with five-star receiver Travis Lewis, four-star linebacker Bill Pace and the aforementioned Moore and Jones.

Not to end on a negative note but Montgomery's teammate and fellow Bulls target five-star TE Derrick Hunter will on an official visit to Miami this weekend.

Bulls Hang On To Survive a Tight Battle vs. Notre Dame to Remain Unbeaten
Skip Holtz' decision to kick the ball deep instead of going for the onside kick with two minutes left in the game, down three points will forever be questioned.

Especially as the South Florida Bulls were able to run out the clock with ease, beating Notre Dame 30-27 to hang on to their unbeaten record.

USF's missed kick just four minutes before opened the door for Notre Dame to still have a chance. They converted a fourth down and two third downs on the drive as Trey Sullivan was once again able to get behind USF All-SEC cornerback Pierre Francois for his second touchdown of the game.

Sullivan finished the game with four catches for 136 yards and the two scores but it wasn't enough. Lionel Jude had gotten off to a hot start but finished the game with just 68 yards on the ground as the Bulls defense hunkered down and started owning the line of scrimmage, leaving the bulk of the offense on Adam Malone's shoulder.

Malone was sacked for a safety in the third quarter in what was one of the turning points of the game as it allowed the Bulls to score nine unanswered points and negate the effect of Sullivan's long touchdown pass before the end of the half. It didn't help that all-world tight end Darrell Jones left the game in the second quarter with a concussion.

Adams commits to Navy but Bulls land foursome during OV, including five-star RB Montgomery
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Five-star running back Anthony Montgomery, five-star wide receiver Travis Lewis, four-star linebacker Bill Pace and three-star offensive tackle James Jones have all committed to the University of South Florida.

Their commitments gave USF 11 commits, nearly doubling their total from the start of the month and have them atop the recruiting rankings with four five-stars committed in the class, just one shy of last year's school record of five.

In Montgomery, the Bulls offset the loss of four-star running back Sean Adams committing to Navy. From a talent evaluation standpoint, the gap in rankings aren't aligned with the gap in talent as the two players are two different style of running backs but nearly equally as talented.

The younger brother of USF receiver Corey Montgomery, Montgomery is a bruiser at running back and plays a lot bigger than his size although he also has prototypical size at six-foot-one and 207 pounds. The only concern is that in Montgomery, the Bulls might be getting a carbon copy of him in David Daniel as well as E.J. Thomas if he ends up at USF as all three are bigger backs that lack true home-run ability.

This is also the case at receiver where the Bulls beat out Arkansas and Arizona for Lewis. While it can debated if Lewis is deserving of his high ranking and fifth star, what isn't up for debate is that the Bulls don't really go after these types of receivers and what's even more rare is for them to have success. Lewis' verified 40-time of 4.54 is the slowest amongst all qualifying receivers that the Bulls have signed under head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. Brandon Burns is the only other comp and he struggled at both defensive back and receiver before he eventually transferred.

What is there to like about Lewis? He's a well rounded receiver who, despite his lack of elite physical traits, have scored 21 touchdowns in the last 18 games. He produces and he joins a talented and loaded receivers room where he'll be allowed to grow and not forced on the field early.

This should also be the case for Pace and Jones who are more developmental projects than likely day-one contributors. The Rhoden comparisons are easy to make for Pace with both being from South Carolina and having similar physical profiles although Pace is a bit longer and Rhoden is slightly more athletic. Pace might never be an every down player against today's spread offenses but he should be able to develop into a niche role as an inside linebacker on short yardage situations.

Jones has the physical traits at 6'7" and 303 pounds to be a starting caliber offensive tackle but he has ways to go from his conditioning to his footwork and overall technique. Ideally, three seasons from now, Michael Bowser is your left tackle and Jones at right tackle. While it can be argued that some of the Bulls commit are too high on the rankings, it can equally be argued that Jones is too low.

What's next for USF on the trail? They could be closing shop soon as the class figured to be a smaller one with maybe fourteen signings. They're already at eleven and will likely hold a spot open for five-star tight end Derrick Hunter, five-star center Daniel Moore, four-star linebacker Mark Johnson and four-star defensive tackle Dwayne Callahan.

They're kicking the tires on JUCO prospect Brad Williams who is a quarterback at ASA College down in Hialeah, Florida but the team likes as a running back/receiver hybrid. He's a dynamic athlete and a name to watch down the stretch as the Bulls might have to make some tough decisions on who they take and who they don't.

Bye Week Report: USF QB Jay Jackson will wear number one jersey for rest of the season
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

When USF's social media account did not put out a hype video to announce who would wear the No. 1 jersey this season back during the spring and summer, many wondered if this was an indication of a lack of talent and leadership overall on the team after losing so many contributors from the 2026 national championship squad.

USF fans can relax now.

In the hype video released on Wednesday during the team's bye week, redshirt senior quarterback Jay Jackson the wear number one jersey. Jackson has earned Heisman buzz after being second in the nation with 1763 yards through the air and 21 total touchdowns.

Biggest takeaways from first half of the season
  • USF's defense is really good, like really good
After losing six starters on the defense, many experts predicted USF's defense to take a step back. Not only has that not happened, the Bulls are even better in 2028 as Justin Wilcox continues to make his case for a P5 head coaching job.

The team's 3-4 front has been the base, even against spread offenses and it's working. While Marcus Rhoden and Kenny Frye aren't the most flee of foot linebackers and are prone to being beat to the edge, outside linebackers Greg White and B.J. Patton have taken over games at time. Patton has 13 tackles for loss while White has eight, tied for second on the team with Frye and safety Paul Williams.
    -
  • WR Harper starting to put two and two together
Physically, wide receiver James Harper should be one of the best receivers in the country at six-foot-five with legit sub 4.3 speed.

While he's far from that even now, he's turned out to be an effective number two receiver in this offense and the team's best outside receiver. He's got good chemistry with Jay Jackson on the deep ball who is more willing to throw jump balls to Harper than Jed White was, even if it has resulted in three interceptions thus far on the year.

It's a risk that Jackson and OC Calvin Magee seem to be willing to take and for good reason. While Corey Montgomery and Jean-Jacques Francois are uber effective across the middle, the Bulls need someone capable of taking the top off a defense and softening coverages up which Harper can and has done this season.
    -
  • USF's offensive line has been dominant
While right tackle Chris Simpson has certainly shown that he's more of a guard than a tackle when it comes to passing sets, USF's offensive line has been elite this season with the unit allowing a sack on just three percent of dropbacks, down from six percent last season.

Right guard Andrew Smart has been a great addition to the starting five and gives him some nastiness as he finishes blocks as does left guard Robbie Wade. Sophomore and first-year starter center Nick Matthews can get overwhelmed and overpowered at times but overall, as a unit, this is one of the best in the SEC and maybe the country.

What to watch for in second half of the season
  • Jackson's Heisman campaign will require the use of his legs
Jed White carried the ball 201 times last season and while Jay Jackson's frame does not lend to a similar workload, the Bulls can certainly use him as a runner more than they currently are.

He's still averaging 47.7 yards per game and with Pookie Harrell potentially sidelined for the next few games with the elbow injury he suffered against Notre Dame, Jackson becomes the team's de facto second best option on the ground. This should bode well for his Heisman chances as Heisman favorite and Florida quarterback Anthony Reid is a dual threat.
    -
  • Who grabs onto WR3 spot and heads into next season as the team's second best receiver?
Andrew Rivas, Derrick Byrd and Pat Newsome all have eleven catches on the season for 142, 124 and 152 yards respectively.

Rivas did most of his damage in one game where he had three touchdowns while for Byrd and Newsome, it's been a more 'here and there' output of production. We know Harper is WR2 this season and Montgomery is WR1 but with Harper being a redshirt senior season, the floor is wide open for someone to take that spot for next year.

Newsome is going to be an interesting one to watch as he's the most fluid runner out of all of them and has shown flashes of physicality, body control and reliable hands that you want in an outside receiver.
    -
  • Will LB Booth be able to stay on the field?
Sophomore linebacker Greg Booth's athleticism is off the charts. His run fits and overall toughness against the run? Not so much.

Booth got on the field and stayed on the field last season as part of the team's nickel and dime package which quickly became its base defense. He was able to 'hide' behind nose tackle William Levine and defensive end Kyle Swain, who kept offensive linemen off him. While the Bulls defensive line has been good, they aren't the space eaters that last year's unit was and when they fail to make the play behind the LOS, it allows for the offensive line to get to the second unit and puts pressure on the Bulls linebacker to evade blocks and make plays.

Kenny Frye and to some extent Marcus Rhoden have been able to do that, Booth has not. This has resulted in his playing time dwindling, even on third downs as the team is choosing to keep it's 3-4 base defense out there a lot more than they did last season.

Bulls tie school record with fifth five-star commitment as Georgia's Daniel Moore commits
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Five-star center Daniel Moore has committed to the USF Bulls over in-state Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Auburn.

Once considered a Georgia Tech lock, the Bulls were able to claw their way through the muck of other SEC teams and land the services of the top ranked center in the nation, giving them their fifth five-star of the class with potentially more on the way.

There's a lot to like about Moore who is the Bulls fourth highest ranked commit so far. He's got good size for a center, capable of playing all three interior spots along the offensive line although his lack of athleticism will likely him at center given that the Bulls love pulling their guards. His conditioning needs work and Moore knows that as his film shows signs of fading down the stretch of games.

With his commitment, the Bulls have what many consider the best offensive tackle in the class in Michael Bowser -- albeit being listed as an athlete -- and the top center. It also marks the first time the school has signed two five-star offensive linemen.

USF has a stronger hold now on the nation's top ranked recruiting class and might be able to be picky down the stretch with limited spots available. Could they potentially say no to five-star running back E.J. Thomas who has already said that he plans to drag his commitment to National Signing Day? Possibly. What about guard James Thompson, one of the team's lowest ranked targets?

We know they'll take tight end Derrick Hunter, outside linebacker Mark Johnson and defensive tackle Dwayne Callahan as there are roster management needs at those positions. This brings the class total to 15 with maybe just one or two open spots left.

Bulls Travel To Auburn, Finish Off Tigers To Improve to 7-0
For two and a half quarters, everything was going right for the Auburn Tigers. It looked like fifth-year senior quarterback Eric Dunn would never need to pick up a tab in Auburn, Alabama and might not be allowed in Ybor City ever again.

But then the top ranked South Florida Bulls showed why they are No. 1 team in the nation, scoring 24 unanswered points to beat the Tigers 34-24 in Jordan-Hare on Saturday afternoon.

Williams touchdown with 5:36 left in the third quarter gave Auburn a commanding fourteen point lead. However, Jay Jackson hooked up on 2nd and 16 with his favorite target, Corey Montgomery, for a 48-yard gain. Two plays later, he'd find a wide open James Harper in the endzone to cut the lead in half in just a little over a minute.

After a 17-yard gain to kick start the ensuing drive, Auburn picked the wrong time for their offense to run out of gas, losing yards on back to back plays before a third down incompletion gave USF the ball back.

Following a long run of their own, Jackson ran the play action to perfect, finding Montgomery on a post route from the slot for a 27-yard touchdown that shut down Jordan-Hare.

Both teams swapped punts to open the fourth quarter but Dunn made his biggest mistake of the night, targeting edge rusher B.J. Patton who was 23-yards down the field covering tight end Lee Steele going across the field. Dunn was late and underthrew his target, allowing Patton to make a highlight reel toe-tap interception.

Two plays later, Jackson found Montgomery on a fake screen as Montgomery mimicked going for a block before turning up field and leaving his defender in the dust. He dove into the endzone for good measure and that was all she wrote for any momentum the Tigers had gained throughout the game.
