SEC rules USF eligible for championship while appeals process plays out
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

While it was tucked away in a weekend news dump, the SEC's decision on Friday could be the catalyst for a paradigm shift. The Southeastern Conference announced that the University of South Florida's football program will be eligible to win the SEC East and play in the SEC Championship game this season.

The NCAA handed down its punishment on USF a few weeks ago, which included scholarship reductions and a three-year postseason ban, which in the past has included conference championships. USF quickly announced that they would be appealing those sanctions, including the postseason ban.

While one can assume that the SEC's decision to allow USF to be bowl eligible this season is due to the fact that the appeals process is still underway, the SEC did not mention it during their announcement. The omission could simply be an omission or one with a purpose, with the latter having potentially long-lasting impact. By allowing USF to play in the SEC Championship Game, the SEC could be making a bold statement that the NCAA rules don't apply to them and by definition, they don't.

The SEC is an independent conference outside of the NCAA. The SEC could still live outside of the NCAA, a notion that many college football analyst and sports business experts have pondered about for decades. If all of the Power Five conferences wanted to band together and form a new 'super league' outside of the NCAA, it would be well within their rights. It's important to note that the College Football Playoff is also independent of the NCAA and instead a property of ESPN and by extension Disney. Where does the SEC now exclusively reside? ESPN/Disney.

For Bulls fans, the decision simply means that this season might not be a waste and there's still a chance at a repeat. For college football fans around the world and particularly those that hate the NCAA -- the two might be mutually inclusive -- it could be the end of the NCAA as we know it.

Other notes from my notebook for the week:
  • Rocky second year for Malcolm Francois Jr., Kentucky
A lot of people that know about football spoke very highly of former USF receiver and offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr. and thought that he was one of the brightest offensive minds in college football and an elite recruiter. Francois Jr. showed that during his time at USF as receivers coach and eventually offensive coordinator for a record breaking offense where he recruited a ton of talent to USF.

Through 21 games, he's 11-10 with ten of those wins coming last season with a revamped roster that included a ton of transfers, several of which were from USF. Kentucky also doesn't have a single commit this cycle and aren't in the running for many of the top recruits in the state.

Francois Jr's seat isn't hot yet but in the tough SEC, it's a hard place to rebuild and turn things around quickly.
    -
  • Junior CB Joe Jackson practicing with team but not game ready
USF junior cornerback Joe Jackson could be one of the top corners taken in next spring's draft, a fact that doesn't escape USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr's mind when making a decision on Jackson's availability.

Francois Sr. spoke to the media on Wednesday during the team's bye week and said that while two bye weeks in a month have helped Jackson's recovery, he doesn't expect Jackson to be on the field until he's fully ready.

"He's one of the best corners in the country, probably the best. When he's ready to be that again, he'll be on the field. No need to put bad tape out there, we've got guys that can play at a high level," said Francois Sr.

Even with just four scholarship corners on the roster and now down to just three healthy ones, USF's defense has continued to impress, particularly with the emergence of freshman nickel corner Kenny Fowler.

In two starts, Fowler has seventeen tackles and two interceptions on the season.
    -
  • Nussmeier sees big time potential in freshman McCarthy
Lost in the hype of the freshman receivers and five-star quarterback Joey Spence is former four-star receiver turned running back Dionte McCarthy.

In limited touches, McCarthy is averaging 9.1 yards per carry and 45.6 yards per game, taking four of his thirty five carries for touchdown. He also has five rushes of more than 20 yards. McCarthy's caught the attention of USF offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier.

"He's not just a gadget player," said the veteran offensive coordinator of McCarthy's 84-yard performance against Auburn on just six carries, "He's becoming a total running back, a three-down type of guy you see at the next level."

A linear runner, if McCarthy can add some more wiggle to his game this off-season and get stronger on contact, the two-headed backfield of McCarthy and a healthy Bobby Jackson next season will be a dangerous one.

Bulls lose in gut-wrenching fashion to Stanford and their tough defense
In their biggest game of the season, Stanford's defense was non-existence, allowing Oregon to go back and forth with Stanford's offense to the tune of 509 total yards with the Ducks converting seventy percent of their third downs and turning all six of their red zone trips into seven points.

Just a week removed from that performance, the Cardinal defense showed up, shutting down USF's high potent passing attack for an entire half and was able to hold them off in the fourth quarter as Stanford and Ira Mayo beat the Bulls 31-28 on Saturday afternoon to put themselves back in the CFP picture.

Mayo's 72-yard run in the first quarter gave Stanford a 14-0 lead, which they would never relinquish. USF's offense initially had no problem going up and down the field but failed to punch it in with an interception at the goal-line, a failed fourth down conversion from inside the 13-yard line and a missed field goal from within 25-yards.

All while Mayo and Stanford's offense kept pounding out USF's defense to the tune of 291 rushing yards, Mayo accounted for 212 of those.

USF's offense seemed to be completely stalled following injuries to receiver Andrew Young, Jason McDowell, Marques Iosefo and Sam Washington left them with bare bones on offense. Nevertheless, Jeff Jones started to get it going in the third quarter with back to back drives that ended with touchdowns to Chris Wallace to cut Stanford's lead to fourteen points.

The Bulls would get within a possession following Jarod Green's touchdown with 3:05 left in the game but Stanford's running attack was then able to put the game away along with quarterback Johnnie Whitworth who completed just eleven passes but his eleventh one came on third and eight where he was able to find a streaking receiver across the field and complete the pass despite three defenders around him.

Stanford kicked in a field goal to extend their lead with eleven seconds prior to USF getting a garbage time touchdown, another one for Green.
