Alan Pitts, Rutgers grounded in 55-7 blowout loss to South Florida Bulls
A loss to unranked Maryland in the regular season finale cost then defending national champions Rutgers from a spot in the College Football Playoffs. Instead, it was the South Florida Bulls that would run the table to add another national championship to their trophy.

With both teams beginning their season with a win, the backdrop was set for a highly anticipated matchup between former Heisman finalist Alan Pitts and the high octane Rutgers offense squaring up against USF's consistently tough defense. Instead, it was a bloodbath as the Bulls clubbed the Scarlet Knights 55-7 on Saturday.

True freshman running back Chris Todd left the game early with an injury, forcing Rutgers to place senior tight end Tim Scott at running back. While Scott would score the game's lone touchdown for Rutgers late in the fourth quarter, it allowed USF's defense to isolate on Pitts even more who couldn't escape Kyle Locher. Pitts completed 20 of 31 passes for 228 yards and was held to just three yards per carry, totaling 43 yards on 14 carries.

Locher finished the game with eight tackles, a pick six and a forced fumble that was recovered by true freshman Clarence Sullivan.

Offensively for USF, it was a game of pitch and catch when Mark Cunningham had time in the pocket, throwing for 263 yards and three touchdowns, two to true freshman Scott Price. Rutgers didn't have any answer for the running game either with three Bulls averaging over five yards per carry with Jacob Wheeler leading the way with 74 yards, Kellen Wright adding 49 and backup quarterback Rashard Woodard rushing for 47 yards.
